I think Vegas promoted the Patch story knowing he wouldn't win, but also knowing people would throw money on him because of the story.

MIL's ticket paid $55+.

It's been thirty years or so but I had fun betting horses there with my parents. Watched Colorado beat Nubb on the TV. IPA Dad wasn't real happy about my cheering for the buffs. He was getting some ugly looks. :)
