Thank you, Ron Prince!
For several hours, everyone who went to nytimes.com was given a big, fat face-full of purple gridiron gloriousness. Restore the order!

If Varney's burned to the ground. I wouldn't feel bad at all.

Looks like the other poster is a KSU poster too.

Why do you say that? I am related to the owners, by the way.

Possibly because anyone who has attended KSU knows that the only option in town to buy textbooks is Varney's. I finally wised up and bought what I could off the internet but Varney's can charge whatever they want because they have no competition.

Don't forget the mug on the desk. :woohoo:

I don't understand why people take that stuff personally. If I had a successful business that you disliked, I could give a ratts ass.
-
Plus it would probably be awesome for Varney's it's probably insured out the wazzou and they could build a Varney's superstore.
I would feel bad if anyone got hurt, but empty, no injuries. I wouldn't feel bad.

P.S. Books are insanely expensive at every single college book store in the universe.

If you don't want to spend a lot on books, buy used copies of older editions. It's really that simple! You will have to buy online, but that is how you maximize your federal loan dollar, or your parents dollar. But Varney's sucks, and it sucked 10 years ago. KSU students really have no choice besides the union.
This is a football board, stop cluttering it with the debate over the virtues and qualities of Varney's bookstore. The article was about health insurance, not Varney's ripping off students. For the kids on this board, health insurance is a very real issue. Be thankful you are covered through school, once you are done you will realize how much of a bitch it is and how much it really costs.
Back to football, Ron Prince is a bully and Josh Freeman is young and overrated playing behind an inept offensive line. All that said, I think we win 7 or 8 games this year. :ksu:

Yeah. It's not something that you can blame Varney's for, folks. The prices at Varney's are just like they are at bookstores of schools in major metro areas with tons of other bookstores around. Blame college textbook publishers and the generations of students before you who have paid ridiculous sums of money for textbooks. Anyway, w00t! National pub!

Tell them to stop raping kids with their book "buy back" prices
-
If you're dumb enough to sell a book back for pennies on the dollar, I have a hard time feeling sorry for you. Why should Varney's pay more for old books if they're luring enough desperate souls with the current rates?
-
Yeah, I learned early on to keep my books. Buy back doesn't even get you enough $ back to buy some Taco Bell afterwards. Those books are worth more as reference books later, or maybe your friends might take that class later.
-
Textbooks are so last century....need to get with the times and publish on-line.
-
Varney's should not be at fault for running a good business. I remember (and I'm not that old) when Varney's was a fairly small book store (the rest was a movie theatre, one of two options to watch a movie in Aggieville in fact) and waiting in line to go into the small basement to buy and sellback books. Then they were able to expand and buyout the Union bookstore as well as put a place in the mall; to me that's just a company that does good business.

I'm in a technical field, and I've used my college textbooks on many, many occasions since graduating (kept the vast majority). In a non-techical field where advancement means reading new material more than mastering the basics, old textbooks might not be so useful. If you must sell, hawk the damned things on e-bay for three times the jack.

Buy books on Amazon.com. Duh.

I remember both of those old theaters. The one where PI is now would have closed in the mid-90's, right? The last movie I remember seeing there was Batman Forever in 1995. (I actually thought it was a good movie at the time.) The one next to Varneys was open longer than that, probably early 2000s. I saw Stargate and Pulp Fiction at that one. The one in Westloop closed in 2000 I believe, but then may have reopened for a short time playing second run movies. Now we are stuck with only one option, and no student or military discounts anymore. :-[

Is the Warren group from Wichita still thinking of / planning to put theaters in near the Manhattan mall?

Interesting, I saw Pulp Fiction there too. $1 movie.

what i love are the teachers that change their required textbook every year, and put a preference on text books that they wrote three words in so they can get a piece of the action.
that crap is a racket.
and as soon as i can, i'm going to retire as a teacher and do the same thing. gravy train.

God I hope so...grew up in Wichita and the Seth Childs 12 is just depressing to go see a movie in for me because I'm so used to the West Warren.

I blame Varneys for the demise of Dark Horse. Now that was a great bar, and I know Varneys wasn't really to blame but having a book store where a classic bar used to be us just wrong and blaming the change in drinking age from 18 to 21 would be non PC.

Warren East blows away Warren West. Old Town is a close second because they don't allow kids after 8pm.

Best book buyback statement ever, "I'm drunker than a Haskell Indian on book buyback day."

The guy that runs Varney's is a Manhattan native I went to high school with...good guy and, obviously, a good businessman. Texts are a racket and always have been...don't blame the company that has done well for there being no competition....start a bookstore..its the American way.
The Campus Theatres used to be next to Dark Horse (next to Varney's) and the Varsity Theatre used to be down the street. In fact, the Varsity was the theatre that had the car dumped through the window in the first "we beat ku in football so we're no longer the worst" football riots.
Oh, and all of us who knew, miss Dark Horse.

Hey doctor clueless....When carmike came to Manhattan in 96, they bought out all 4 movie theaters [from first international, a flailing bankrupt company]. Then they proceeded to close each one down systematically (and proceeded to expand Seth Childs, giving you renovated theatres, better seats, and now all digital screens) because they made no profit. Don't rag on carmike because they made good business decisions, especially ones that are virutally the same thing that Varney's did in hindsight, IE:bought out the competition.
Try using another company as your scapegoat.
-
Students ought to just buy from amazon as was mentioned before. I did for 3 years and saved about 30% on average. Each year, One semester I priced my books at varney's at about 400$ for 5 classes, I got all on amazon for about 250$.

If anyone was ragging on Carmike for anything, it's for being a piece of crap theatre. It takes more than new seats and a digital projector to be a nice movie theatre.... Its okay, you probably just don't know any better. But because of Warren Theatres; I will never watch a movie that I'm dieing to see anywhere else than Warren East, Warren Old Town, or Warren West. Creating that kind of following is what I call a "good business decision".

perhaps you should start by actualling reading the quote all the way through here.
To sum up the issue for retards who can't read: Why are you bagging on Varney's when Carmike ran all the other theatres out of town.
To sum up my response for retards who can't read: Carmike didn't run anyone out of town, they bought all 4 theatres from another company and shut them down as they became profit-less (good business decision).
Did I say anything about what makes a great theatre? No, I simply said that they have improved the theatre from what it was or would have been if we would still have first international. Your mileage might vary on whatever you consider as an elite theatre and might be better served somewhere else.
-
I was not trying to bag on Carmike. In fact, I'm glad they made the upgrades they did in recent years, and if the other theaters did not make money, I guess you can't blame Carmike for closing them. I just think it is too bad, though, because it was kind of cool to have movie theaters in Aggieville. The more entertainment options, the better. And it would sure be nice to have second run movies playing at the Westloop theaters as a cheaper option than $7.75. But again, if the market cannot support those theaters, then I have no reason to harbor ill will at Carmike. When I lived in Wichita, I went to the Palace theaters quite often because you did not have to spend an arm and a leg on movie prices or concessions there, so it would be nice to have that here. I would have thought the market would be good for that here, too with all the students and military personnel in the area, but I have not done any in-depth study of the issue. As for Varney's, I never said anything for or against the way business is handled. All I did was inquire why cireksu wouldn't care if the place burned to the ground.

To sum up the issue for retards who can't read: Why are you bagging on Varney's when Carmike ran all the other theatres out of town.
Nobody on this thread who was "bagging on Varney's" said anything relating to Carmike "running all the other theaters out of town".
In fact, nobody including me was blaming Carmike for it in the first place. All I said was that A) We are stuck with only one option, and B) there are no student or military discounts anymore which there used to be. Both of those things are facts, not opinion, so why get all defensive about Carmike? Why am I "doctor clueless" again?
-
Let the pissing match begin...
Did I say anything about what makes a great theatre?
No, but you were all over Carmike's nuts; all defensive at the sight of any negative discussion of Carmike Theatres.
Then you tried to guilt trip us into accepting the trash that Carmike expects manhattan residents to accept:
(and proceeded to expand Seth Childs, giving you renovated theatres, better seats, and now all digital screens)
Keeping up with the times isn't enough to consider making a theatre better.
Then this post:
Don't rag on carmike because they made good business decisions,
Prompted this reply:
If anyone was ragging on Carmike for anything, it's for being a piece of @#%$ theatre.
You were the only one that immediately assumed people were comparing what Varneys did to what Carmike did. Maybe it's just me, but when I read back through this thread, I see any discussion's of the movie theatres in aggieville as reminiscing; and any complaints of Seth Childs as only being complaints of what a @#%$ty theatre Manhattan is stuck with.
I didn't care that they closed down the other theatres... They sucked to.
Also, I could give a @#%$ about varneys... The only reason I chimed up on this thread is because you were absurdly defensive about someone saying something negative about Carmike theatres. Actually, I make a point to visit Varney's every time I come back into town, because I love the store.
So, pull the dick out of your ass, calm the &*$@! down. And have a coke and a smile. .... Unless you're a Pepsi fan... then we can get into an argument as to why Coke is a better Company than Pepsi... :jerkoff:
-
I don't give a crap who you're mama's new baby daddy is or how many Carmikes you've got hanging off your family tree, that is one lousy place to watch a movie. It sucks. Remodeled? How long did they have to wait to get carpet that looks like the whole Brady Bunch had a nasty food poisining incident two Thursdays before Jan met George Glass?
It sucks as a movie house. I'd rather watch way old crap at home than see any of the bullcrap crap they show there new.
Manhattan used be a respectable place for next to new movies. Carmike sucks big rotten eggs and they've ruined the whole town. It's a craphole.
But that's just what one viewer thinks.

The reason I am defensive about Carmike is because I obviously worked there. No, I'm not saying Carmike is some great company, because frankly they aren't, but people always bitch and complain about how they feel so mistreated and Carmike ran everyone else out of business. Only about 10% percent of the people actually know the real story and everyone else seems to just think Carmike is a piece of @#%$, big guy ate the little guy, or whatever else you want to blame them for.
Out of curiousity, I'd certainly like to know what makes the Warren's so much better of a movie theater, in your opinion. Now, I'll be the first to admit, I've never been to a Warren's, so I won't pretend to compare the two.
The things I do know that might be considered 'better':
1) vip tickets, with balcony and beer, which isn't a great argument if you are bitching about ticket prices in the first place.
2) they probably have better sound, but realistically we aren't talking about huge superiority, this is minor at best.
3) student and military discounts?
I'd like to preface the student discount by one thing. How many people live in wichita?
According to Wiki--The Wichita-Winfield Combined Statistical Area also includes Cowley County and has an estimated population of 618,641. The only 2 colleges that I know of off the top of my head, WSU and friends. Let's just give them the benefit of the doubt and say 50k people go to both schools.
12:1
Manhattan = ~45k people. 2 colleges, KSU has an attendance of over 20k, not sure on exact numbers.
2:1 basically
Now you could probably argue JC + miltary in this argument, but I think you should understand my argument here.
You cannot survive as a business when <50% of your revenue is given out in discounts. (this was a 'good' business decision for better or for worse)
btw, this quote-- "Keeping up with the times isn't enough to consider making a theatre better." is one of the most rediculous quotes I have ever heard. Are you seriously telling me that digital isn't better than film? geezus dude....don't let an argument cloud your judgement.
-
You really need to see a movie in the warren...
FWIW, I don't care about $ when it comes to seeing a movie. I used to work at Dickenson's Northrock 6 in Wichita, and when there was a movie I wanted to see badly; I paid to see it at the Warren. How many people do you know would pass up watching a movie in an empty Auditorium for free to pay 6.50 at a theatre on the complete opposite side of town? I'm not a student anymore, nor am I in the military; and like I said, when it comes to watching movies, $ is no object, so the discounts don't mean anything to me.
What makes the warren great?
Employees: Everyone is dressed professionally; uniforms fit properly, greet you with a smile and take pride in there job.
Architecture: Simply amazing... The only thing I can think to compare it with is Ameristar in KC. Vaulted ceilings, marble floors; a fire place with leather chairs outside the bathrooms.
Auditoriums: Let me ask you this... You're also a theatre guy. How often would you say a movie sold out... outside of opening weekend? Not nearly as often as when the theatre was at 75%-90% capacity. Why are there 500 seats crammed in an auditorium that generally only sells 300-400 people on a busy night? Wouldn't it make more sense to make the isles and seats larger than cramming seats uncomfortably that no one will ever sit in? Warren thought of that. When you sit in a Warren seat, you have room to spread out your feet; an arm rest for each chair; get up and go to the bathroom without having to crawl over people... Because of this one fact alone, I'll never see a movie anywhere else.
Audio/visual: To start off; Warren theatres don't have commercials... so there's no sitting through sprite or pepsi ads for ten minutes before the previews even start. But every auditorium has both a digital projector and a film projector, although, it's been a couple years since I've seen film run through an old projector. You'll never see gummy bears stuck to the screen, and if one were ever torn, it would be replaced immediately... none of this crapty patching business... Sound is top notch... and you'll never hear a movie jump from Mono to stereo to Dolby while the movie is running... (an event I experienced many times at Seth childs)
Listen, I worked in a theatre for 4-5 years, ran projection for a year of that, and regularly strung up a movie to watch with just me and my girlfriend after closing several times. I'm a snob when it comes to watching movies, I can admit that... But if you consider yourself anything of a movie aficionado; you owe it to yourself to watch a movie in at the warren.
-
btw, this quote-- "Keeping up with the times isn't enough to consider making a theatre better." is one of the most rediculous quotes I have ever heard. Are you seriously telling me that digital isn't better than film? geezus dude....don't let an argument could your judgement.
BTW
I wasn't saying anything about digital not being better than film; I was saying that everyone is digital now... hence "keeping up with the times" Who gives a crap that Seth Childs claim to greatness is something that everyone has. If I owned that theatre, I'd gut every auditorium; and the only thing I'd likely keep is the Projectors.
It's like saying:
"Hey guys! Come to my house!!! I have indoor plumbing!!!!" :peek:
-
How much does a movie at the Warren go for?
-
I would of loved to have several million dollars just laying around to build a good theatre in Manhattan, but unfortunately, I'm a few million short.
For the record, I was hired straight to the booth, so I worked up there for four years and management for my last year till I finally graduated.
I think the major difference here is corporate vs locally owned. Our new hires are paid 5.15/hr and likely don't see a raise anytime they work there, if they do get a raise, it's 15 cents an hour or some non-significant amount. Yes the morallity of the staff is pretty futile. There is no hope of a raise and you do is sweat your ass off for a bunch of people bitching about prices you can't control and you get treated like crap to boot.
I'll agree that the staff uniforms suck and some are idiots, but I'm going to disagree with you on the employee professionalism. Yes, they might not be the most professional staff, but we have to work with what we are given. Frankly, if I was going to a movie, I don't care what the staff are doing/what they look like, so long as I get my ticket and they point me in the right direction. :bs:
Architecture...again, not the reason I'm going to watch a movie. Sure, it's nice to see the vaulted painted sky cieling or whatever, but honestly, I don't care about the facade. Hopefully I'm not standing around the lobby long enough to give a crap. meh. :bs:
Auditoriums--personally I like the new setup that carmike made. It is 100x better than it used to be. Sure it would be nice to have armrests on both sides, larger seats, and extra area, but again, this goes back to local vs. corporate. That crap just isn't going to happen at corporate level, they want as many people as you can pack in there and let me tell you why in a few minutes.
audio/visual--Carmike was the first of the big chains to go all digital (not just your main auditoriums, all of them)--that in itself is a pretty impressive feat when you think about the amount of screens that are now digital. when they replaced the projectors, they took care of the sound as well. That shouldn't be a problem with popping in and out any longer.
Now for my soap box...I truly laughed about the gummies on the screen, I remember that crap when I was there and we couldn't knock the damn things down since they were in the upper left corner, but we tried. Unless I was going to go get the 30 foot ladder with the 20 foot vertical extension, that was the only way they were coming down and I'm afraid I don't get paid enough to fall 50 feet. &@#% THAT. The god damn ladder was scary just seeing it set up.
When it comes down to it, I am as bad or worse when it comes to watching my movie. I want crap perfect, I would check the sound 50 times, the frame 50 times, and check the sound again. When I go to other theatres, the first thing I look for is to see if it is in frame. You could say that the shine for everything but the movie has worn off on me because I went to the same place for five years, frankly I didn't give a crap what it looked like (including the huge pop stains from hell in the lobby all the time). However, I could see as an outsider, if you walk in, you want the place to look nice, you'd like to see the neon, the lobby to look clean, etc. I can buy into that, however on the same hand, you and I both understand that people go to a movie literally once or maybe twice a year on average, if that. This is why seats is important, especially for chains. If we don't have room to put their asses in our seat, we have lost revenue and likely, they won't come back to see the movie (if they even go see it at all).
This all leads into a catch 22 though. How do you make your staff and lobby look good without spending a crap ton of movie on it. At what standard must you hold for normal people to say '&@#% this place, it looks like crap.' and lastly, what is your sweet spot so you can hit max people vs satisfaction and still have them come back for another movie.
I can tell you another thing...carmike always treated us like the red-headed step child of the chain. We made more money than pretty much the whole district combined and we still couldn't get a tech on site to fix our crappy stuff. Unfortunately, when the tech showed up, he didn't know how to run this old crap and fix it either. We would literally run with half broken platters all the time, sometimes having to manually move the damn film from one platter to another for a show because we couldn't get it to payout correctly and it would usually wrap.
I could go on and on for crap that could of been better. There is no end to that so I'm not arguing that point. I really do think though, if seth childs was local, it would be night and day. From what I am told though, the new equipment works really well and they have had very little issue with it. Being the old school theatre guy, I'm there for the movie and sound, that's it. I don't buy anything, just want to watch my movie, which for all purposes now a days, I do at home and have been to a movie theatre 2 times in the last 4 years since I quit.
I do miss it though, working upstairs was a tough job, but we got away with a lot of bullcrap too. I think I watched an average of 3 movies a week while I worked there...had/met a lot of friends there.
I am also curious though, how much do they pay starting out and what do the movies run? We had a few people every year from the warren's come in and apply, they all walked away from an offer of 5.15 :)
-
I never worked at warren; so I have no idea what they get paid...
It appears that you sub-conciously agree with me that Carmike sucks... atleast on a corporate level.
As for the Architechture... It's really more awe inspiring than it is anything. I love busting someone's cherry on the Warren East and getting to watch their eyes widen as they walk in... Damn dude... you really need to see a movie there.
And back to the seating.... Answer me this... Even when a movie is Completely sold out... How many people come back out and get a refund because they can't find seats? Like, I said, I never worked at Carmike, but Dickenson's Northrock was similar... and a "sell out" to us was reaching 95% capacity. Even then 5-10 people walked out because it was too crowded. So, even when the auditorium is sold out... there's still 20 or so seats open. So why make it uncomfortable for everyone by squeezing an extra 20 seats in there? At the Warren, I"m more likely to watch a sell out because my knees won't be rubbing up against the chair in front of me; my arms won't be bumping the person next to me, and I won't feel a cold mist every time someone sneezes.
If anything though, I'll admit that I'm being pretty hard on Carmike, The last movie I saw there... Won't say which it was in case you were still there... ;) Was ruined because of how crapty it was. It was several annoyances that compounded into one horrible movie watching experience. To start off the night, all of the trailers were arranged from Flat Screen to Scope, back to flat screen. The Projector housing... forget what it's actually called... wasn't lifted for a good 20 seconds and it appeared the bulb was burnt out; A couple people even got up and left it took so long... The entire movie was in Stereo... never even popped into mono or Dolby... and several of the splices were so choppy that even my wife (girlfriend at the time) could tell where they were. I realize that most people wouldn't even notice any of these things. But that's besides the point. The people that should notice those things weren't doing anything about them.
Look, I loved my time working in a theatre, but I'm realistic enough to realize that my theatre sucks. I could still get free tickets there but I still pass them up. But this is all because I've been shown the light when it comes to what a good theatre should be like. Next time you have a free weekend; drive to wichita and see a movie in the warren. If it's a movie you don't want to share with Kids - see it in old town. If you just want the best possible movie watching experience - see it in Warren east; If you just want to see where it all began - see it in Warren West.
But whatever... Gummy bears right? :billypopcorn:

As a whole carmike runs like crap....this is because they have too many dead weight theatres that can't pull their own.
If they got rid of the trash---or didn't buy out trash in the first place---then they could be a decent company...instead the feel the need to do the quick and dirty and buy up the old trash movie theatres to try and make a quick buck...
