Title: Construction Update Master Thread
Post by: j-von on July 18, 2012, 05:05:44 PM
The site is almost done so I decided that instead of posting in a bunch of threads I'd just consolidate it all here. If you like talking about cool new crap in Manhattan, this thread is for you.

To get updates through facebook or twitter, follow these accounts:

https://twitter.com/ksunewscom
https://facebook.com/ksunewscom

You can also subscribe to the rss feed at the site here (http://www.ksunews.com). Just click on the rss icon.

Here are the first two updates:

Basketball Training Facility (http://www.ksunews.com/training-facility-update-july-17th/)
Football Stadium (http://www.ksunews.com/stadium-update-july-17th/)

If you see anything wrong with the site let me know.

How will I get to my seat?

I'm still a little bit confused about what it's going to be like when the season starts.  It looks like most of the steel will be up on each side of the current press box and then people will just walk under it to get to their seats.  It will be really interesting to see where they're at in a month because the rendering seems optimistic.  Will be pretty amazing if they really have that much steel up though. I'm guessing someone can correct me on this.

Thanks. I know it would drive me crazy if I lived out of town and didn't really get to see everything go up.

steel goes up very quickly.

the only thing that could make it *kinda* slow would be if they poured each deck before setting the next level.  you can set all the steel though and come back to pour the decks, just makes it more labor intensive for the concrete guys.

Thanks, I was hoping we could get people that know what they're talking about to help out since I'm no construction expert.  Is it pretty common to have a huge steel framework up during a season when doing one of these?

I mentioned in the post about the BTF that I was surprised how far behind they still are and how unfinished the inside is.  I'd be interested to hear from someone with building experience if it's as far off as it looks.

I was thinking about watermarking goEMAW on the pictures as well but I don't want to have to redo it when a super rebellious rebel board starts.  I'll definitely put some links up though.

Some nighttime pictures of the Jardine apartments.  It was a nice place to bring some food and hang out even though non-residents aren't supposed to use the overlook/pond/etc.

Really good photographer.

Thanks, I'm using a beginner DSLR Nikon D3100 with their crappy kit 18-55 lens.  I'm no great photographer, I've just done a lot of work in Lightroom and Photoshop so I'm able to clean them up in post to make them look like what a good photographer would be able to do without software.  I do shoot on full manual though so you have to understand how everything works together.

For these shots I had to leave the shutter open a long time to get that amount of light into the lens (5-6 seconds on some).  More expensive lenses can get to lower apertures which don't need as much time which is why some people refer to nicer lenses as "faster glass".  I do have a nice 50mm 1.8 lens but it really doesn't work well for these wide open shots.  I actually wanted to leave the shutter open longer in this case to catch the motion of the globe and fountain so it worked out pretty well.

just crank the 50mm 1.8 up to 2.8 and you should get the low light sharpness you're looking for

Since the d3100 isn't full frame, the 50mm acts more like a 75mm which is tough when trying to document a large area.  I got the 50mm because it supposedly has the best bokeh and that's what I was looking for, but I really wish I would have gotten the 35mm.  I think that will be my next purchase and then hopefully a nice 70-200 2.8.  I'll keep the 50mm for artsy closeups.  Here's a few testing out the sharpness and bokeh of 1.8 on the 50mm unedited.

you definitely want to go full frame.  i shoot with a 24-70 2.8 L series lens and love it.  it's really fast.  you might also consider the 24mm 1.4

It takes a while to do the site work. Drilling piers, setting foundations and such. The steel will go up in no time at all. It's not un common for steel to be up during the season. It hurts in blocking some revenue making stuff like concessions, but it's a cool thing to see and generates a "buzz" so it's kind of offset.

PS. Awesome site for us out of towners.

La Hacienda would be La Haciendone if it wasn't for goEMAW.  Show them your website with the goEMAW affiliation at the bottom and they'll give you the run of the house.

Sunset Zoo just built a giant new Rotunda Welcome Center.  Very nice for the size of the zoo.  Heard they have some pretty kick-ass technology in there too.

great, could you take some pics of campus, especially the newer buildings like the leadership studies building, or the other nice areas of campus (Hale, old stadium/alumni center, union, Anderson.  Also, maybe some pics of Colbert and the new clubhouse, just spit-ballin here.

Also the discovery center area?

The discovery center area + the new hotel are probably next on my list to do.  Campus will be split up into parts but I'm sure but that will be coming.  Expect more of this type of stuff once it cools down a little bit.

I love the sunset zoo but I didn't know about their welcome center so I definitely want to get up there.

I'm overwhelmed with beautiful things to shoot in Manhattan.  With the rate of construction here I may have to hire on a few more photographers to keep pace.

while you're out taking pics of new stuff in and around town, would you also take pictures of any new bathrooms you see as well as take notes on any cursory information about the bathrooms like how many stalls and thickness of toilets paper, type of hand soap, etc. no real reason other than i think people would enjoy it. keep up the good work!

Ya, but I was trying to get in and out of there pretty quick so the only time I looked at the field was when I took that picture.  All I can say is that the camera seems to do a good job of keeping colors true to life.

the only reason I know that there is such a thing as a sun bear is that they toss cantaloupes to them in the omaha zoo from way up above the tree line in their cage and when it's getting close to cantaloupe time they crawl up to the top of their trees to try to catch the cantaloupes.  pretty great.  maybe I would choose sun bear now that you mention it.

did i ever tell you that when i went to the omaha zoo that one of the monkeys was chewing gum. he'd chew on it and then grab an end and stretch it out really long with the other end still in his mouth and then he'd throw it all back in and chew some more. it was great. i mean, when monkeys do things like they people, like wear clothes or chew gum or smoke or whatever it always makes me laugh.

As someone who doesn't know much about Omaha, I'm always wondering how they get such nice stuff.  Is it Buffett, Nebraska Furniture Mart, some other industry I don't know about?  Seems like a pretty cool place for not being in a cool place.

I am going to Omaha with the fam tomorrow.  Gonna hit the zoo.  Can't wait to see sun bears eating melon.

Also, J-Von, break into the BTF and get some inside pics.  TIA.

I thought about it last time I was up there.  I'm pretty good about going places I know I shouldn't but walking through the BTF would be a little strange flying solo.  If anybody wants to be my spotter for that mission let me know.

Next time I'm up to the football stadium I'm gonna try to get up to the east side upper deck and get some new shots from that direction. Hopefully that will give some more context to the pictures since it's been hard to get any wide angle shots.

It's the same grass color but every 5 yards the knap changes direction

Look at grass guy over here.

I went to go play tennis at the rec complex today but found it was all ripped up which reminded me that I needed update this thread on that project.  These renderings are a little old and I didn't take these interior pics but I thought it was worth posting.

bigDcat and I play at city park. There are only 3 courts there, but they're in ok shape and have lights. A few other apartment complex's around town have their own court or two as well.

I went and scouted the cico courts today and 2 out of the 3 looked like they are in pretty shitty condition.  City park is alright except it always seems to be full, and probably more so now that the rec courts are gone.  City park is definitely hood and a little rapey at night, I used to live on the corner of fremont and 14th st. in college.

I need someone to point me towards an apartment complex that has a rarely used, but totally amazing court.  I routinely use an apartment complex pool which has worked out quite nicely for me.

Should be at the stadium tomorrow.  I just found out my cousin is working in the crane so maybe I'll be able to get an insiders tour. I completely forgot he worked for a crane company.

As for the other projects I will get to them, but I really need to get my nursery construction done which is taking up all my free time.  I'm finding out that doing custom wainscoting with no prior knowledge of how to do it is harder than it seems  :frown:

Speaking of nursery construction,  I figured I'd post a picture of the basketball goal that's in there.  The powercat is cut into the metal bracket in the back which gives it a cool look through the glass backboard.  Much better than having the logo on the backboard.  This room was my dedicated mini b-ball room for about 6 months before we got pregnant with a boy so I had to give it up.  Searching for the right outdoor goal now.

This picture wasn't really meant to be of the goal so if anybody wants a better version I can take one.  You can get it at Goalsetter.com.  Also the painting is pre-wainscoting and maybe I'll update that once it's all finished since this project does technically fit under Manhattan construction.

I dunk like crazy on that thing.  It has 10 lag bolts holding it up and I haven't heard it make a sound.  It's really heavy and a pain to put up so I'm glad we're having a boy so I don't have to take it down.

wainscoting should either be 1/3 or 2/3 the height of the wall. There is 10 foot ceilings in there and I made it a few inches short of 2/3. It's board and batten and will pretty much look like this

dunno where you got that advice, there is no "rule" for wainscoting.  for my taste, that's way to high for a bedroom, but it's your house.   just don't eff up and end up with an abortion of a light switch like that dumbass did.

I was just going by what I found when researching design tips.  Basically kept finding this written different ways..

Quote
Rule of Thirds
Moser's 1/3 to 2/3 rule of thumb reinforces the Rule of Thirds used in art and photography. Essentially, something is more visually interesting if the eye is attracted to either side, or above or below, the center; having the subject perfectly centralized appears boring. Having wainscoting height based on thirds better addresses walls of any height. In addition, wainscoting placed halfway up the wall makes the wall, if not the entire room, feel as if it is cut in half.

Meh, not my best day out there.  I tried the east side and luckily there was a gate open.  My wide shots turned out ok, but getting a better angle on the construction didn't exactly work out like I'd planned.

Next week I'll be back to the west side.

http://www.ksunews.com/football-stadium-update-august-7th/

I was planning to take some new shots of the b-ball facility but the only noticeable change was the front doors had been installed.  I'd heard the whole thing had been sealed up and the windows were all in, but I noticed there were still some that haven't been installed.  The football crew is totally punking those losers.

No offense taken, you guys may very well be right.  I've really never seen it done here, but it's done a lot near the coasts and since we're going for a nautical theme I felt like it would fit. Until I get the wood painted I really won't know if I like it.  If you search board and batten waincoting on google images you'll see a lot of them at 2/3 and some that go all the way to the ceiling.  We chose the blue paint from this picture and it would have made the room way too dark if it was more than 1/3 of the wall.

thanks dlew.  steve dave mocked it last week when he was in town.  why?  who knows.  anywho, i love that damn crane with every fiber of my being.  if you ever want more pics of it, just post here and request them.  there's a similar crane on the same site that i didn't even take a picture of.  LOL, just sitting there doing what cranes do and i didn't even bother to take a picture of it.  some days i think i need to walk back over to the construction site and snap a few photos of the 2nd crane.  and i'll be perfectly honest with everyone here.  if anyone wants to see the other crane i will take a photo of it and upload it to this site.

it's hard to tell from angles and everything but that blue crane that clams posted looks about 1/3 the size of the bsfs cranes. nice looking crane though don't get me wrong.

which would put it squarely in the lead b/w it and the bsfs cranes which don't go an inch past 175 ft tall.

Met a guy in Montana two years ago.  Was living in his truck driving around the state inspecting cranes.  Had a cow herding dog with him.  Said dog would sleep in the back (on the flatbed) year round.  He was surprised it didn't die during the winter.

No matter where I am working in MHK, my last week, I always take a route that will drive me past the cranes. I love the cranes. We used to ponder just how close they would come to hitting if the taller one was to turn over the shorter one. Welp sure we enough we got there early enough and they were facing each other in an early morning cuddle fest. I turned to my compadre and said that answers that. She responded with sheer joy. "Shore does "

Sorry about that, I'll be back at the stadium tomorrow.  I don't know why I picked a time I knew would be insanely busy to start a project like this but I'll definitely be keeping my weekly football updates going until I can get a little free time to shoot more stuff.

This is the best idea on this board since I joined.
Put each of them up for bid as suites for 2 with alcohol and food included (some rule about being that far off the ground will make it legal). Throw in a couple of buckets and you got a party experience not soon to be forgotten. Would easily go for a couple grand each. That buys lots of biscuits.

It's actually the first version.  I found a guy that had it sitting in his closet since he bought it in 2007 so it's basically brand new and I got him down to $350.  I guess the VRII is almost identical to the first.

I'm also putting together a "strobist" setup.  Are you into that at all?  Just bought all the equipment so I can start experimenting with that soon.

Lately people have been trying to use my camera to take pictures of me and the baby.  Needless to say I now have tons of poorly framed, blurry pictures of me and the baby.

I just went up to the stadium and it seemed like I got a few good pictures, but I haven't put them on the computer yet.  There was nobody working at all.  I know I'm probably someone who should know this, but are they continuing with construction during the season?

 :dunno:  I'm down.

I appreciate the heads up and I know somebody else mentioned this to me at one time, but I can't seem to find any info on my end to fix it.  None of my browsers give me an alert, google hasn't flagged it, and I use virustotal.com which checks 29 different virus scanners but it's clean on every one.  If it gives you any more details let me know.

Also, I can't read what it says in the red box on your screen cap, that may give me some info if you can provide it.

BTF update with a few pics from last night.

mocat, that font was pretty bad, check out the new one. If I wanted to make a huge watermark like a lot of photographers I could use a really cool script font, but it's hard to find one that looks legible when it's this small.

Parts that I didn't like...

Not enough purple lighting (yet?)

The first thing I saw when I drove up was Deb's stupid face staring back at me.  They should have switched the mens and womens pillar thing in the entryway because 99% will only see the womens side and that makes me sad.

Other than that it looks pretty awesome from the outside and I'm glad they're trying to add some green space too.  I'll be taking interior pictures Friday and those should go up in the afternoon sometime.

Mirror lock-up

Mirror lock-up is way more important for intermediate exposures (1/10, 1/20, stuff like that) than long exposures.

And more important than that is a first rate support system.

Jardine was the only shoot that I used anything over a second, most my night shots are actually in the range you mentioned.  I know the BTF the other night was at 1/15 which isn't exactly long, but long enough to need a tripod.  I use a wireless shutter trigger because even with a decent tripod I'd always have a little shake pressing the shutter button.

Video showing the interactive touchscreen in the lobby of the BTF...

http://www.ksunews.com/basketball-training-facility-screen-video/

Switch to HD and go full screen if you want to see it better.  I couldn't get Vimeo or Youtube to embed and automatically play in HD unless I paid for premium on Vimeo.

Sorry about the horrible sound.  There was a ton of people in there and the speakers weren't up loud enough, I should have done this before everybody got there.

Here you go, to download the full 1920x1080 go here:

http://www.ksunews.com/images/wallpapers/kstate-bball-1920.jpg

For smaller screens you can pick from quite a few different resolutions here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/62406704@N05/8069072127/sizes/h/in/photostream/

If anybody needs a bigger size or a different picture let me know, I'll try to make a "wallpaper" section on the site sometime soon.

There has been a coffee shop for a minimum of 7 years :dunno:

I remember the coffee shop going in. also i guess they like remodeled the outside courtyard area, and put those goofy orange chaise lounges that nobody ever uses. if that was phase 3, then OH BOY I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEW BUSHES THEY PLANT FOR PHASE 4

So when the plans for Basketball training center came out, I guess I thought that it would be connected in some way to Bramlage. Are there any murmurings of this eventually happening?

No.  Otherwise Bramlage would have to be brought up to ADA, fire, etc. codes.

Forget where it is, but there's a video of John saying it would have cost millions to connect them, so they decided it wasn't worth it.  Thanks John, like we don't have a few million laying around, asshat.

Do schools with elite training facilities and plush locker rooms have it set up so that the players use those same plush locker rooms for games, obviously with having the things connected?

I think it'd be weird to have nicer locker rooms in the practice gym than in the home arena.

There had been talks during the construction process to add a tunnel where the laundry room is at into Bramlage.  The additional cost of it was in the $7mill range though.

It was "The Athletic Dorm" originally, IIRC. Scholarship athletes were the only residents, other than a coach and his family who were like RA's in the other dorms. Athletes trashed the flyin'-eff out of the place and there were lots of police calls there. So, eventually, it wasn't the Athletic Dorm anymore. I suspect much of the current disrepair is traceable back to the A-Dorm days.

So what's going on with west stadium (Memorial Stadium). They've been at it for over a month now I'd say. First they gutted the whole thing and now they have scaffolding on each castle tower thing. It also appears that they knocked out several turrets near the south castle tower thing. What gives?

They are relocating the Purple Masque Theatre from the east side to the west side. Limestone is a porous rock that needs replaced periodically.

That's the rando modern house. Designed by a group led by a former Kstate Arch prof. Without profiling too much, the "Lee Residence" very well may be owned by the Hunam owner.

I hope they don't Sochi this.

Also I'll have pics to post later today.  The exterior is about done structurally, still working on getting ready for exterior for possible stone/stucco work.

The building at 4th and Pierre is coming along too.  Pretty large office building which is on the land for the old Manhattan Appliance and Sleep Store.  Doing the brick work now.  Also in the area, Radina's sign is up at their new diggs in the Blue Earth Plaza at 3rd and Ft Rileyish.

They are building a new pizza store and the new GTM facility on Menard's front lawn. Pizza Ranch looks almost done.

The Bluemont Hotel is coming along quite nicely. Their ad during the spring game said they'd be open on Sept 17, which is an earlier date than I had heard before. But with the Auburn game on the 18th it makes sense.

What is going up next the American Legion on McCall?

Depends on what the code for sidewalk easement is, most sidewalks are 48-60" (I think, not an expert on it) can't tell from the photos but there may be room. Bollards are only about 8" in diameter, so idk, probably would be a tight space if they add them, but who knows maybe they want a car to crash through it. You're a cop how many cars have crashed have you found hopping curbs in Manhattan in the first place.

Hopefully not too much like Umberger 105. While it's nice for sure, they did the seating awfully. If you are sitting on the ends and someone needs to get up and leave (or turn tests in before others are done) you have to stop, stand up, and let that person go by you. At least in the way the old Umberger 105, Cardwell 101, or old Pasley you had a little aisle to let people get by without having to stand up, so hopefully that don't eff this one up like that.

Just spitballing here... But June '14 is more recent than Oct '13. It's #2.

well, yeah.  seems logical.  Just wondering if anybody knew for sure.  The CBA webpage links both renderings in various places on the site.

#2 is clean and modern.  glass and stone.  Not very exciting, granted.

#1 looks like a mid-90s apartment complex.  what are those composite shingles?  nice!

suppose it's the great thing about art/architecture.  different perspectives.  I think building#1 is complete hot garbage.   :dunno:

Kinda looks like a train station.  But not like in New York or something.  More like in Cincinnati.

Did you check out the Cincinnati thread!?

Any updates on Engineering building, Business building, Foundation Center, Airport and other cool Manhattan buildings/renovations?

I apologize for not having pics.

Engineering- Seems to be moving along. The framing is done and most of the windows are in.
Business- Still in the very early phases. It's tough to see how much has been done so far.
Foundation- Steel is going up. It's kind of nice to see something other than a cement bunker over there.
Airport- Should be almost done? Last I had heard it was supposed to be finished this month...

Drove down Denison today and noticed two additional stop lights. Real red-yellow-green lights, not those orange blinking pieces of crap.

One is at the crosswalk next to Goodnow and the other is at Platt St. Both are great additions because waiting on slow freshmen staring at their phone while walking is the worst.

Also, the Union reno project is kicking it into high gear now. Food court is closed for the next year or so, so there will be food trucks in Bosco Plaza to make up for it.

Approx half of the steel is up at the new dorm.

New engineering wing looks like it's almost done (finally).

Also we have FOUR food trucks in the Bosco Student Plaza.  1 BBQ, 1 Vista, 1 Tasty Traveler, 1 Hotdog type place that use to do work on post.

There is 3 or 4 large cranes at NBAF, haven't really tried to get close.  Pretty cool coming into town and seeing them on one side/center of approach.  You can see concrete pumps for Wefald Hall and I think they had one up for NE corner work too.

I know they want to move parking north to the football stadium and bus people in, but that isn't feasible IMO.  Too many random issues to deal with that cause total cluster fucks a handful of times a year.  I mean it's not often, but seems like a huge problem when it does happen.

I should reclarify, Entomology is moving and Ag will take over Entomology office space. I'm not sure if that means other departments, like Sociology, would move with Entomology. Also not sure if they're constructing a new building or moving into a different one (Calvin, perhaps).

K-State continues to pursue each new building and project on an individual case basis, rather then trying to bundle (what is really a BGL legacy saving effort) projects into a single mass project that will actually have various components fall under the purview of different operating units of the university once they're completed, like KU has tried to do.

Outside of the boutique basketball dorm that KU athletics tried to get KU housing to finance for them.    KU wasn't rejected for a thing, particularly on this new project they are doing that was financed via Wisconsin.    The legislature just had questions, and any legislature is going to have questions when a state agency wants to increase its debt load by 76% with the stroke of a pen.    This lunacy from Butthurtistan is pure comedy as it was a rush job, because the clock is ticking for BGL and her perfectly pedestrian legacy at KU.

Architects have presented the College of Ag with rendos for an addition connecting Weber and Call Hall, a large new building in the parking lot north of Waters, and a new building and/or addition to Throckmorton which would require the demolition of Dykstra Hall. They will either do one or two of the three options. The College of Ag cited that the expansion they need for the college would cost $500 million. Also, apparently about 20% of current office space isn't even suited to be renovated and will/should be destroyed.

They are in the very early stages of this. Really just feeling things out so it'll at least be 2-3 years before they break ground, imo.

Well that road that passed the spork and grain science and the library is being turned into a major walk pathway.  Part of #walkingcampus, it is just weird you can't drive there anymore.  I guess it's gonna be lined with Trees and stuff too

It was pouring rain when I cruised through that new dorm expansion. So I didn't get pics. Enclosed walkways attached to second floors of existing dorms. Big expansion of Kramer. Will be a nice area when finished.

The demand is up. K-State had so many applicants the last few years to live with the dorms that they have been turning students from living in the dorms. K-State saw the opportunity to make more $$ so hence, more dorms.

It's a shock and awe move to solicit more funding by library management. K state has a budget of 880 million and can't keep a building open for 24 hours. Sounds like they should be fired for incompetence.

I would assume most top 50 public research universities have multiple libraries, most of which are tied to areas of study.

I'm with lib, I just wasn't a big fan of Fiedler, it's just too tiny.  The CIS department had labs and stuff but it was still in Nichols and it wasn't the best.  I really like Hale so if I ever did go study away from my apartment it was there.

Serious question; has the internet had an effect on the functionality of a central camps library in the quest for sources/information? Do people still use "the stacks" for functional educational purposes?
Title: Re: Construction Update Master Thread
Post by: The Big Train on August 21, 2016, 11:08:37 PM
I would say it's had a big impact.  I think I've checked out like 2-3 things ever from the library.  Mainly because it was something a professor put there for an assignment.

They have had a ton of digital copies of books and research database subscriptions.  That's mainly what I used for sources.

I think the stacks are just there for nostalgic purposes now

i swear there are more cranes per capita in mhk than any other city on the planet earth. and, you know, when you say “per capita,” there’s many per capitas. it’s, like, per capita relative to what? but you can look at just about any category, and we’re really at the top, meaning positive on a per capita basis, too.

Looks like the parking garage at Manhattan & Laramie is out for bid. I didn't know that was so far along. 5 levels w/ retail at the ground level.

Is that parking garage going to be the tallest building off campus?

It's only like 45 foot tall, so it won't be towering over crap, the new developments on bluemont are probably taller.

Other abnormally tall mhk buildings: the wareham/Harry's, campus holiday Inn, and the most wtf is that housing authority building that's randomly like 12 stories

I’ve always wondered what the deal was with the Unger Complex on Anderson

It was farm bureau before they moved to the new building off Seth Childs.

But why did they do that in that location?!

When it was built in 1954 that was just west of the city.

Not sure where to post. I learned tonight from some random cats I ran into that k-state now has a physicians assistant and nursing program? That’s cool.

We were just noticing what an ugly building that is and wondering what KSU uses it for these days. Is the Foundation still in there?
