Meier is way overrated by fans.
He never turned out to be as good as many people claimed he would be. Many of those same people love to make excuses for him now.
Fans really shouldn't be giving him serious consideration in discussions about the starting quarterback position. Yet they are.
-
actually, he had great statistics for a first year player, even with the shoulder injury and inability to practice. if the defense in '04 did anything there would be no question about his ability. he's my starter at this point.
-
chum, from your avitar I know that you have a cucumber down your pants. Meier, if he recovers from the surgery will be at the least as capable as any of the others.
-
He may very well be all of those things you say and still be a big disappointment as well. If a healthy Meier is as capable as any others, we could be in for another long year.
I'm holding out hope that one of them will turn out to be something special. In my opinion, Meier has to this point shown that he is not going to be something special.
I'm really not trying to bag on the guy at all. If he's the best, I'm all for him as the starter. I am just truly surprised that so many fans are inclined to rate him highly at this point.
-
Anyone else extremely concerned that Evridge is allegedly the current #1? We have 4 1/2 QBs and the best we can do is a guy that went huge spans without a completion, and we're switching to a west coast offense?
I keep flashing back to that fuqin NU game last year, particularly the first half when he couldn't hit his ass with both hands.
-
"Meier is our best QB" = "My preference is that Meier is our best QB"
I just don't get the Meier lovefest. Yuck.
-
1. evridge
2. freeman
3. webb
4. meier-way overated. did anyone else see those balls he was throwing on Saturday?

yea, his first TD should have been/would be an interception in a big 12 game. that said i think he would make a very good backup qb. probably more consistent than webb.
-
Okay, I've been quietly reading these posts long enough. That last couple of comments gave me the drive to actually register and have some input.
That first touchdown was on a freak'n dime. Three inches to the left or the right and it would have either been picked off or pass interference. Sure, it was thrown into double coverage, but the receiver was in front of the coverage. In order to pick the ball off, they would have had to come over the top of him. Not a badly thrown ball. Find a replay and watch it again.
Not that I believe Meier should be the #1 starter, Webb, definitely proved to me that he wasn't last in line, Everidge is capable of playing in the Big 12, but I don't think he is a starter unless he improves drastically over last year. Honestly, I'm waiting to see how much Freeman matures. If he is the best QB at the start of Next season, there is no way we should red shirt him. The one thing Meier has going for him is his ability to read coverage and his accuracy. His decision making is not always up to snuff. That I'll gladly admit.
-
my point was really referring to how slowly the ball was traveling. he has no arm strenght, probably as a result of the surgery. it was a well thrown ball but against texas it would have been picked off. that said he knew we werent playing texas at the time and threw it. my only problem with meier is the arm strength and occasional decision making. he was impressive in the spring game and i think the type of offense we might run will cover up at least some his lack of arm strength because of all the short passes. i still think he would be an excellent backup to everige and that we should redshirt freeman.
-
My biggest problem with Meier is that he's never won a Big XII game, even though he's played in several.
-
Would you still want to Red shirt Freeman if he was heads and shoulders beyond everone else? I agree with you that I would like to see him around for an extra year, but only if he is no higher on the playing field than everyone else.
Also, I don't recall how fast the ball was moving the other day, but I do remember watching the DB's come in pretty fast. Regardless of how hard the ball was thrown, they didn't get there in time. Maybe it would have been different against UT maybe it wouldn't of; but I do remember Meier Launching some pretty deep balls 2 years ago. If he does have a lack of arm strength, It has to be from the surgery... If that's the case, maybe he can get it back in time.
I was more agitated by the post that ranked each QB with Meier last on the list. If someone is going to have an opinion about something, I'd like to see more to support it than one line surounded by a couple of quotes. No negativity towards anyone, I just love a good debate.

There are so many factors to one game that you can't place it on one positions shoulders. So what he's never one a single big 12 game. Is it one person's fault that we've sucked the past two years? Give me one example where he specifically did anything to lose a game that no other player could have made up for, or didn't make a mistake themselves? There are soo many factors for why we were terrible the past couple of years; no one will ever know all of them.
-
obviously if freeman is that much better than everyone else he should play. but from what ive seen and heard, through prince and coaches and others, that its still a tight race and all so it just doesnt seem to be the case. i think he should start or be redshirted. he is obviously the qb of the future b/c he looked good in the spring game. i just dont want to waste a year of him as a backup unless we do what missouri did last year with their freshman qb and give him a series each game.
-
i kind of contradicted miyself in that post but basically if he isnt redshirted he needs to see a significant amount of PT this year.

He sat himself out of the first half of the ku game.
Also, welcome to the board.

Understand completely, but remember, this is a guy that was in high school 4 months ago, not 1 year ago. And he is already on level playing ground with people that have been playing in Big 12 games for 3 years. Can he not excel past them in the fall? I don't want him to be a back-up either. I think we have 2 other guys more than capable of doing mop up duty or coming in to give the offense a new look if stalling against a particular defense.
As for Mizzou, how much better are they going to be this year with a Sophomore QB that has played before? Mizzou did that out of necessity. It was a smart move. I wouldn't want my only bullet in the barrel to be the one that I have no idea will shoot or not.

I think he won the Iowa State game in 2003.

Thanks for the welcome;
That upset me as well and I questioned his character after that game. But I honestly believe he did that because he was hurting and felt that he would not be a contributer to the team on the field. I'd like to know if he was told to come into the game in the last half, or if he was begging to. That would have been the defining moment of Meier.
I know a winner should always want the ball in their hands. Hopefully he learned from that mistake.
-
I am not sure what to think about Meier. I guess my concerns are if he can stay healthy if he takes a few hits and what is his arm strength now.
I thought he looked good in the spring game, but that was the only practice I saw, so I am not going to judge too much off of a couple of series.
With Lopina leaving, I think DM will be one of the 2 top QBs on the depth chart. I just hope between AE and DM, that someone pulls away from the other because they are practicing very well.
I would rather have AE, but if DM wins the job and proves he is the better QB by the end of August, then i will support him.
-
I am sorry to agitate you FBWillie. I just believe that Evridge has a better grasp of the offense that any QB that we have, and with the changes he will adjust quicker. I know that he needs to improve his game from last year, but in most games he was running for his life. I also want to point out that he is just a sophomore. Josh Freeman has the look of a great QB and if everything comes together for him, he is the guy. Dylan Meier seems to make decisions slower than he should which has always put the team in bad situations. Webb is still probably the best athlete of the bunch, but I don't see Coach Prince taking a chance on him this year. I want to expand on the throws on Saturday nite. It looked like that at least one, if not two of his passes on that first drive would have been picked in Big 12 play. After the first drive, he showed nothing other than a bad pick and several throws into the ground. I am sure that he is a great team player and wants to win as bad as anybody, but I don't believe that he gives us the best chance to win. I am sorry for the short answer earlier, but I am at work and I wanted to get my 2 cents in.
-
Some of you guys are out of it. Do you all remember when in the spring of '04 game when Meier threw a deep ball something like 70 yards and overthrew the guy?
I thought Meier had good velocity on his deep out that he threw on the money during the game. There is alot of rehab left to be done, but people who think he throws softer than their sister are high on crack.
-
Spring 04, 70 yards, ball hits ground
Spring 06, 10 yards, ball hits ground

Any game Webb was given credit for winning would have been won by a healthy Meier as well.

Seriously, has Meier ever been healthy? Oh, and STFU.

Chum = tardbasket.
Yeah, Meier was healthy until the '04 oline decided it liked watching people run past them more than blocking.

If you're really that impressed with Meier's mediocre stats and wish to keep making excuses for him, KStateFans is a great place for you. GPC is even better in that regard. We certainly don't need you over here to "set the record straight."

I am not saying he is the second coming of Joe Montana, just that you don't know what you are talking about.

This simply does not follow from what I said. I believe that if you give it some thought, you'll be able to figure out why.

That's a tall order for a ku fan.

I'm not completely sold on Meier, but I do see some definite positives about him. While his arm strength is not great, it is enough for an offense that stresses shorter routes. (See Joe Montana's 49ers vs Elways Broncos, both quarterbacks arms were well suited for their respective schemes and each had great success) Also, kurt Warner is not blessed with a great arm, but with the great speed the Ram's WRs had, they were able to turn short slant routes into long gains consistantly. (And those short routes left Isaac Bruce open downfield in single coverage; imagine Jordy downfield with no one but a free safety on him.) I love Meier's leadership skills, his intelligence, his toughness, and his dedication to becoming better. I remember being very frustrated with Beasley in spring practice, I didn't think he had enough tools to be a great quarterback, and I was more than pleasantly surprised with his win/loss record. If Meier stays healthy he will a great asset to the team, time will tell if he will be the starter or not. FWIW I feel if AE improves as much as he did last off season, he will most likely win the nod.

I am not saying he is the second coming of Joe Montana, just that you don't know what you are talking about.
I said that he has not lived up to the hype, has only been mediocre, and yet many seem to be in love with him. I also took a jab at him because he has not been healthy for the large majority of the past two seasons. I find it hard to believe you take issue with this (despite the fact that you did) because it is so plainly true. I'm guessing you think that I don't know what I'm talking about because I am not satisfied with what I consider to be mediocrity. If this is the case, go ahead and tell me why you think I should be satisfied with his performance on the field. Can you successfully argue that what he has done is better than mediocre?
-
I agree with chum1.
-
Roberson was mediocre until halfway through his junior year; you can throw beasly in that category as well... My point not many people come in and look like a stud their Fresh & Soph Year.
Regardless of who is the starter come August ( http://www.wildcatdaily.com/view/article.asp?sectionid=Home/News&id=574-2006-04-29-84594-55 ) I’ll back them because I trust the coaching staff that is seeing first-hand more than anyone on this forum is.
I prefer to be a spectator than a coach wanna-be. Not saying I won't have an opinion, but outside of a couple of meaningless spring practices and one spring scrimmage; nothing has happened. So much could change between now and then, and I don't think it is wise to rule anyone out.
-
I think Roberson and Beasley as underclassmen showed a lot more potential than anyone since. Roberson's game at OU in 2001 was absolutely sick.
At the same time, Roberson and Beasley were pretty mediocre passers. Prince's QBs will need to throw the ball with a lot more accuracy than those two. Even Beasley, the more accurate of the two, had difficulty with short dump-off passes at times (see Nebraska in 1999).

Lets look at several games though:
1. Texas A&M in Collie Station. Had the defense done anything, and freakin Sproles hung on to the football, KSU likely wins that game. DM peformed admirably and moved KSU up and down the field.
2. With a torn apart shoulder he single handidly willed KSU back into the game against CU in Boulder ... the Defense of course promptly screwed it up and no Overtime.
3. He plays the whole game against ku in 2004, KSU walks out of there with a win, he threw for over 250 yards in the 2nd half alone.
