Does it seem strange that, according to a criminal complaint unsealed on Monday by the Justice Department, a Russian woman stands accused of “acting as an agent of a foreign government” in part because she hoped “to establish a back channel of communication” with American politicians at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington?

It shouldn’t. As Jeff Sharlet, an associate professor of English at Dartmouth, has pointed out, the National Prayer Breakfast has long offered “a backdoor to American power.” And America’s homegrown Christian nationalists have evinced an admiration for Russia’s authoritarian leader that appears to have grown apace with his brutality.

Trump recently has become a Christian, and Putin has been a Russian Orthodox Christian for years.
Both Trump and Putin are nationalists who do not want their countries to become part of the liberal one world utopia where the State is God.
Where religion is snuffed out or controlled.  Like China.
Godless heathens call themselves Socialist Democrats - communists.  This is why they hate Trump and Putin.

Bill Clinton is a Southern Baptist, Obama is a Protestant, I’m a Mo. Syn. Lutheran.

I am LCMS too.  Point I was trying to make is socialism/communism believe the true God is the state, and all should worship the state.  The state must control all including property, the economy, and thoughts of society.   The Church or any religion is counter to socialism especially with thought control.  Putin and Trump are not choir boys and not the best examples of Christians, but they oppose the state becoming a replacement for God and worship.  The Russian Orthodox church has grown undr Putin.  Trump is talking us away from the path of becoming a socialist state and the religion of statism.  I think this is why the far godless left has such a virulent hatred for Trump and Putin.

Religion does definitely not try to control the thoughts or behavior of people!

It does, but for Christians it's by faith not by the fear of harm or destruction from a pure socialistic state.
