Reviews for Dark Tower are awful....
no surprise....I don't know how you combine 7 books into 95 minutes - and on top of it introduce new storylines.
Bigger question is how that decision was made. I don't understand the "hard to adapt" argument. The plot isn't that complicated if you give it the time and commitment it deserves. LOTR didn't try to mash the whole trilogy into one 90 minute movie and those movies were wildly successful.
There was enough action and intrigue in The Gunslinger to make an excellent 90 minute movie. Then you put books 2 and 3 together into the next movie, do book 4 (young Roland's adventures) as a concurrent TV special, and finish with books 5-7 as the final movie. The books could have easily and excellently been adapted to this structure.
Instead we get something that's so loosely adapted from the books that it is actually considered a sequel to the books. So you arrive at that perfect hell for adaptations of beloved novels - the fans hate it and the general audience is not impressed after watching a story that was put through the meat grinder in an effort to satisfy their tastes.
I'll go see it anyway. My expectations are so low at this point that I may enjoy it.
