You have way too much furniture for an effective HT set up, kougs.

I would run wire to the right of the TV, under the furniture, and put a speaker stand to the left of the pillar and another to the right of the couch (in between the 2 couches)
Where did you get that overnight bag?

Do you have carpet? Hide it under that. Is this bitch of a pillar hollow? Is it a duct? If so, just go through it.

Carpet thing might be doable. Easy? How thick are the wires going to be?

Don't care about having a HT, per se. Just want better sound than what my TV puts out, and figured I might as well try to do the surround sound thing if I'm going to buy speakers. :dunno:

Get 16AWG, won't be noticeable at all under carpet.

Ok, after examining the construction documents, I'd recommend going through the ceiling. Maybe even getting in-wall(ceiling in this case) speakers.

And by joist, I mean the little wood sticks that make up the floor above. They generally go in one direction, meaning your wires have to go the same direction or you'll be drilling holes in the joists.

Sound Bars are great choices for LSSIQ types.   Much better choice than wireless speakers.

Carpet isn't bad. It sucks that the COLUMN is in the middle of the room. You may have to tear the carpet seams up a bit. If you want just better sound than what you have, get a sound bar. If you want pimpin' 7.1 surround sound, get an HT system.

Excellent work dumbing that down for me, thank you. How expensive would in-ceiling speakers be? Because there's no way I'd be installing that crap myself.

Also, what am I missing with the damn pillar? I think it's the ideal place to hang a speaker, and without it there would be no place for one.

I am on Team Pillar, forget all you haters.  :curse:

that set up looks like it would be a bitch to design an effective HT around.  what a son of a bitch.
ok, now let's talk stereos.  see the couch on the left?  there's a square pillar behind it.  tear into that whore and gut it.  replace the innerds of the square pillar with some audio components, possibly a sound bar.  problem solved.  you'll be watching top gun in 5.1 in no time.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

that's all fine and dandy, but then there's nowhere to put his swiss cake rolls and we're all just back to square one playing w/ our dicks here. that god damn pillar is the single most maddening thing that i will encounter all week.

Well, considering the column is probably structural, gl getting rid of it. It probably has furring (small stud walls around it) that could be used for hiding wires. In wall speakers aren't horrible cost wise. Installation may be a bit much. Hope you don't have insulation in your ceiling, or else I hope you know a good dry wall guy. Just get a sound bar if you're just fed up with your new tv's crappy sound.

And put a spoiler on the column and pimp it out.

90% sure the pillar isn't structural, and 100% sure I'm not getting rid of it regardless.

It's sturctural.  Why else would it be there?

It's definitely structural. The wall in front of your stairs, there is a beam going from that corner to the opposite wall. That beam bears on the column. It's not going anywhere. If you tap on it and it sounds hollow, it's because it has a column wrap. Like I said, just a stud wall going around it.

What's the best height, for optimized sound, to place the speakers?  Seated ear level?  Higher?

Answers:

  • No, the pillar isn't load bearing, but I'm not going to remove it. It's not hurting anything, and wouldn't help the speaker situ at all.
  • No idea what a joist is without googling it, let alone what kind my basement has.
  • If the ceiling is a problem, what other options would I have to hide the cord to the pillar? I can't think of another way.

Just a thought.  If you don't know what a joist is, you probably don't really know if the pillar is load bearing.  That's like someone who doesn't know what a spark plug is diagnosing a miss in the engine.
