I think I was just failing to realize you were only talking about commuter culture. In which case you are pretty spot on.

I was actually only talking about people who ride bikes in public.

As opposed to people who ride bikes in private?

I mean, I'm not sure who you think these "serious" riders are. Probably a combo of weekenders/casual professionals. BELIEVE ME I COVERED EVERYONE

Looking into getting a road bike, for triathlon.  Is it better to try to get a cheap new bike, or find a used one of better brand?  I don't want to spend much over $800.

Get fitted... than go with the bike that "fits" you the best.

Get more bike for your money going used... Cervelo p2 used for example if going for a tri bike.

But if not going to Tri forever, just get a decent road bike with good components.... its the machine not the bike that makes it run.
yes

you can do a tri on a good road bike.  If you're willing to travel KC has a MUCH more active Craig's List section.  You might also check to see if any local bike stores have used bikes.  Some stores will take trade ins.

oh good god BART talk.....

so yes Big Poppi is the place for elites.  Pathfinder is good too, I've only interacted with their shop manager type guy or whoever he was.  Very nice, a bit introverted for my tastes.

Barry can go back to being butthurt

So I've got around 5 buddies that live within 2 miles of my house, been talking for the past year about buying a cheap MTN Bike to ride over to their houses when I want to watch some football and get pak'd.

Well, ole ben ji finally pulled the trigger on a MTN Bike and bought one off craigslist yesterday. A BAD ASS Magna 21 speed for $75!!! Guy bought it new from Target for $120 and only rode it like 2 times!

I took it for a quick spin around the hood last night and felt like a 12 yr old kid all over again!  :D

i think the worst thing would have been the cold factor coming down it every morning around 7:30 a.m. That and the ice would make it near impossible. There are parts of the road that are completely shaded and it isn't abnormal to feel a 10-15 degree drop in temperature when you go in from the sun. Would need some seriously warm clothes. Actually a big part of why we moved. Sold one of the cars in anticipation. Other than that, the ride up isn't too awful, just would add another 20-25 minutes to my commute time.

every once in a while i would switch it up and take the long way home...

How many bikes does one need? n+1 :-)

Good luck on your commuting. I cover a three state territory. Makes bike commuting tough.
