Rising on trains
« on: September 14, 2015, 08:49:19 AM »
Anyone done it?  Taking amtrak to Chicago this weekend with some buds. Any tips and/or tricks to make the ride more enjoyable?

I'll punch you in the face for $1 (not really, but you know what I mean), it doesn't make it a good deal.

last time I rode on a train (amtrak from KC to Chicago) the sewage line broke and we were stuck on the tracks smelling raw crap for two hours. food for thought.

The only actual train ride I've taken was the eurostar from london to paris. I've never been on a domestic train outside of airport transfer trains, various cities light rail and subways, the historic henry doorley zoo steam train and the mono-rail and steam train at disney world. But, I read a lot of travel blogs and they all at some point are like "wow, amtrak is so cheap, I'm going to try it out" and then are 100% all "never again" afterwords.

Lil sd would like a short train trip I bet. Where does omaha go to?

What keeps me out of the train game when I was going to use it was the train left at like 4am from Topeka or kc or something

I enjoy it.  Very relaxed way to travel, it's fun if you aren't in a hurry.  Since the train stations are actually downtown, you don't have to worry about transit from downtown to airport, time arriving early to park, time arriving early for security (KC, lol, precheck lol, but still), baggage claim.  Also, you can get away with BYOB and get smashed, or take advantage of the fairly cheap bar.

yes, the amtrak leaves from both places way too early in the morning.

I was expecting a Katdaddy thread when I first looked at this.  Turns out it is just poor spelling....

Probably going to take this trip sometime in the near future though...

You will develop a hatred for freight trains.  Also, don't plan anything for awhile after 3pm, as you may not be on time.

If you are talking about the beertrain, it won't matter as I am pretty sure I'll be at least a 6 by then.   :beersmiley:

Only thing we have planned starts at 8 0 that night.

We're packing plenty of booze, planning on being at least a 5 the entire ride

No, not you.  KCFD.  You'll be just fine, we haven't been down there to do that yet but have friends that said it's fun.  We were going to one year but it was when Colorado was burning and flooding to the ground.
