get a minivan

Minivans are fun to drive. I never really understood the negative stigma.

pro tip - it's the kids

Yeah, I don't have kids, but I always laugh when people with 4 kids go out and buy and excursion so they don't have to drive a *gasp* minivan.

My first two cars were standards.  Liked them at the time.  Will never go back.  I want to be as disassociated from the driving experience as possible.

I'm this way too.  It didn't really bother me ever at the time but as soon as I got an auto I was like GMAFB clutch and shifter.

Depends on what the car is as to  whether or not to get a standard or automatic.

I prefer driving a stick.  I had to stop buying them because my wife is incapable of learning how to drive one.
This sounds like an exact reason to want to drive a stick.

I loved my manual (stick) honda CRX that I drove in college.  Fun little car to drive.  But hated driving the farm truck with the manual transmission.

Manual's are not that hard to learn how to drive.  My wife bought a manual without knowing how to drive it, and I taught her within a couple weeks.  I like them better, but it isn't some sort of point of pride or gold star I give myself.  Also, consideing how I drive, I doubt I save on gas milage which is what a car salesman might use in his talking points.

The only substantive advantage is if the transmission goes on the auto it will probably more expensive to fix than on a standard.

I used to like manual because it limited the ability of other people to drive my car.

when I had a stick, I read something about "hyper-mileage" dudes who can get like 80 mpg from an off-the-shelf Civic or something. After reading all the crap they did, I would shut off the engine and coast down hills all the time, then use the transmission to start the engine back up at the bottom of the hill. Lots of fun.

My folks rented a Dodge/Chrysler minivan a couple months ago.  My dad and I were both surprised with how much frickin' room they have and how many nice options they have.

Minivans are great if you like disgusting cesspools of dried juice on the armrests and half-full pop cans in the cupholders and year-old happy meal cheesburgers on the floor. Because that's what every backseat of every minivan I've ever been in looks like.

Our Pathfinder is getting old and uncomfortable for long rides. Need AWD/4WD. Automatic. Big enough for car seat and storage in back. 18-25K. Thoughts  on new vs slightly used vs certified preowned? Thoughts on what model to get? Thinking certified preowned Forester or Rav4. Not sure if CPO is worth it or not, though.

See if you can find a 2011 or newer Jeep Grand Cherokee for that. Love my 2012 and they made all the improvements the 2011 model year.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.
