I expected to hate the place when I walked in, but I changed my tune when I walked out with a new couch, recliner/ottoman, coffee table, end table, and headboard for ~$1,200. My KC apartment actually has "stuff" in it now.
Now I feel really old getting excited about furniture. :-[

Check the one in Omaha. Even Better.

That's what my bro-in-law said too, but he's from Omaha, so I chalked it up to hometown bias. But all that crap for $1200 is a pretty nice deal, huh?

here's what ive bought from NFM...
stove, refridg combo,
imac
dig camera.
LOVE It.
15 miles away.

never been to the place but i refuse to shop in KCK so thats why.

If you're ever in omaha, check out the original at 42nd Street. They also have a "discount" building called Mrs. B's. Everything in there is scratched, returned, or discontinued. Unbelievable deals. Especially on carpet remnants. I don't know if I would go as far as saying it is "better" than KC though. Just the Mrs.B's building.

Does that stand for "Mrs. Buffett"?

No, that place blows.
Pretty sure you bought cheap crap for your crappy Joco apartment.
So, I guess it's kind of fitting.
-
You actually paid the going rate for inexpensive to average furniture. It's not a good deal, but it doesn't matter anyway because you probably won't have to buy that crap again for a long, long time. Can you post some pictures of your place?

what did I "lose"
-
i only do appliance and electronic shopping there. decent prices. their service warranties are better than the manufacturers anyhow.
besides, they are too lazy to fix things and just replace it all.
they do long time interest free too.
im a sucker for that.
-
I went to Nebraska furniture mart this weekend, too. But I didn't buy anything.
What does it really matter if the furniture is cheap, anyways? Is it going to break when you sit on it?
-

Best Buy won't haggle unless you buy a performance service plan.

Ever used a cheap chest of drawers? I shopped for a set there and everything was incredibly crapty. I mean, like Target was cheaper/higher quality.

Yeah, I understand that. Eventually the damn things won't shut or open. How about things like couches? I guess the fabric looked kinda shoddy.
For someone trying to save some money and get some cheap stuff for his apartment I think it's a pretty good deal.

I still have the first couch I bought after getting out of College... It was extrememly Cheap. And yes cheap furniture does suck. My couch frame is starting to come loose at the jounts and it creeks and cracks everytime you sit in it... and the fabric around the cushions is wearing to the point that you can see the padding underneath it. I bought it at some cheap furniture place in wichita and I bought a set of dresser drawers from Target and a wooden Computer desk from Wal-mart... Beleive it or not, the walmart furniture is lasting longer and looking better than any of the cheap furniture I've bought.
Still slowly replacing my cheap furniture, but I have vowed to never again buy the cheap stuff.

Is that a negotiated price or did you just pay what the sticker said?
And is it completely paid off or will the $1200 turn into $1500 through interest charges?
-
They will haggle with you, too. I enjoy that. 8)

You're just not trying hard enough. Flash greenbacks. Most people are just there to browse and see what kind of deal they can get, but may not be intent on purchasing. If you show the manager cash, he knows you are willing to spend. The floor hands may not have the power to negotiate, but the manager does. At the very least, you should be able to knock 4% off of a price just because they won't have to pay the percentage to the credit card company. Of course, you can't be afraid to walk out. Be sure to mention that you are heading over to Circuit City or wherever else. No business wants to lose a sale, and since there is so much profit built into everything, knocking 10% off of a price will not hurt them at all. These big companies just like to say it is their policy not to negotiate. It discourages most folks from doing it and maximizes profit. You just have to be willing to fight through the crap.
-
Or buy online and not deal with taxes and all that crap.
-
I don't think I'll ever be able to own anything but leather furniture. It's expensive but lasts forever if you take care of it.

free delivery too!!
(for people within 50 miles of the place)

No, it's awesome. The furniture I bought isn't cheaply constructed, should last a long time. And my apartment kicks ass, as a matter of fact. Brand new, and 4 minutes from my work. Not cheap, but I will save a ton on gas over the coming year or two.

I got a little chopped off the price on the chair/ottoman, but the rest was sticker. I wasn't informed I could haggle 'til I'd already checked out, but I plan to haggle on a TV when I go back in a couple weeks.
And it's all paid off...no payment plan or anything. Though they do have a no-interest-til-2009 deal going right now anyhow.
I don't think I'll ever be able to own anything but leather furniture. It's expensive but lasts forever if you take care of it.
I cannot stand leather furniture.
-
Did you say somewhere that your new job is at Sprint?
-
I wasn't informed I could haggle 'til I'd already checked out,
You weren't informed? Since when did this world change to the point where haggling isn't allowed? Since the day white man haggled the indians down to some beads for Manhattan Island have people been haggling. That's no different today. People are just lazy and easily defeated. If you wanted, I'm sure you could haggle over a case of Ramen Noodles at the grocery store. It just seems petty and pointless to haggle over a dime. All big ticket items can easily be haggled. Don't let them give you their spiel about company policy says they can't, such as Ashley Furniture, or other stores will do. Anybody in business will tell you that making nearly any sale is better than making no sale.
-

Actually the Indians that sold Manhattan Island didn't have rights to that land, it was the land of a rival group. Like you selling your neighbor's house while he's away and running with it.

Did you say somewhere that your new job is at Sprint?
Yeah, something about customer service rep..
I guess when I call into Sprint and complain about my next phone bill, I may have kougar24 on the line.
Hopefully, that will get my issue addressed much quicker.

Actually, I manage engineers (in Texas and Oklahoma) who write install specs to build and augment the network that supports the cell sites. kougar24 will more than likely classlessly blame network capacity for any ills that you call him with.

I didn't go through 5 years of hell to become a customer service rep. I'm a development engineer.
And yes, Jeffy, it was stupid of me not to try haggling. Just didn't even cross my mind until someone mentioned it after the fact.
-
That's what all the new customer service reps say.
If I had a dollar for every time i had a customer service rep tell me "I'm a development engineer", I'd be a rich man.

A friend just bought a solid Pine bedroom set for $900, and retail is $4000. Nebraska's a pretty cool store even though I've never shopped in their physical store.

Wouldn't that make the retail $900 and the made up, over-flated, ego boosting number $4000?

What a revelation!
I'm basing my opinion on having handled the furniture. It's solid. The only sketchy one might be the chair, because it's the actual one that was on the floor (last one in stock), but I got a discount on it, so I'm good with it.

That's the thing. CIS isn't engineering.

a) CIS is in the College of Eng., so whether you think it's engineering or not is irrelevant, and
b) aren't you taking 200 for credit in your chem. eng. curriculum?
-
a) only be technicality is CIS engineering. in many schools it's part of arts and sciences
b)no
