That thing cost $10,345 back in 1972, which the inflation adjuster calculator says is $61k in current bucks.

Cross post from Shame Yourself Thread

A couple weeks ago me and a buddy were heading out to Colorado for a bachelor party. We left KC thursday night and were planning on staying at my grandparents old farm in Western KS that night before before leaving in the morning to complete the trip. My cousin currently lives on the farmhouse and warned us the road was muddy. My dad warned us that the road to the farmhouse was muddy but I told him my buddy's truck had 4wd.

What I failed to input into the equation was we were stupid city boys who didn't know how to drive in the mud. Got stuck at about 1130, 4 miles from town and 6 miles from the farmhouse. My cousin works nights so he couldn't pull us out until the morning. We tried to dig out for about 1 hr before we realized it was pointless and started drinking beer until we fell asleep.

My cousin shows up the next morning, says "You city boys need some help?" and within 3 minutes we were unstuck.

I would think restoring a tractor would be expensive.

Love the 4020 Tom. My dad was a JD mechanic & part-time farmer.  I grew up driving driving JD tractors and spent a lot of time plowing with a 4010.

About half the cost of the wife's kitchen and family room renovation five years ago.
:Woohoo:

What did you have to do for restoration

A lot time tracking down original parts (used a few aftermarket, but original where we could).  My son and I did the light mechanical stuff.  Credit to my oldest son for making connections with some great people who make a living doing this kind of stuff...

Heritage Tractor in Lawrence, KS. (parts)- it was Deems Farm Equipment- where dad bought the tractor originally.
Collin Sheeley in Nortonville, KS. (mechanical)- new wiring harness, PTO repair, fuel pump rebuild, compression test, gaskets
Don's Tractor Salvage in Beattie, KS. (parts)
Moonlight Restoration in Axtell, KS. (paint)

Tractor did not require a complete overhaul so that helped the budget a bunch.  We spent a couple of years tracking down parts and getting it back into good working condition.  Then we let the paint guys work their magic.

I have long said that Tom is the best poster on this blogsite, and the work he's put in ITT just proves it.

My grandpa used to pull the grandkids in his JD to go get ice cream. MamaWonderMeal would freak out about it.

Should probably change this thread title to "Ask Tom". Tom has forgotten more about farming than steve dave will ever know.

is that the kind that pops wheelies?

The 2 cylinder johnny-poppers with a hand clutch were best for popping wheelies.

$3 corn so my cousin wants to store it.  I had to climb my fat butt up the grain silo for first time in many years to survey repairs to grain vac tube.  Which one of you engineer types can help me out...
