Pick-Up Soccer thread
« on: July 23, 2014, 10:59:14 AM »
I am officially making my come back.

Buying new cleats today at Dick's.  Already have a pretty healthy supply of slightly too tight soccer jerseys from my prolific intramural and MPRD adult league career.  I still know/recognize a few guys that still play and I will be updating this thread regularly with funny anecdotes, hotly debated questions about proper etiquette and some of the inevitable challenges that will accompany a completely out of shape father of two playing pick-up soccer.

Probably going with these to minimize "look at this fat idiot with new cleats"

show the cleats that would maximize that so I know which ones to buy when I take up this sport

Now.  Where should I play?  In my hey-day I would've been a right sided forward making runs in behind defense and yelling for people to put it over the top for me to run on to and pressing and pestering the defenders in to making bad passes out of the back.  A marauding Tevez or Robbie Keane type.

Later I mostly just turned in to more of a Gattuso type playing a defensive winger or right back and mostly just fouling people hard and talking crap.

Now I definitely want to stay out of the center of midfield so that I'm not constantly running or turning the ball over.  So I think I will stick to half heartedly marking one of the other teams better players if they are playing on the wing for awhile and see how that goes.

Honestly, take your pic because most of the current designs by Nike and adidas are pretty redic.

i saw some kids playing a pick up game at the middle school by my house last monday. i went over and reffed for about half an hour. they didnt really flop and called a lot of their own fouls so it was an easy gig. i wore my nike air max kicks.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

I think pickup soccer would be fun, but then I see all those guys get their feet stepped on and stuff and am worried I would get hurt and not be able to play hoops any more.

There are usually 1-2 psychos per game.  But almost no people playing pick-up soccer are wearing metal cleats so it isn't a big deal.  I never wear shin guards and hardly ever wear tall socks.

yikes!

I also worry about doing weird/unexpected things with my legs and pulling something.

It is not a big deal.  I mean your excuses are somewhat valid, but 99% of the time people pull out of tackles (standing) I mean it is like worrying about having to take a bunch of charges in a pick-up basketball game.  It just very rarely happens.

Are we talking about a legit 6 on 6 or so pickup game or one of those old stadium pick up games where there are 45 people just chasing the ball wherever it goes?

Not the 6v6 league.  Probably not 45 people.  It is at Anneberg, but I've never played with these guys.  I think/hope they skew a bit older than the Old Stadium crowd.

I found one of my old cleats and the other one is almost certainly in my Saturn that I abandoned.

I barely remember playing against you in the league because I was drunk usually.  I am under the assumption that you will be sober and are better than me regardless, but my strategy of playing D and then making the occasional run when I had a pretty clear path hid a bunch of my deficiencies pretty well.

Yes.  This is my strategy.

Other goals:

1. play a 1-2 with someone
2. score a goal (unlikely)
3. 3 steals
4. two evasions of a defender
5. No puking

Most of the time I will be playing on a hard field or artificial turf.  6v6 season is in the summer in late June through July.  Old Stadium pick up games.  Maaaaaybe I will play in the fall, but doubt it.

There are usually no direct free kicks or penalties.  I haven't played with this group though so there is a chance they might be weirdos that would do that.

All reasons for molded or turf shoes.  These things will kill your feet.
