I'm releasing the hounds. Find out what you can on this cat; this was taken today from the Miami Herald, by the way:
Art Alvarez -- point guard Denis Clemente's AAU coach -- said Clemente (off UM's team since March) likely will transfer from UM to Kansas State, coached by former Miami High coach Frank Martin.

Nice.

I suppose no pot was part of team rules. Though I was hoping he was kicked off for something like bringing a handgun to practice, it will do. :ksu:

Wow, he pretty much improved everything by a lot. I wonder if he'll go juco for a year, or what.
JuCo would be unlikely since he's already going to be a junior. That would use another year of his eligibility anyway.
If he comes in and sits a year we'll have him as a junior when Blake and Clent head out. Correct?
Anyway I like a lot. Even better than a JuCo kid. He'll have 2 years D-1 experience, a year off to learn our schemes, and then 2 years left to play.
-
i don't think the rumor is that he is picked up. just considering ksu.
i can take him or leave him personally. i don't see a lot to get excited about, but the 2008 class is thin on points and ksu will have a fair number of ships to fill. so, it is hard to complain.
-
Apparently, Denis is the 3rd cousin of the late great
Roberto Clemente and was raised in Puerto Rico....
Doesn't speak English well, but good enough to get by.
And even though his name is Denis....it's pronounced "Denny".
-
we'll take him
-
He can't go juco he's already played two years jc kids have to be freshman or soph's. I'll take him because he's a proven point and because he'll sit out a year and be a junior after next season Colon is the only other kid in that class it's good to have your ships spread around your classes instead of all clustered up.

Not much new but from the Palm Beach Post's UM blog:
Haith cracks the whip at UM
By Jorge Milian | Wednesday, March 28, 2007, 02:49 PM
Randy Shannon has received a lot of attention lately for installing a tough code of conduct for Miami’s football players.
But UM basketball coach Frank Haith may be the real disciplinarian on the Hurricanes’ athletic staff.
That much was proven this week when Haith booted his starting point guard, Denis Clemente, off the team.
Clemente, a sophomore who started 15 games, was suspended twice this season. He was banned for the Hurricanes’ season opener and then sat out UM’s final four games, including the ACC tournament.
Despite having only one strike left, Clemente apparently managed to screw up again.
Haith said he was left with “no choice” but to give Clemente the boot.
“Some people aren’t happy that I did what I did,” Haith told me earlier this week. “But I want to be able to sleep at night knowing that I’m doing the right thing for this team and the players on this team.”
Haith won’t say what caused Clemente to be dismissed, although one athletic department insider said the Puerto Rican native was unable to keep himself “on the straight and narrow” and had “bad off-the-court habits.”
Whatever the situation was, dismissing Clemente couldn’t have been an easy thing for Haith.
For one, Clemente is a pleasant young man who was well-liked by his coaches and teammates.
Clemente also figured to be one of the key components for next year’s team. In the second half of the 2006-07 season, Clemente played very well and appeared to be on the verge of matching the considerable expectations held for him when he signed with Miami.
With Clemente gone, the Hurricanes are left without a legitimate point guard. Jack McClinton may be used in that role next season, although he seemed like less than a natural when given a shot at the position late in the year.
Highly-touted incoming freshman Edwin Rios may also get an opportunity to play the point, but freshmen point guards don’t have a long history of success in the ACC.
With his team coming off a 12-20 season and few options at point guard, it might have been easy for Haith to look past Clemente’s repeated transgressions and give him another shot.
Instead, Haith lowered the boom. Haith may not have Shannon’s reputation as a disciplinarian, but the facts speak for themselves.
Getting a few other things off my chest:
...
….Gotta wonder when UM’s basketball team is going to cut ties with local club coach Art Alvarez. Alvarez has produced three players for the Hurricanes — Guillermo Diaz, Clemente and Colombian Freddy Asprilla, who signed a letter-of-intent to play for UM next season. Truth be told, few shed tears when Diaz skipped his senior year to enter the NBA draft last year. Clemente has been banished and we hear that Asprilla likely won’t qualify to enter UM.

It is looking like that last schollie has been filled!
-
I'm unclear with how long he would need to sit out? How long does a player sit when they get kicked off? Does he have to take one year off? And does he get that year of elligibility back? How long did Giddens have to take off when he got the boot?

He'd have to sit out a year because of the transfer, and would have 2 years of eligibility left.
-
Good find Jeff.
I'd welcome him with open arms.
-
Anyone else wondering if their's a loophole that would allow him to play next year?

there's no loophole

You still have to transfer from school to school even if you're no longer part of the basketball program.
http://www.ncaa.org/library/general/transfer_guide/2006-07/2006-07_transfer_guide.pdf
The first question you want to ask is, “Am I a transfer?” It seems fairly simple, but you need to answer this basic question before you can move forward.
So, how do you figure out if you’re considered a transfer? First, we would ask several questions about the most common conditions involved in transferring from one school to another. We call these conditions transfer triggers. The triggers are important because they tell you if you’ll need to know the transfer rules.
Ask yourself these questions:
■ Have you ever been enrolled full time at a two- or four-year school in a regular academic term? (Summer does not count.)
■ Have you ever reported for practice with the regular squad?
■ Have you ever practiced or played while you were enrolled part time?
If you answered Yes to any of these questions, you are a transfer. That means you now need to learn the transfer rules if you still want to play your sport at your new NCAA school.

I true point guard....

Does anyone know if the kid stayed in school and finished out the semester? If not, he won't be academically eligible to transfer anywhere without a boat load of summer school, and that will all have to be on his own dime.

I would imagine that Miami encouraged him to continue his studies after he was booted for the very same reason that we are encouraging Bennett to continue his classes, and that’s because no program wants a kid to leave in bad standings and zing their academic graduation/advancement ratings.

...and unlike Bennett, he does not have the option of going JUCO because he has already exhausted 2 years of eligibility.
-
But Bennett didn't do well or he would have been released. Also I want to know if J.R. Giddens sat out a year before going to NM. I kind of thought because he was booted (I think) that he didn't have to sit a year, because it was less his choice than the schools. I could be way off base here. I just don't remember him sitting a year.

You have to sit out at least a year when transferring from D1 to D1.

Well there is a difference. A plain ole' transfer and you sit a year and lose a year of eligibility. But if you are released you get that year back after sitting your year. It would be sweet to get this guy next year, a top 150 from 2005 with 2 years of development, but I'm kind of glad he has to sit so we get him comming in after Stewart graduates. I hope everything pans out.
