I am a mixture of a several of those categories as well.  I haven't ridden much this year, I need to get back into it.  I am going lug my mountain bike up to Northern Minnesota next week and hit some trails and ride some old dirt backroads that go by loads of little lakes and ponds and crap.

I wanted a decent quality bike and did not want to pay much for it. So, I found this 15-20 year old "Nishiki" on craigslist. Read online that the frame is the same as a Giant frame. Replaced tires, a gear shifter, and cleaned it up. Total cost around $120. Now, I ride it about once a year.

I’m thinking about getting a new bike. What’s good?

Yes

hardly encountered any traffic at all really. maybe highway 9 to parkville, just because it's a 2 lane highway with a tiny shoulder, and you're kind of relying on drivers to not hit you from behind. but that's a very common bike route so i think drivers are used to it. overall this ride was 0/7 scariness.

let's fire this thread back up, it's cycling season!

- i'm approaching 1000 miles since i got my first real bike last summer. this year i might try for 2k, who knows??
- i put some specialized armadillo elites on my road bike late last year and have not gotten a single flat in probably ~500 miles. strong recommend!
- really getting swept up in the gravel bike deal. i want to do some overnights. i'm weighing the raleigh tamland, jamis renegade, and maybe a fuji jari. there is also a used trek crossrip that is tempting.  anybody have any protips (aluminum vs steel, cheap but good bags, does mech vs hydro brakes really matter)?

This intrigues me too.  I have been eyeing that Katy Trail.  I have an old man Cannondale hybrid, which basically has tires similar to a gravel bike.  I might take it on some longer stuff.

3,712 ft??

that is total ft of climbing, not the net difference in elevation

I barely like driving my car for 100 miles so this is a pretty big achievement.

7.5 hours is a long time to sit on a bicycle seat.

I have no idea why anybody would ever want to ride 100 miles on a bike that isn’t participating in the tour

I've done 50+ a few times. Break it up with a fuel bar break every couple hours. No big deal if you've been in the saddle for a while. Great way to enjoy the outdoors.
