The train is great if not still waking up and/or hungover.  Drank all day, hopped on pretty easy, bought many drinks and found the dining car this time that has really comfortable seats and a better atmosphere with other trainPAK'rs.  There's a canadian trash bar right across from the station that we were able to knock out a few last beers at before realizing I was 20 minutes off on when the train departed and had to hustle over.

Canadian customs guard assholes aren't a train thing.  The guy at the airport when we flew in was shitty just like the last trip's train guy was.  The train guy going out was originally dickish but then when it came out that I was there on a free reward night and flight, we started talking points and it was all good.

most likely human error due to fatigue/distraction.
bill was passed in 2008 that mandated electronic backup system to automatically slow/stop trains in overspeed situations (passenger and hazardous material trains only). congress gave until 2015 to get systems installed, and i think has since extended the deadline to 2018.

Wasn't this the first run for this train, though? How does a new train not have up-to-date technology?

the train has it, but my understanding is that EVERY train operating on a given line has to have it, otherwise they don't use it.

It's really inexcusable that this happened, on the very first run of a new route that they've been testing for weeks or longer.

Seems like you'd be overseeing everything real close to make sure nothing was screwed up on the first run ever.

Zack Willhoite and Jim Hamre, two longtime rail advocates, were among those killed in the Monday derailment of an Amtrak train near Olympia.

Willhoite was a member of the enthusiasts’ group All Aboard Washington, and he was riding the Amtrak Cascades 501 with Jim Hamre, a fellow member.

Lloyd Flem, a friend for 35 years and vice president of the group, said Willhoite and Hamre were also interested in rail policy — to promote rail, ferries and buses as alternatives to single-occupancy cars.

I wonder if Lloyd Flem is still going to be a train advocate now.

When you google All Aboard Washington now, the images are of the train wreckage.

They should probably remove the story just a little bit down about how the new service is going to improve on time performance.

This train did not have the mandated positive train control system. It was scheduled to be installed next year. Again how does a brand new train not have the latest safety systems?
