I thought this was interesting in the context of the theory that Krause wanted/hired Patterson and Wefald said "&@#% that." 

From the alumni magazine in response to "How are you going to continue to satisfy your love for sports?":

Go to the games.  I just won't be the number one fan anymore.  I'll stay in touch with our coaches because they are friends for life.  I'll be more of a fan than the team owner.

They don't jokingly call him that. He as called himself that for several years. He signs his name as "the owner" (See: Doe's Eat Place). Snyder ordered that players referred to him as the owner during their pick-up game.
