Fred Brown, Dwyer, Senior

By Stacy Hicklin
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Posted March 14 2007

He's like a storm. In one instance all appears calm, in the next it's raining 3-pointers, steals and jumpers. Before opposing teams have time to react, the damage is done.

Dwyer senior guard Fred Brown is the type of player coaches worry about. His explosive scoring ability can taunt coaches as they wait for him to get hot and hope they can contain the run once it happens.

Brown is perhaps the most feared player to match up against in Palm Beach County, which is why he is the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Class 6A-5A-4A Player of the Year.

"Skills wise he is by far the best player in the county," said West Boca coach Joe Nappi, whose team is in the same district as Dwyer. "He can take over a game and win by himself.

"Even when he's not playing well, he's playing well. Scoring 17-18 points is a good night for most people, for him it's an off night."

Brown, a preseason Fab Five selection, finished the season averaging 19 points, 6.2 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 3.0 steals. Because of Brown's talent it came as a surprise to many when Dwyer (18-8) made an early exit from the postseason after losing to Sebastian River in the regional quarterfinals.

Entering his senior season as one of the most sought after guards in the country by college programs, Brown ended the hunt for his services early. In September, he orally committed to Kansas State University, signing with the Wildcats during the early signing period in November.

With his long arms and 6-foot-2 frame, Brown also can be a fierce defender for opposing players. His play in the passing lanes can disrupt opposing offenses, too.

Brown played just two seasons at Dwyer, having begun his career at Cardinal Newman. He played on the JV team his freshman year while dealing with academic eligibility and then played on the varsity his sophomore season.

William T Dwyer High School.

I doubt if there are many schools named after the other Dwyer.

I watched the video earlier - four or five times.  It's really nothing more than you would expect, but engrossing like a horrible car wreck or something.

I don't know.

I didn't exactly expect an extended close up after he shot the gun.  The end's pretty bad.
