Thanks fats.

Yes, I donned the orange (bleh) tassle, listened to the (bleh) old lady speaker, and walked up the (bleh) damn Bramlage stairs on Saturday. Now I'm in purgatory for a couple weeks, then it's on to this "real world" thing you guys keep talking about.

Live with Mommy and daddy for as long as possible, esp if you have a girlfriend and save as much jack as possible.  I had like 6 grand sitting in my checking account before I bought a house and engagement ring, and I really wasn't trying to save.

I thought I was broke in college before all of that. :crybaby:

Here's a question maybe a couple of you could help me with..

I had an interview down in Georgia on April 27th.  They said that they would let me know within 2 weeks.  Well, still haven't heard from them.  I had to take a drug test while I was down there so they could be waiting on that still (no, I don't do drugs.....at least the traceable kind).  Should I call them or e-mail them or just sit tight??
Title: Re: Any Graduates?
Post by: ECN on May 15, 2007, 12:06:40 PM
at my first gig, i took a drug test and they said 2 weeks as well.

they called me on the 3rd and a half week.

they always take their sweet ass time. never expect it to be on time.

Did you ever e-mail them or call them to check up?
Title: Re: Any Graduates?
Post by: ECN on May 15, 2007, 12:14:21 PM
no. but it depends on the interview.

i have coached friends of mine what to do, and half call, half dont.

sometimes calling back annoys them,  but if you left the interview giggling and smiling...

a call might be a good idea.

the longer they take...the better the news.

That's what I have been repeating to myself the last few days.  Glad I wasn't just being retarded.

it means that they are at least thinking of how you will fit in...and have you narrowed down to less than 5 canidates.

you made the cut young man. now...more afternoons of price is right and judge judy.

ECN is right, they always take their sweet time.  Hiring someone is an extensive process for most companies anymore and getting all of their ducks in a row can take some time.

Having said that, there is always the possibility that they found your interview so comical that they didn't believe you actually expected a rejection call and figured you had been humiliated enough just during the interview.  Hope that helps-

I've had this happen several times.  At least I realized there was no way in hell I was getting the job before I walked out of the building, though.

Part of the problem though is that when you're young you don't always realize those things.

Sorry, what if you have an offer but are waiting to hear.  Basically, If they told you two weeks but you haven't heard anything in 3.  Don't assume that they didn't pick you.  Call and ask if it's been filled.
Title: Re: Any Graduates?

do NOT call and ask.
Title: Re: Any Graduates?
Post by: cireksu on May 15, 2007, 02:35:09 PM
do NOT call and ask.

why?  is it a knock against a person that they are excited to know whether they are still in the running?  Some businesses would probably think that is a plus.

There's nothing at all wrong with inquiring.

If they tell you two weeks, and it's been more than two weeks, I don't see anything wrong with calling and inquiring. Don't call before their specified period, though.

Graduating sucks unless you have a job lined up soon.

Thankfully, I landed a job back in November. Made this past semester much more relaxing.

There's is nothing wrong calling and asking.

However....if they said two weeks and you haven't gotten an offer yet there are generally two possiblities.

1.  You didn't get the job
2.  You weren't the first choice and they are waiting on choice 1, 2, 3....to make up their mind

Just because they said two weeks don't expect a rejection call.  Once the position is filled you may get a letter but that may not happen for a month now.

FYI...I'm a manager for a Fortune 500 company.

I can't think of a good reason to not ask if the job's been filled.

Lots more opportunities if you're willing to get out and about.

Well, I got an A in 200 (5 years ago, when they still taught Java), but I think that was mainly because my lab instructor, Eric Matson, was a badass.

I know absolutely nothing about Python. Why don't you ask the Hoags? They'll be in town this summer.

Honestly, MIS would probably have been a much better fit for me than CS, but since I survived, I don't think it'll matter much in the corporate world.

When we have several candidates we've interviewed it is generally a two step process to make the hiring decision.  First, does this person meet the minimum qualifications we are looking for.  If more people make it through that step than we need then its a ranking of who is the best.  Sounds like you made the first cut but they had other candidates that they liked better.  If you are really interested in this company then re-apply if you are still looking by then.
