With the discussion on alltime team I thought I try out a poll.
Assume you are going to re-do the season (don't assume any injuries or fumbles will necessarily occur)
It is a complete redo of the season.
Which team gives the best chance to win it all?
-
98 Cats were tougher, no way that team loses to Marshall at home. It took 2 years for that team to lose 3 games, not 3 weeks.
-
'98 team was incredible, and a lot of it had to do with the attitude that Bishop brought. The '98 D was much better (not as fast) as the '03 D.
Can you imagine if Sproles was on the '98 team
.........i think my mind just exploded
-
Bishop in '98.
I would rather have Bishop as well if I had to choose. He was a amazing qb and leader. He seemed to elevate the players around him. Very, very tough.
-

We lost the Marshall game because Roberson had a broken hand.

Bishop was tougher, he would have played with a broken hand and kicked ass too. Even so, that 98 team was tougher. I will take Jeff Kelly and Mark Simoneau over Buhl and Hickman any day of the week. Carter, Butler, Chapman, Cooper. The only player in that dbackfield from 03 that could have played on the 98 team was Washington.

The '98 D would have outscored Marshall themselves. I love the 2003 D but it could not hold the jockstrap of the 1998 D. Bishop was far better than Roberson, anyone that argues otherwise did not witness both in person. Does anyone know who the running back was in '97 or '98? Yeah, it was Hickson and Lawrence. They got the job done but were both about as good as Petrie. Sproles would have run for 2000 in '97 and '98. Our O-Line in '98 was the second biggest O-Line in football...not college football...Football. The Jacksonville Jaguars had a bigger line...barely. Big doesn't=better but in this case it did. Darnell was a great possesion receiver > Terry. Darren Howard was a beast. Kelly, Simoneau & Ochs at LB! Chapman and Cooper at S were monsters. 2003 had better CBs but Butler had a long NFL career and Dyshod got drafted. Top to bottem that was our chance at a NC and we would have run away with it if Sproles was on that team. Even without Bishop the 1998 team would have beat that Marshall team by 35.

that bitch in zona wouldn't have run to the cops if it was bishop.
she would have bragged to her friends.
bishop.

who was better than Dyshod and Jerametrius? I know of one kid that had a good game vs. OU, just can't think of his name. I guess that is my point, if I can't remember their names, they weren't all that. I would still take Carter and Butler. Andrew Schull, and Houchin were solid, I would take them over JoeBob, but Darren Howard was the best DE we had.

QFT. I couldn't have put it better myself. The 1998 team is my favorite KSU team by far. They were not only extremely talented, but they brought an attitude that you could feel when they took the field.
-
It was Eric Hickson and Marlon Charles. Mike Lawrence was gone by then. He graduated in '96 or '97.
-
Do you remember Cephus Scott from the 97 team?
-
If only I had a time machine :'(
-
Do you remember Cephus Scott from the 97 team?
Me? No, I don't remember him in particular. The name sounds kind of familiar, but I don't remember any specific plays or what position he played. Did you know there is a statue of Mike Lawrence in Lincoln, Nebraska?
-
I remember them saying that the UN statue was that of a guy tackling a KSU player, I didn't realize it was Lawrence. Scott was a DBack on that 97 team, I thought he was awesome, but Cooper was so good as a freshman on that 97 team that Scott knew he would split time at best. I think he transferred to a Texas DII school so he wouldn't have to sit out. That 98 team had a lot of talent and some depth too.
-
Do you remember Cephus Scott from the 97 team?
I seem to remember himhaving a "grill" before they were cool. Maybe confusing him with someone else.

Frank Murphy?

No Cephus "Lil John" Scott had the Gold Teef in 97.

It's a gang tackle by 3 or 4 players, actually. Anyway, I forgot earlier, but Frank Murphy spent some time at running back on that team in addition to Hickson and Charles. But he had a bad case of fumblitis and was on the bench a lot. Also spent a little time as WR and as kickoff returner.

Yeah, you're right. I remember bagging on Butler and Carter in the stands every game but, to be fair, the weakest link in that chain was not weak at all. We got so spoiled in '97-'98 that we really had to look hard to find issues. Those seasons ruined college football for me. Does anyone else remember the feeling that the season was over after the first loss? Hell, at the time I didn't even think of '99 as a "good year" :frown:. Spoiled.

Murphy was after those guys (Hickson, Lawrence). He was on the team in '98 but started really getting plays in '99. He came out of GCCC in the Beasley years. Per my above post those years felt like "bad years" :frown:. I would give anything to have those "bad years" back.
Murphy info: Holds KSU’s records with a 4.22 clocking in the 40-yard dash and a 42-inch vertical jump.

99 was a great year until that egg of a game we laid in Lincoln. That team was good enough to win up there, but UN was still pretty solid and Beasley was hurt, IIRC. But yeah, that did seem like a let down, and going to the Holiday Bowl that year was yet another let-down for the quality team we had.
But if 99 was a let-down, how about 2000? 3 losses. OU beat us twice, but if Morgan could have held on to some of those 3rd down passes in Manhattan, that game would have been quite a bit different.

1999 was my favorite year ever! Go ask a Missouri fan if 66-0 rings a bell. That game was totally insane. It could have been a lot worse if Snyder hadn't called off the dogs in the 3rd quarter. Then you had Larry Smith's wife going down the sidelines telling the Missouri players they suck. I laughed when I read about that. Plus we finished the season ranked higher than any other year at 6th in both polls. (In 1995 and 2002, we finished 6th in coaches and 7th AP).
-
the only reason roberson is even compared to bishop is because roberson won the conference championship. bishop was the better player and had the better team(s) its just that by 2003 nebraska and colorado werent as good as they used to be and we choked against aTm in the 98 title game.
-
KSU had 21 consecutive regular season conference wins spanning from 10/11/97 to 11/9/99. This conference record was tied (but not broken) by Texas last year. KSU prevented it from being broken. 8)

Fantastic. I will forever live in those glory days. The question is, will we ever have another stretch like that? If we get Arthur Brown we may.

Wrong. Texas hit 20 consecutive regular season wins. Our record stands alone.

I discuss the 1998 vs 2003 teams in the "Your All K-State team" topic thread.
Hands down, the '98 squad was superior. Too many firsts on that team. Yes, the 2003 team is Big 12 Champions, but the 1998 season was an experience.

Really? Wow, that is great. Apparently the 21-game Texas streak counts their CCG win vs. Colorado. Too bad we can't count our CCG vs. A&M. :-[

the big 12 was not good in 1998.
03 big 12>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 98 big 12.
-
Most college football fans didn't know who Ell Roberson was. They all knew about Bishop.
-
Can I have the 03 offense with the 98 Defense?
-
the big 12 was not good in 1998.
03 big 12>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 98 big 12.
If you look at the big 12 in 98 and 03:
98 03
North teams winning% .597 .538
South teams winning% .549 .597
North teams ranked (yr. end) 3 2
South teams ranked (yr. end) 2 2
If anything they were equal (overall) in 98 and 03, but in 98, the North was better, therefore more difficult for KSU in '98.
-
Nu was the only decent team in the North and they were overrated winning 2 of the last 3 national championships or whatever they did in that stretch will do that, they lost to the only good teams they played all year. The North both years was about equal IMO. But the 03 south is light years beyond what the 98 south was.
-
for as great as that '98 defense was, it was young in the backfield. cooper, carter and butler were all undergrads.
cephus scott was a playa, but couldn't get on the field. he transferred somewhere down south (texas?) to get pt. always tight with coach though.
there's a great pic of him and coach after a game somewhere. if i have time later, i'll find it.

I think that pic you speak of was from the 97 Fiesta Bowl.
Cireksu, you forgot Missouri was a bowl team in 98 and so too was Colorado. Just b/c the South wasn't tough doesn't mean the Big 12 was down. The North (KSU & UN) carried the Big 12 until 2000. The championships won by UT and A&M were big upsets.

Roberson wanted to play, Snyder wouldn't let him.
I like BISHOP in 03. Although I like Roberson a lot, he did have some costly mistakes in 03 that hurt us, and if Bishop was with that offense it would have been good. That being said, yet again, I still liked Roberson.
-
I like Bishop in 98, except for the A&M game. Then I want Roberson, just for that one game.

I think he means that in his scenario, there would not be a Purdue game. Bishop comes back to face Tennessee.

Ding ding ding!
-
Bishop was second in the heisman vote in '98 behind Ricky Williams who had just broke the all time rushing record.
-
bishop got more heisman votes in '98 than crouch did when he won it.
-
Karma was a bitch, when Mike decided to leave for Arizona in 2003 during that season's big 12 championship team. Roberson and Company looked completely unstoppable in that game. KSU was playing like champions in that game.
A&M is a great team, but we should have won that game with the players we had. I still get nightmares of that phantom TD.
-
even jesse tetuan looked like an all american at arrowhead.
the stars had aligned.
-
I have spent a few evening re-watching games from 1998 and 2003. Roberson ran with a certain kind of lazy mentality because he had an excellent offensive line. I'd trade Lecky and Lilja to the 1998 team and have Lecky as center Eby and Lilja as guards.
On the defense, I'd pull Ochs off, and replace with Buhl. Move Rashaad Washington to safety next to Cooper. Sproles obviously next to Hickson because Murphy was so hit and miss.
I'd have to look at the rosters so more to be sure, that's just off the top of my head to improve the team for Bishop and not lose to A&M despite younger stoops being focused on moving to Norman.
-
James Terry in place of Aaron Lockett, perhaps? Lockett was a fairly good complement to McDonald, though. McDonald had the size and Lockett had the speed. But Lockett never had as good a season after 1998, either.
-
i would have loved to have seen coleman on that '98 team.
unfortunately, we're in a '98 vs. '03 discussion.

McDonald, Terry, Lockett

better option.
quincy morgan was on the '98 team. play him.
-
who blows a 27-12 lead in the 4th quarter?
dear god we were so close.
-
Who continues to play hard in the 4th when down 27-12?
F'n A&M.
-
they put their punter under center for a while.
cryin out loud.
kill this thread for dredging this bile up again.

I actually watched that game down at The Aggie Lounge. (The Lou) I think it was not too nice out, or maybe I didn't feel like walking. Either way, you know a bar is cool when you will watch a big game there, on the 19" tv, rather than go somewhere with a better set-up. But, then again, the beers down there were stupid cheap, maybe thats why I was there.
