I saw book of mormon this weekend and I was honestly surprised it was still on Broadway given the way it portrays Uganda/Ugandans/Africans

What about the way it portrays Mormons?

I knew that was coming and it honestly wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and according to my ex-Mormon wife a lot of it was spot on. But I was surprised I hadn't heard any commentary about it also being pretty racist.

I assume that’s mostly just because over the top stereotypes are kind of their schtick. It’s definitely racist compared to modern musicals but completely typical for a South Park episode.

We did the touring Lion King yesterday. The kids loved it. This Aladdin show is coming Tulsa in the Fall & we’ll go to it too.

I didn't see this at all. I was hesitant to see it initially because, although I have some issues with this get down, I didn't want to see two hours of anyone's religion being mocked and was happy to see it wasn't that. I didn't have an issue with how the Africans were portrayed. They weren't meant to depict all Africans, just those who would be visited my missionaries.

well, you also saw it like 7 years ago. I also just read "Africa is not a Country" based on kat kid's recommendation and it did a good job highlighting a lot of the racist tropes about Africa and Book of Mormon basically ticked all the boxes.

also I caught some of the Tony Awards Sunday night and that goddam Kimberly Akimbo performance was one of the most cringey/bad things I've ever witnessed. Holy crap and it won Best Musical

I've been hitting some shows happening with KC Fringe Fest.  I saw Tuneabomber last night which is a musical based on an alternate Unabomber who wanted to be a performer.  It was a lot of fun.  It probably has a few more shows over the next couple of days if KC folks were interested.  I saw a couple of non-musical shows with Fringe that were both pretty meh.

Beetlejuice: What a pleasant surprise this musical was for me. Easily in the top 5 musicals I've seen. Just enough emotion to keep the story interesting, but otherwise a combination of offbeat comedy and catchy music with pretty good choreography at points.
