I have a rhodesian ridgeback. Get one of those.

So, we rescued a dog and were told he was a yellow lab / golden retriever mix (pretty much looks like a smallish lab). After looking up rhodesian ridgebacks, however, I think he might have some of that in him. Looks almost identical in the face. Hmmm.

Labs or bust.
Labs are hands down my fav.  Another good choice for a medium/large dog would be a greyhound.  They don't shed and are very docile and loyal.  We had them when I was growing up and you couldn't ask for a better pet.  They can handle the heat and would be perfect to take on your runs.  Although they are built for speed, they are not necessarily a high energy dog (in other words, they are not spaz's).  If you're looking at doing the rescue thing, you could take one off of a track somewhere.

Greyhounds are cool but you can never, ever let them off their leash.   People have had greyhounds for yrs, let them off the leash, (just from the car to the house) and found the dog 25 miles away, dead in some forest.  Great for apartment dwellers though because they prefer small, enclosed places or laps, it makes them feel safe.

They are just weirdly shaped.

And all the ones I've ever known were really mean.
Mean and dumb.
I think that the turn this thread took was mean and dumb.

Did not mean to offend you. Wiener dogs are cool for some people. But I think they are mean/ugly. Doesn't mean all of them are, just like 90%. Sorry bro  :frown:

I have a weird hatred for small dogs though because Mrs FP's family had one when we were dating and they treated it like a human... dressed it up and all that crap.

I hated the thing, so now I just generally hate any dog that is small.

Was Mrs. FP's dad a bisexual guy?

Yes.

Get a boxer.  Do not crop the ears.
Yeah, did not crop mine.

As far as weiner dogs go, I deal with 1 on a semi regular basis. Barks all the fuckin' time. Otherwise I like him. Unfortunately the barking is enough for me to hate him.

bullshit.  just about any dog that never gets let offleash will act like a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) when suddenly freed.  greyhounds have a v. strong chase instinct, but they can be off leash in all sorts of situs.

That's just what I read on several rescue/rehab sites.  I don't think they meant that greyhounds will always take off if you take them off leash, more that there is always a chance one will take off and you're going to catch that dog.  Just check a few of the sites, they all stress this point pretty strongly.

It's possible. Our dog is half ridgeback, half mutt. He has some basset hound, pit, and something else in him. His ridge is only present when he gets excited or on the hunt.

Great dogs, maybe more high energy than you want but probably not much different than a lab.  There are viszla rescue groups in about every state.
