WORST PICKS
Yamon Figurs, wide receiver, Ravens: Figurs is a skinny, undersized return specialist from Kansas State. Remember Darren Sproles? Sproles was more powerful and versatile than Figurs, but he had generally the same skill set. Sproles is still on the Chargers payroll, but he's always hurt, and his tendency to fumble makes him a liability as a return man. Figurs has a reputation as a tough cookie and can help out as an all-around special teamer. The Ravens don't have many holes, but that doesn't mean they can afford to take a specialist with the 74th pick in the draft.
Tank Tyler, defensive tackle, Chiefs: The Chiefs have an awful track record with defensive tackles. They've spent high picks on recent years on Ryan Sims, Eddie Freeman, and Junior Savaii, none of whom really produced. Part of the problem is that Carl Peterson and his coaches are too enamored with Combine heroes. Savaii was a bench press hero, and so is Tyler, who benched 225 pounds 42 times at the Combine. Tyler dogged a bit at NC State, but Herm Edwards believes he can reach him, just as Dick Vermeil always believed he could motivate any even the biggest slug. Tyler isn't a major reach in the third round, but he won't solve any problems in Kansas City.
Not only do they take shots at Yamon, they feel the need to kick Sproles while he is down. Plus, why not bag on another Chief DT draft pick. :twobirds:

True

Sproles is "always hurt". Well I guess he missed a season and has been in the league 2 seasons so he is hurt half the time. What a douche.
-
What the hell does Sproles being hurt all the time have to do with the type of player Figurs is going to be?
duchebag
-
FWIW...I think Yamon in the third round is a bit high for the Raven's pick...
but taking a swipe at Sproles' to support his point is downright retarded...oh, it's an "expert"..nevermind.

NFL loves speed and when you clock out the fastest at the combine, you are golden.

This statement is so chock full of hilarity (and completely false) that it makes my sides hurt. Sproles sucked at returns for the most part and was a dynamic RB. Figurs was fast, a good returner, and an excellent gunner (but a so-so WR).
In fact, the only thing they really had in common was that they went to K-State.

Great answer!
I'm not a scouting expert obviously, but someone with his speed is worth it I think. Look how many games what's-his-face from Miami won for the Chicago Bears last year as a return man.

I wanna smack this guys leg with a helmet and see how his leg feels aftwards. Sproles probably tried to walk it off too. What a bitch of a writer.

Figurs had the best 40-time of anyone in the draft and will be an awesome kick/punt returner. He could be the next Devin Hester.
Tank Tyler was a great pick by the Chiefs. He was 1st-team All-ACC, and could have been drafted higher if not for character issues.

Anyone have the fastest 40 times from the past few years and where they went?

Figurs is more valuable than Hester because he can also be used as a gunner and can be the number 3 or 4 WR. I doubt the Chiefs are planning on starting Tyler. I'm pretty sure our second round DT is who we are using for an immediate impact..

Actually, Sproles wasn't really horrible as a return man or anything. He wasn't the worst of the NFL by far. In college his senior year (if that's what you're talking about) he was definitely Mr. Fumblini.
-
It's true, Sproles was bad at fielding punts. He couldn't judge the spin on any punt coming off a left foot. Marty joked that if they couldn't teach him to catch them, they'd put someone else back there to catch the punt and then hand it off to Darren.
Still, Foxguy = Dumbass for the reasons you all have pointed out.

2005--Jerome Mathis, Hampton 4.32. Now with Houston Texans.
Jerome Mathis, a wide receiver from Hampton, and Matt Jones, a quarterback from Arkansas. Mathis posted an official 40-yard dash time of 4.32, but some insisted he was in the 4.2s – territory typically reserved for Deion Sanders. Meanwhile, Jones shocked people by running a 4.38. The fastest ever time for a QB.
Haven't been able to come across many others.

But this is what MSNBC Sports had to say:
Baltimore Ravens
Second-round pick Yamon Figurs of Kansas State was one of the fastest players in the draft and figures (ugh) to give the Ravens a lift in the return game. General manager Ozzie Newsome may have given Brian Billick the steal of the draft when he selected Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Troy Smith in the fifth round. Smith may be barely 6-0 on his tip toes and hurt himself badly with his performance against Florida in the national championship season and an unimpressive pro day showing, but the fact remains that Smith had about three bad games in his entire college football career and is a winner. Smith will sit and learn from Steve McNair and will go on to shock the league with his skills. He can make all the throws and has great leadership skills.
Grade: B-plus

Figurs as a gunner? You're trippin. If Jon McGraw gets lit up as special teamer cause he isn't physical enough, you're telling me that Figurs is going to be more physical? lol.

That's a great point, but Figurs was a great gunner at KSU. It will be interesting to see if that can translate to the NFL.
-
i don't think mcgraw was a gunner on st.
figurs was the best gunner i've seen at ksu.
-
Receiver who absolutely abused/crushed thorpe winner = bad pick. Thx for clarification foxsports.
-
The author ofd the article is exactly right. It is a little bit weird to draft a guy so high with such little ability for anything other than spec teams

great post
I don't see why they wouldn't use him as a gunner. He made several great open field tackles last season, plus the whole speed thing.
