i hate this time of year. at least in this part of the world.
-
i hate sweating.

i hate sweating.
sweating sucks, good call.

I know it's bad because of the tornados, but I love the years it constantly storms/rains in May/June in OK because it keeps the temps down and shortens the hot days of summer.

When it's hot just as many people die from heat stroke or whatever but it's not good TV so you don't hear as much about it.

It's their own fault they die of heat stroke. Tornadoes are less predictable, and sometimes people die even when they take shelter.

I would rather have the hot days and warm water for swimming and lake activities, we get plenty of cold and cool weather for 8 months of the year.

Hot weather > Cold weather
Not even close

I'm with you Skipper. I love the heat and the longer it stays warm, the more lake days WNK gets to enjoy.

It's their own fault for living in Oklahoma.

I drove through the central valley this weekend, sys. I may have thought about you, can't remember.

Peaks out at about 80 degrees in the mountains. Granted you only get about 3 months of it if you're lucky and then back to being a frigid bitch up here.

I prefer the cold over the hot
When it's cold and you need to go outside, you can always put more clothes on
When it's hot though, you can only take so much off to go outside or you'll end up in jail for streaking, or child perv stuff if you live near kids
-
If it were 100+ every day, I'd be a happy man.

This is dumb logic. You can drink water all day and not die in pretty much any heat in the US. Sweat is a great way to counteract heat. How do our bodies protect us from cold? goose bumps, big whoop.
-
so not dying equates to being comfortable

I lived in Michigan, bub. Don't talk to me about being cold. boom, roasted. I mean, frozen. WHAM!

Yeah, i think you missed the part about being able to put more clothes on in the cold

YEAH I THINK YOU MISSED THE PART ABOUT ME LIVING IN MICHIGAN
-
I'd rather be hot than cold. Has nothing to do with which is more likely to kill you. Just freezing is much more uncomfortable than being hot.

You don't have to drink anti-freeze all day to counter the cold, all you have to do is dress properly
-
"dressing properly" generally means you can't do anything outside, at all, other than walking. And then your eyes are cold. You can do anything in heat if you're properly hydrated.

wrong

would love to see rusty try and do 2,000 jumping jacks (non stop) when it's +100 degrees and humid outside.
answer: he wouldn't be able to.

I couldn't do that at any temp. So yeah, I should have said "you can do anything you could do at a more reasonable temperature." Good catch! thanks for your support.
-
Back in the pre-grad days, there were two different times where I got extremely sick from working in the heat.
Know how many times I have been hurt from working in the cold? You guessed it, none.
-
Guys, last summer my rear view mirror fell off my windshield from excessive heat. This has happened to me two other times in my car owning portion of my life.
Guess how many mirrors I have had to re-attach due to extreme cold?
None.
-
It's a good deal those wackos that climb Everest get to do it in a tropical climate or else it would be to cold to do anything...oh wait

can't do 2,000 jumping jacks? really? i can't believe that your extreme yoga regime has left you in such poor physical condition. oh well, maybe the tofu burrita will help.

A couple of years ago, my car wouldn't start because the battery got too cold. I have never had a car not start due to extreme heat.

they can walk, like I said.
-
I've lived in Colorado/ Iowa and I've lived in Texas/Kansas. I hated Iowa winters and Texas summers. They both suck.
-
So did I read that correctly, climbing the mist diffucult mountain in the world is just being able to walk in the cold
-
i hate this time of year. at least in this part of the world.
There's no AC in the bathrooms here. not only is that gross, but when it hit a dry 113 yesterday (felt like 103!) it completely bricked my wet wipes. Bricked 'em.

Is this regime controlled by ruthless yoga dictators?

can they do it year round? no, because it get's too cold.
-
I prefer 60-70 year round. That's why I should live in SF.
-

coastal ca is ok, but it's too narrow; you have to constantly worry about getting too far from the water to maintain your ideal temperature. montane mexico is better. 40 and 70 in the winter, 50 and 70 in the summer. perfect.
oh, and you better hot than cold people are probably some weird cryptic species. remind me never to mate with you.

False, it is not done year round do to the unstable snow and weather patterns during and after the monsoon season making the "walk" unpassable, not due to the cold
Anyways, you lost your troll after the "climbing everest is like cold weather walking" incident, move along to another fish
-
I like it really hot at the beginning of summer but hate it at the end. same for cold/winter.
-
obvs the fall is the best, spring a distant 2nd. summer sucks. winter meh.
Summer really rough ridin' sucks.

Summer nights are fantastic.
Winter nights? Yea eff that.

Colorado summers are pretty nice. Kansas summers can rot in hell.

Summer: Lots of daylight.
Winter: Holy eff I'm leaving work and it's already rough ridin' dark.

Yep, even with extreme heat you get pleasant conditions for any outdoor activity at dawn and dusk, the same cannot be said for extreme cold or even just regular winter weather.

K2 is a much more difficult climb than Everest.

How many degrees cooler is the removal of a neck beard worth is something that I'm pondering here. Something to chew on.

you've never lived anywhere that gets hot.

true I have no 3rd world experience, but even midsummer South Florida at dawn and dusk is tolerable.

love sweating. do it all the time. sometimes just for fun.

Today was the best type of weather day

Ok, let's go ahead and leave out fall and spring because obviously 50-70 is the most comfortable temperatures.
The battle here is between winter and summer. Let's call winter in MHK the three months of December, January, February and let's call summer in MHK June, July and August. The average winter temperature in MHK is ~32 degrees. The average summer temperature in MHK is ~77.
32 vs. 78. Wow. How is this even an argument? The thing that sucks about winter is that you can't even go outside and enjoy anything. Nobody grills outside during winter. Nobody drives with their windows down during winter. Nobody drinks on patios during winter. There's no winter equivalent to swimming pools (unless you're a bum who stands around a trashcan fire).
You know why? Because being cold is miserable. People grill outside in the summer because, although it's hot, you can stand it. Winter brings snow and ice which makes driving awful and makes everything a mess. Summer brings...some rain sometimes? Some hot temperatures? Big whoop.

I love the cold. So crisp and clean. I'm also for more puds staying home indoors and out of public view. Dlew has convinced me.
-
78 isn't hot, dlew.
-

never been to s florida, but dawn and dusk are not comparable. i've lived where it's too hot for people to live and even there it's comfortable at dawn. dusk is a few degrees off the daily high, which is intolerable.
-
78 isn't hot, dlew.
well that's the mean temperature so "where's the beef"

You're looking at it all wrong. The high is what's important, because its usually between 2-6 PM, right in prime outdoor fun time.
Average high in Manhattan in July/August is above 90. Awful. Just the worst ever.

Yep. Nothing like some nice afternoon fun time in January at 6 pm when it's already dark out.
"Who wants to play some afternoon flashlight tag in some 30 degree weather guys?!"

Winter is rough ridin' garbage. If you could eliminate rain snow and ice winter would be fine.

Sounds pretty fun!
Also, Winter has Christmas. My mom never bought me a new remote control car for the 4th of July. Advantage: Winter

and extremes? give me 0 over 110 any day of the week.

cfor3 is right though, the mean is meaningless. the high and low determine your comfort.

I just don't get Summer haters/winter lovers. I never will. But to each his own.

A trim pointer can lay down 30 miles in 3 hours in 32 deg F. Same dog won't make it an hour in 78 deg F weather. I'll take winter thankyouverymuch.

Sundresses, baseball, margaritas on the patio, cookouts, tennis, swimming pools, going to the bar without having to have the jacket dilemma just before you go in, outdoor concerts, float trips, lake houses, call me maybe, beersbee, driving with the windows down, bikinis, beach volleyball, taking the long way home. All hot weather activities. Bring it with your pud cold weather list.

Grilled food or casserole?

I guess D Lewski I'm more thinking in extremes. I prefer the extreme cold to extreme heat. Once its above 90 I'm pretty uncomfortable.

Winter=fat

Nope, pools are the opposite of suck when it's 105 out. Also girls in bikinis do not suck ever, but you aren't going to see them when it's cold out.

oh hey, a dead girl in a bikini on the sidewalk. look, her uncovered flesh seems to be melting a little there, where it contacts the pavement. girls are people, kittonmitton. it's not acceptable to roast them to death to slake your prurient hungers.
-
I've never heard of a person (under like 75 years old) dying from being outside when it's hot, so it's probably not very common. Have heard of people freezing to death whilst outdoors.

a naked or bikini'd person tethered in full sun at 105 f without water will die within 4 hours.

not sure but at least they won't get mosquito bites

prove it!!!!

i used to hate the heat, but you just make an effort to get out in it every day and you get acclimatised really quickly... i just take the top off the jeep, and thanks to infrequent rain keep it off until september... you get to cruise around top down whistling at phillies and you no longer shrink away from a hot day like a dog from a vacuum cleaner
-
how long will a naked person survive in 0 deg?

So the naked cold person gets food, but the naked hot person can't get water? Plus, the naked hot person would think a swimming pool to be pretty awesome, further proving my point.
-
how long will a naked person survive in 0 deg?

so it's really no better than the heat
-
I can't believe all the fat, pale, pasty out of shape and generally unhealthy people that are posting in this thread
-
So the naked cold person gets food, but the naked hot person can't get water?
food is preserved by the cool weather, remaining available. the water boils off in the heat and then the person dies.

I bet your cold person would like some boiling water when they are looking at their chicken they brought that has frozen solid.

I think both this graph, and the previous stat about the 78/32 average are skewing the data. Both are average temperatures throughout the ENTIRE day... yes, i'd wager that through the 110 degree days of summer, the average temperature is somewhere in the low 90s, giving a summer round average of those 3 months at 78... similarly, are 60% of day in January below freezing? maybe averaged out over the whole day, but the day time high, even in january, is above freezing more often than not.
Come back to me when you have averages of daytime highs, which is far more representative... also, none of this would factor in windchill or humidity, two very important factors in determining comfort which seams the goal of this little repartee

You really need to put on the sulphur chowder. Completely keeps them away.
The line workers for power companies and telephone keep socks filled with it, and then just slap the socks against their boots and stuff before they walk into the grass.

Four equal length seasons.

I mention this periodically but there is a short list of peculiarities that people have that 100% guarantees I will not like hanging out with you IRL and probably think you're weird. one of those is the people that really strain to not turn on their heat or AC. like they make a point to suffer through heat and brag when they finally turn the AC on when it hit 105 in July. My thermostat is set at optimum comfortable temperature with no regard for season. it's much easier just to make an extra $2 a day or whatever it costs than to suffer through some fluctuations in temperature or humidity.
-
Sometimes (a lot actually) I run the ac or heat with the windows open for maximum comfort. I do this in the car too. I like open windows

I'm with you. I wonder if you are also a guy who will shun anyone who would drive around a parking lot or wait for a "close" spot rather than just going to an empty spot and walking in. Or those people who driver around to find cheaper gas. All of these people can GTFOOMF.

there is absolutely nothing better in this world than driving around with the windows down blasting AC. however i would never do that in the house.

I almost shut my windows in my bedroom last night because it was too cold.

We have a super bad ass variable speed system that I have been mostly unfamiliar with. We had a spring check up and found that the fan should be set to On rather than Auto. Ever since, there has been zero variation in the temp of the house and the second floor is super nice rather than sometimes warm.
pretty great.

Is the compressor variable speed? Just the fan?

It's not that scary. Just do it. I was asked to move somewhere this spring. I said no, because the town is gross and the weather sucks where they wanted me to move. Would move somewhere nice, but does it really get finer than Carolina?

Ouch. Bad time for that. Ye olde supply and demand will cost you bigly.
-
are bids higher this time of year? I understand installers being busy, but the price of the units themselves can't cost more can they?
-
I'm not in the pocket of big HVAC but I would assume standard supply and demand principles would apply.
-
are you saying there's a shortage of air conditioners available during warmer months? Or is the shortage merely labor? We've been assured by most of the companies we've had give bids that scheduling isn't a problem. I'll wait another 3 months if they really vary prices based on the season...MOOSE! (wrong thread)

Well, I mean, in season for virtually anything is going to be more expensive. That's why you get such great deals on virtually everything in their "off-season".
-
interesting. I wonder if this is true in all fields, TBT. For instance, if I hire an accountant on January 5th, that's probably noticeably cheaper than a few weeks late when most people are just getting their returns ready, huh.
-
Being a blatant smartass isn't helping your cause. I had sweats on today pretty much all day because my AC was on so high.
-
probably bought those in summertime, huh. Good thinking.

No I just turned down my fully functional AC to about 65 and I got a little cold so I busted out the sweats I bought at full price this past winter.

Your best price break is February and March. Sometimes you'll get deals in the fall.

Was 87° at 8:30 this morning. Swore I was done with outdoors for the day at that point when finishing up Cake & Coffee with the boy then. But he wanted to swim. Set up the canopy over the redneck hot-tub when he when down for a nap at lunch.
So was able to keep pool temp at 90° even though it is 103° with a 113° heat index. That 3’6” monster is my pride and joy that is almost exactly 3 years old. Also, Scout says ‘sup.

Dry heat tho
Like SD I grew up in Western KS and I moved to Topeka in '88. It could get to 100 drg w/ 18% humidity and if there was a breeze I could work all day. I never had a problem with heat until I moved to Topeka. It was in the upper 80s one day and I was in the backyard working on a project, I was sweating like a hog and after several hours I got heat sickness. It's a rough ridin' sauna in eastern KS and the rough ridin' humidity will get you if you think you can work outside without any way to cool off.
