Gee, guys.  Maybe the media isn't biased against us after all and will talk about us if we actually rough ridin' win against a good noncon team for once.

We are the second best 2 loss team?

We get a chance to prove it against another ranked team very soon when we play Oklahoma State.

Did our season just turn on like a light switch or something?  This feels strange, doesn't it?

Yikes.

Good points about losses to 2 good teams and a win over a good one.  Still not convinced though if you watch us play.

The Wildcats enter the Power 16 thanks to last weekend's win over Florida.  With their only losses coming to Michigan and Gonzaga, oscar Weber's team now has a signature win to add to it's profile as they enter Big 12 season as the prime challengers to rival Kansas' reign.

It's too bad or actual ranking won't actually reflect that, I hate being one loss away from being unranked.

I'm starting to buy into the "college basketball is down" talking point.

Whenever someone says this it usually means that there isn't one or two dominant teams at the top of the poll, or the dominant teams are unexpected.  This doesn't effect teams 5-318.  I don't agree CBB is down & if I were Michigan I'd be pissed.

Goodman is a big proponent of using head to head as a tiebreaker for teams with similar records. So sandwiched between Gonzaga and Florida is about right.

Those of you that have been around for a while will remember John Gasaway as the Big Ten Wonk while those of you that haven’t are certainly familiar with his work at Basketball Prospectus and ESPN Insider. He just needs time probably.  I was pretty angry over that Purdue loss too.  Brought me right back.  He's probably just venting, but is still a pretty substantial dumbass given the rest of his rankings.  For every Mr Bread there are at least 100 Gasaways.  It's a sad truth about Illinois.

Illinois has some better wins on their resume than we do (Ohio St and @ Zaga).  Also have a bad loss (Purdue) and a couple games where they were flat blown out by mediocre teams.  Haven't seen them play, but I would guess toughness/dealing with adversity is an issue looking at that.  When they get down, they fold.

This.  They completely quit on oscar last season knowing full well he was going to get canned because of it.  This group of seniors has been thoroughly vetted as FPs.  This season looks to be heading in the same direction as last.  Good in nonconference (i.e., start unranked and work themselves into the top 25) and then completely fall apart once the Big Ten slate starts.  I hate them.

Well he has managed to become a multi-millionaire coaching basketball despite appearing to be a total dufus pud and six straight years of middling to poor results.  That takes some doing.  Certainly a possible display of bad assery to get paid millions to both simultaneously not coach somewhere and to coach somewhere.  Total boss stud move?  Definitely.

oscar has always been known around basketball as a tactical genius.  Everyone always points to his only really good season being with Bill Self's players, but doesn't someone have to coach them?  The last couple years at Illinois were not fair representations of oscar's ability to coach.  If he can take this team to the Elite 8, I think people might shut up and stop questioning him.

You're right.  Haven't done any of that, it's just blind hatred coming from ol' 8mp over here.

The last couple years at Illinois were not fair representations of oscar's ability to coach.

Do go on?  Why is this?  Was he handcuffed by something that kept him from recruiting and coaching to the best of his ability?  He won one NCAA tournament game in the last 6 years.  1.  In the last 5 years, K-State has won 6 NCAA games. At Illinois they missed the NIT twice in the last 5 years and missed the NCAA 3 out of the last 5.  Yet we are supposed to discount his long-term failures because he had success nearly a decade ago with a guy who is a top 5 NBA point guard and 4 other NBA players, that he didn't recruit.

I know you are new, and I don't know if you've been a long time lurker or what, but these arguments have been made ad nauseum over the last 9 months.  Almost nothing oscar does this year will change what I expect him to do over the remainder of his time at K-State.  The minimum expectations many had for this team before the year started were either a sweet 16 and top 3 or 4 conference finish, or at the very least a repeat of last year.  Stealing one more game in the tournament and getting to the Elite Eight will not make people "shut up and stop questioning him." At least not intelligent people.  Ask Bread and other intelligent Illini if hiring oscar was worth it.

oscar is responsible for 2 really bad seasons and 6 pretty mediocre years of basketball at Illinois. That's not some small sample size and its silly to disregard that. I've been more willing than most to give him a shot, but the bad in his coaching resume can't be easily dismissed.

Last year they started out 15-3 for their first 18 games.  They went 2-12 for their last 14.  I understand that is just one year of several not very good years, but does that kind of trend look like a coaching flaw to you?  Looks more like a player issue.  But thats just from my experience.

Yeah, someone should mod this to the threads that StarsBraves should go back and read. There are at least 50 other threads where several people have argued this to death, so I'll leave it at this: oscar was not the best available coach, he was a failure at a job that was easier than this one.

Ohio St, Creighton, NC St and SDSt (# 11, 12, 14,15) all lost. We move ahead of these 4
#9 Minnesota lost at home but to Michigan
#18 Mich St beat #11 Ohio St, but they were almost 250 points behind us, so i dont think they leapfrog us

So i think we will be 11 or 12.  Probably 12

SO BACK ON TOPIC K?

How highly ranked do you think we could be tomorrow? 6 of the 8 teams ahead of us lost, and MSU is the only team that could jump us. I'd be pumped if we got to 12 in the AP.

 :bball:

"poll frauds" - Joe Lunardi

Lundardi has Creighton above us.  Their best and only decent win is Wisconsin.  He doesn't know WTF he is talking about.

Maybe, but its not like we have a bad loss yet either. ISU was disappointing, but (at this point in time) it wasn't a bad loss. We need more good wins, but right now we are in really good shape and deserving of Top 25.

Iowa State is always going to be viewed as a small timey nobody by voters.  Losing to them hurts because they are a mid-major like program

Of course they are, that's why they are fun (when your team is good enough to be in them).

I mean its hard to argue Miami shouldn't be ranked where they are considering their last 7 games and the fact they have a 2 game lead in the ACC.

Sure, they should be ranked, but c'mon. They're ranked because they slaughtered Duke at home, not because they have a 2 game lead in a garbage ACC. Everyone and their mother knows they are going to choke that lead away as soon as they play some tough road games.

that is hilariously bad bilas.

KSU has 4 losses, is alone at 2nd place in the Big 12, beat your #2 and #16, lost to your #3, #4, and #7, & RPI #40, but nope gotta make room for:

a 5-loss Marquette team that lost to Green Bay earlier this season and just got blown out by 19 points at Louisville

an Oregon team that previously lost to UTEP and just lost TWICE last week to unranked teams with a combined 16 losses

a 6-loss NC State team that just lost TWICE last week

a 5-loss UNLV team that just lost to Boise State, and all 5 of their losses are to unranked teams

a 4-loss Butler teams whose four losses are to Xavier, Illinois, La Salle, and (this week) SLU

and best of all

an 8-loss Indiana State team that just lost to Drake, and includes losses to Morehead State, San Diego State, Southern Illinois, and Illinois State

Yes.  I am saying that you could probably find 25 teams with more/better road wins than the one we just had, that also don't have horrendous home losses.

How about K-State at No. 13??? Only the 2nd time K-State has been Top 15 in February since after Mitch Richmond's senior season in 1987-88.

D. Scott Fritchen [email protected]
Prior to Monday, K-State was ranked No. 14 to start Feb. 1988 and at No. 10 to start Feb. 2010. So it's the 2nd time in the last 24 years.

No, I wasn't referring to a bunch of bad losses for us.  The obvious teams that a hypothetical voter might place ahead of us based on a valuing road wins strongly would be Wisconsin and OSU.

We have a weird non-con resume.  We're out of the top 25 in 11 of 25 computer rankings compiled here (http://www.masseyratings.com/cb/compare.htm).  Some of those are wackier than others, but whatever, it doesn't seem completely out of this world for someone to vote us at 26-30.

The problem with this is K-State has a much better non con resume than most teams 5-25. At this point in the season that would be an insane overreach and just a lame ass excuse for not ranking a team. You could take any individual metric and use just that to show a team isn't top 25 worthy. I would love to hear Eamon's explanation, there simply aren't anywhere close to 25 teams in America with a better profile.

Rankings are pretty weird. Obviously Butler is good enough to beat anyone, but they also lose games to crappy teams on the reg. We have a great win, but 1-4 against top 10 teams makes us pretty consistent about losing to good teams, and @ISU is by no means a bad loss. So we are a lot better at being consistent. How do determine who is better between us a Butler?

Does anyone have a favorite "dark ages" season?  I'm pretty fond of 97-98 when we started 9-0 and then gave up 125 at UA (followed by scoring 111 against Mizzou).  95-96 was fun too - we squeaked into the tourney and then lost by 21 because half the roster had the flu.

Conference Champs in 50,51, 56, 58, 59, 60, 61, 63, 64, 68, 70, 72, 73, 77

High Rank
50 - 10
51 - 3
56 - 17* only rank in second to last poll
58 - 1
59 - 1
60 - 15
61 - 4
63 - NR
64 - NR
68 - NR
70 - 16
72 - NR
73 - 9* spent most of year in 15-18 range, E8
77 - 16* only ranking in final poll

How the hell do you win the conference championship and not get ranked?

Maybe we can set up some kind of deal with South Caronlina where we swap coaches every four or five years.  Frank can evaluate talent and give his teams the Residue of Toughness that Fran is always talking about.  And then when the players and administrators get tired of his schtick we swap Weber in to coach em up until we're all soft and mushy again.  Rinse and repeat.  Win-win-win-win.

Did You Know: This is the 200th week overall KSU has been ranked in the AP Poll.  That's good for 40th in the nation, between Georgia Tech and Stanford.

meanwhile, what a goddam idiot:

It was always going to take some time there, but that Florida loss was rough ridin' awful.

The double digit loss to Mark Fox at home would have been worse for me.

lol, what an idiot

He stuck up for us early in the season until we got beaten by Michigan and Gonzaga. He's probably just butthurt we didn't play well when he wanted us to.

Ku loses to two unranked teams in a wk, three loses in a row, and they drop like 8 spots?  Wtf?

Any other team would be out.

You have to consider how many other top 25 teams lost in the last week as well.  Teams were getting beat all over the place.  I did actually think they would be lower though.

It was one of the craziest weeks ever in Top 25 basketball.

14 AP Top 25 teams lost at least once last week. 8 losses for 6 Top 10 teams. 6 lost on Saturday, including 2 in the Top 5.

I heard somewhere this weekend that those 14 losses were the most in a week by Top 25 teams since 1949.

If I am looking at his rankings correctly, KSU is 11th based on conference play alone, up from 22 for the whole season.  I would love this more if we weren't behind CSU at 10 and Wisky at 5 in the conference only ranking.

Our schedule would be much better had we scheduled better midmajors. The good teams we have played are fine, but there is no reason at all to ever schedule some of the crappy teams we have played.

Bilas:

18. Kansas State Wildcats (Previous ranking: 19)

The Wildcats were blown out by Kansas in Lawrence, then turned around and blew out Baylor in Manhattan. Kansas State is solid but not spectacular, and doesn't shoot the ball well consistently. In addition, in order to win, Kansas State must keep opponents off of the offensive glass. That is a team thing, and all five players on the floor have to box out and rebound.

The thing that the Wildcats have done best in league play is take care of the ball: Kansas State has turned it over only 10 times per game in Big 12 play, and leads the league in turnover margin. Kansas State assists on 63 percent of its field goals, best in the Big 12.

Pretty much ruins his entire rankings because he clearly has paid no attention to K-State basketball.

they have shot better in conference, but they are shooting as a team around 43.5% percent which is good for middle of the road among all division one schools.  That is not really setting the world on fire.

they have shot better in conference, but they are shooting as a team around 43.5% percent which is good for middle of the road among all division one schools.  That is not really setting the world on fire.

Check out K-State's eFG%, 2PT%, and 3PT% over K-State's 13 league games and get back to me.

If you don't know what eFG% is, I can't help you.

disappointing Luke Winn isn't a fan of the cats.

I know, still #20.

I would love to see Luke throw up a chart highlight oscar's transition from Frank's JYCs to our new 3PT shooting wizards.

Bilas:

The men towards the beginning of the season were up to #2 in the country, but I guess success got to their heads because they dropped a few after that and are now unranked.  The men are 16-6 which is an improvement over the past years. There was talk Chipman had bene losing it in recent years because his teams had not been having the same level of success as early in the 00's, but he seems to have it back on track now.

The women are in the top 5 in the country and once again having a fantastic season.  19-3 overall and number 1 in the MIAA. This really is not a surprise as the women's team has been putting up these type of seasons since I started school there in 2005.

I can't say I have seen the teams play in person this year, but do read up on the games from the news paper articles and various other press releases.

As for KSU eFG%, I took advice and looked up their performance in conference games.

Over the entire season KSU is shooting 49.4% which ranks as 145th in the country.  Like I said middle of the road. However, in conference play that Cats have bee non fire and are at 52.3% which is good for 56th nationally.  That is quite the impressive improvement.  I don't type this pretending to know how many KSU games that Mr. Bilas has watched, as I have no way of knowing this information. I will say that the stats show either the team was still trying to grasp the new offense at the beginning of the season and have now figured that out, or they are on an incredible hot streak right now and will regress back towards their overall season performance.  I tend to think the former better describes the situation than the latter.  Will they continue to shoot as well as they have thus far in conference I have no idea, but I do think they will cool off at least a little bit.  I have not broken it down by player to see who has contributed to this improvement over the season, but I imagine Spradling's ridiculous shooting for most of the conference play is a very large factor.

You think after 2/3 of conference play the stats aren't indicative of our well our team can shoot? And without looking it up, I think Sprads went 0-11 during a 3 game span in conference play. So his shooting percentage has already taken that into account, and it's still pretty good.

I was mostly referencing the "they are on an incredible hot streak right now and will regress back towards their overall season performance" and "I do think they will cool off at least a little bit" parts. We've been very consistent since conference play started, and we have TCU, Texas and Tech games coming up. Don't know why you are suggesting that we will cool off.

Fair point to mention my thought that KSU would cool off a little bit.  I don't really have any evidence to support that.  It is just my opinion based on a belief that Spradling will not continue to shoot this well and that Shane will not shoot as well as he has for the rest of the year.

FTR Sprads is 19-48 from 3 in Big 12 play.  Good for 39.5%, or, in other terms, the exact average that we have shot as a team in conference play (as _Fan mentioned recently.) He was 21-60 out of conference, good for 35%.

Shane is  26-58 (44.8%) in conference and was 10-22 (45.5%) out of conference.

So Sprads' "ridiculous" improvement is 4.5% and while Shane has greatly increased his output, his shooting percentage is actually down slightly.

16. Kansas State Wildcats (Previous ranking: 18)

The Wildcats have won seven of eight games, and surprisingly, they have a more efficient offense than defense. Kansas State still has issues shooting the ball consistently, and does not get to the free throw line enough, but the Wildcats get second shots. On the defensive end, Kansas State's first-shot defense is pretty good, but there are too many second chances available to opponents who go to the glass. After two games in which Rodney McGruder averaged only 10 points on 35 percent shooting, McGruder put 20 on Texas, including 7-of-13 from the floor, to go along with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Kansas State still has road games at Baylor and Oklahoma State.

We could really make a move this week if we take care of business

9 Michigan State (@Michigan)
10 Louisville (@Syracuse)
11 Arizona (@USC, @UCLA)
12 Syracuse (@Marquette, vs Louisville)

Duke plays at Virginia, and then against Miami but we probably wouldn't pass either of those teams. Maybe if Duke lost both. But anyways it's a long week. I'm just really pumped to see how the rest of the season plays out.

That said, we have been playing small all yr so next yr we just plug nino in at 4, shane at 3, and we will have a legitimate starting 5.  If foster can beat out will, all the better.

Quote from: Bilas
15. Kansas State Wildcats (Previous ranking: 16)

The Wildcats are in the mix for a share of the Big 12 title, even though Kansas beat them twice. oscar Weber has done a remarkable job with this team. Kansas State showed a lot of toughness to execute under stress at Baylor and for Rodney McGruder to hit the game-winner with a second left in regulation.

Kansas State is not a great defensive team, but a good one, and this offense has continued to improve throughout the season. Right now, Kansas State is one of the 25 most efficient offenses in the country, and a large part of that comes from activity on the offensive glass, as the Wildcats are 10th in the country in offensive rebounding percentage, which means easier second shots. Kansas State is not quite as good on the opposite backboard, giving up too many second opportunities.

McGruder has had a great season, and is a clear choice for first team All-Big 12. Kansas State has won nine of 10 since losing back-to-back games to Kansas and Iowa State, and the Wildcats are ranked No. 33 in the BPI, No. 31 in KemPom.com, and No. 21 in the Sagarin ratings. The Bilastrator has Kansas State more in line with Sagarin, which makes Sagarin correct.

several reasons

without spending too much time getting into this topic abolishing the NCAA and paying players would make things much worse and schools like Duke would be better served by shutting football down using this model.

Yeah, I remember the back to back titles, but Floyd's best teams weren't top 10 good. And Johnny Orr was like their favoritest basketball coach of all time, and his conference record wasn't that good.  (just looked it up, 79-117.  Very Ioway.)

All time wins and time in the top 10 are irrelevant when discussing program history? I think you are confusing this with KU fans dismissing current success because of what wasn't accomplished 50 years ago. I think if we were discussing historical accomplishments of our football program we couldn't run from our history.

KSU finally made Winn's rankings! :D   up 7 spots(http://goEMAW.com/forum/Themes/chemical_light/images/post/exclamation.gif) to 13. However we didn't get any fancy charts. :frown:

This guy practically has us as a 5 seed and OSU as a 3 seed.

#15 in Winn's rankings.

Quote
Kansas State Wildcats (25-6)
oscar Weber is having a sensational debut season at K-State, having led the Wildcats to a share of the Big 12 title (with a 14-4 league record) and what could very well be a No. 4 seed in the NCAAs. He's done quite well for himself after being fired from Illinois.

But here's a surprising fact: Weber's penultimate Illini team, which did not really get anyone excited, going 19-13 overall (9-9 in the Big Ten) while earning a No. 9 seed in the NCAAs, had a much better efficiency rating than his current K-State club.

The 2010-11 Illini ranked 18th in kenpom, while this year's Wildcats are 35th. Weber was perceived to be flailing in those final Champaign years, when in actuality, he had a decent team; now, he's perceived to be thriving with a less-efficient product. Life is better for him away from the Big Ten.

Love when numbers guys blindly abide by said numbers despite obvious flaws and/or irregularities. If Winn doesn't like oscar's system or our personnel, its obvious he doesn't, he should just say so and not use kenpom as a crutch. Pomeroy has admitted that his rankings can have some outliers.

better-ish. I mean when I look at the list, I'm not sure how many teams we would be favored against on a neutral floor. Maybe 5-6? And mostly because they're mid-majors?

Just shows that the polls are 100% meaningless.  Ranked above Marquette the entire season and they end up a higher seed than us.  At least in football the polls are added to the BCS rankings.  What is the point of even having bball polls at this point, if the committee goes more off of the RPI?  Should the polls be part of the RPI rankings?

Polls in basketball are meaningless which is fine and what they should be.  You can use them as a general indicator or whatever, but so many ballots are incredibly dumb it would be stupid to let them affect seeding.

Point is its clear Luke doesn't like something about this team, also equally clear that he can't articulate what that is so he is using a metric as a crutch.

Football fans that visit the basketball board for three weeks don't count. I mean you're expecting someone who doesn't think football polls are a joke to understand the RPI.

Sometimes it's hard to tell what is meant by being ranked higher/lower/sub.

Is higher than 25th good or bad?
Is sub 100 good or bad?
Is lower than 50 good or bad?

Not always clear which way you're going. It can be read both ways.

I only listen to Gary Parrish because his podcast is amazing and usually only half of it is about basketball and the other half is about drunk coaches and media.

Poor comparo, imo.

We were waaaaay more dogshitty then than OSU is now and Huggs was waaaaay more of an established coach then than Brad is now(he had more leverage to negotiate a favorable contract).

Well yeah, I get it, but there's been similar teams in the past (ex. Last Year South Carolina team) which were still projected and had played no one. I'm guessing they thought those teams would continue to do well in the conference, but they're assuming we won't?

i don't have time to sys/kenpom it up but last year's usc schedule wasn't comparable to ours this year (this is a hypothesis)
by the time they reached their first loss they had beaten clemson, vandy, tulsa, memphis, st johns, auburn.  they're low tier p5 but better than anything we've beaten.

Its about a resume and not entire profile, I don't think playing bad teams hurt you that much. Big 12 will offer more opportunities for quality wins, USCjr just didn't have enough chances to add quality wins to their resume.

south carolina's schedule last year was a joke because of their conference slate more so than their noncon.  their noncon wasn't particularly challenging, but it was only when combined with their ridiculously easy conference schedule that it turned into a shitshow.

only one voter has ranked us all season, and that man is Doug "Doughboy" Doughty, of the Roanoke Times in Roanoke, VA.  He had us at 22 last week and dropped us to 25 this week.

Moving ahead of the Cats in Doughboy's poll were Arizona, Oregon and Butler.

This is the most votes we've received since November 17, 2014.

In 12-13 we showed started at #25 on 12/24 and stayed the rest of the season, finishing at #12.

Cats are just outside the top 25 this week, coming in with the 26th most votes at 29 points, 18 points behind 25th ranked florida.

Doug DUD Doughty was the only one who voted for the Cats last week at 25th.  This week, one would expect K-State to move up his ballot, but alas, Doug continued to defy rationality by not voting for the cats at all this week.  I'm considering penning a letter to the Roanoke Times to see if I can get any clarity on this matter.

Meanwhile, Dave Borges of the New Haven Register ranked the Cats at 21!

Looks like some people are coming around and getting over the "week OOC schedule" point and seeing that we've actually got some decent Big 12 wins even without beating the top 3.

i have to hand it to oscar. one of my biggest anti-oscar talking points before this season was our complete shittiness on the road. 4-3 on the road is pretty good. the weird thing is it never feels like an impressive win (opposing team isn't that good, weak home crowd, etc) but other teams keep losing those same games so :dunno:
Title: Re: Rankings thread, yeah I said it!

Reminds me a little of the Conference Championship team.  With the exception of LaSalle, that team consistently won just about every game they were favored in and lost the ones you would expect to.  This team isn't as good, but has that level of consistency (except Tulsa).  Granted, they still have perhaps their three toughest games to come against that bottom 6.

It's possible that we end up with only 1 or 2 wins against tournament teams.  That seems light.  Granted, you don't have to be good to get in, just better than the rest of the bubble.

This is a fair point. I've gotten caught up in the new Tier win system, but there are many Tier 2 wins that aren't over tournament teams.

Yeah, it's not a coincidence that our mol against the top three teams is huge. There's no magic about those teams except that they're way better than the teams below us in the standings. No real opportunity for us to prove that we're better than good not great teams, hopefully that doesn't bite us on selection Sunday.

It's far more likely we end up with 6 than 1. We also will only have 1 loss to a non tourney team, whatever that is worth.

TCU (2) Baylor (2),  if we sweep OU and UT they won’t make the tourney.   I guess if we lose to OU and UT and then it could be TCU (2) Baylor (2) UT (1) OU (1)
