You will develop a hatred for freight trains.  Also, don't plan anything for awhile after 3pm, as you may not be on time.

If you are talking about the beertrain, it won't matter as I am pretty sure I'll be at least a 6 by then.   :beersmiley:

No, not you.  KCFD.  You'll be just fine, we haven't been down there to do that yet but have friends that said it's fun.  We were going to one year but it was when Colorado was burning and flooding to the ground.

I think the only negative to the trip will be a pak'd overnight stay in Canon City.....  :barf:

Only thing we have planned starts at 8 0 that night.

We're packing plenty of booze, planning on being at least a 5 the entire ride

Yeah, you should be good by then.  I've only taken it to StL so your route may go by quicker, but we showed up 2-3 hours after expected.

you should pretty much always figure the ride will take 50% longer due to various issues.   IE, don't plan anything important around the arrival time.

The Southwest Chief usually arrives in Chicago on time.  It's the last stop, and there is a fair amount of flex time built in the schedule. The latest I've arrived is a half hour late.

Passenger trains with the exception of the Acela don't have priority over other traffic (freight) so it's slow as crap usually.

I was looking at taking a train ride today. Amtrak from Louisville to Chicago is a damn Greyhound bus. :(

I have never riden a train outside Europe. But I've seen some movies about it. You're probably going to start in the very last car. Try to work your way to the front using an improvised battering ram, explosives, of whatever else you can muster. Don't eat the protein bars. You don't even wanna know what's in those. Good luck.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

I bet I've ridden amtrak 50 times over the last year.  Probably the Train King of goEMAW.

It's fine -- relaxing enough, nice to be able to get up and move around. Especially the sweet, elite lounge car. But if you're supposed to get in at 3, i'd be shocked if you arrived before 4:30 or 5.  I took it from Champaign to Chicago once a week and it wasn't uncommon for it to be more than an hour and a half late.

I would never take it from Chicago to KC.

Not dlew but I can help here.

Highballed- Clear to depart

Frogged - Usually means you are F'd or can't move. Usually occurs when a train is blocked from moving by another train (You would need to "jump" over a train to find a way out)

Elephant Style - All Locomotives are facing the same direction

Foamer - A person who loves trains, will "foam" at the mouth in excitement when they see a train.

Going to beans - Lunch Break

Deadhead - Extra crews riding a train back to their "home" base

DP'd - Get your mind out of the gutter, it means "Distributed Power". Engines on the head and rear end.

FRED - "Flashing Rear End Device" Flashing can be replaced with the F word

"Add Darky no Sparky" is a term used to confirm that all handbrakes have been released as a train departs.

Reefer - Refrigerated inter-modal container or railcar.

Dope - Instructions for work to be performed, "Come up here and I'll dope you up"

Hump Yard - Cars are sorted by pushing them over a small hill and allowing gravity to take them to the designated track.

took the SW Chief from KC to Chicago... Flew back... I'd do that again. Relaxing trip and the lounge car was good to drink and watch the fab Iowa scenery fly by....  took another from Seattle to Portland... It was fine but sat next to some extremely smelly man eating smelly food.

Probably take the KC to Hermann train at some point to do some wine drinking...wish there were more trains of the faster variety around.

The problem with trains is they kill you much more frequently than passenger air travel.

I've traveled several times by train and enjoyed all the trips. BYOB worked well. That said, on overnight trips it takes a couple of minutes to get used to the shower because the train rocks back and forth. Once you master the rhythm of that, you have it made. Looking forward to my next train trip.

Seattle to Portland train was a great experience I would definitely do again.  KC to Chicago?  Well, who knows I won't rule it out but probably not.  Acela corridor?  Yes plz.

The only train I have ridden was in France. I would like to do some kind of train ride vacation here....But where to? And how to convince Gooch to ride on a train for long hours?

I think a train ride could only be a little further than that Seattle-Portland route before a flight would make way more sense.  That route, and I imagine ones like that between relatively close cities, is right in the sweet spot of where it's more comfortable than driving and doesn't take that much longer but also much better than flying as far as the stations being better located than airports and being able to walk over like 15 minutes before departure so you come out ahead on your total rough ridin'-with-travel time.
