I'm happy for Wichita, I'm glad they're building a new stadium. This AAA team will fail, for a similar reason in which that failed in New Orleans, the affiliation.
I've lived in three similar sized metro areas; Wichita, Portland, ME, and Des Moines and I've seen minor league baseball in all three. Des Moines and Portland each have well established, local affiliations, Wichita, most of the time did not. They were only affiliated with the Royals for a short time before the Royals moved them to Arkansas. They were affiliated with the Angels for most of that time. When you go to a minor league ballpark with a local affiliation, it makes all the difference. At I-Cubs games, the stands are filled with Cubs jerseys, same with Sea Dogs and Paw Sox games. I lived in Portland before they were the Red Sox AA affiliate, ironically enough they were the Marlins affiliate, and that's when the Marlins were competitive but no one cared nearly as much, there was no community connection. I'm sorry Wichita, you'll get a boost from the stadium from a year or two, but the affiliation will eventually kill this franchise.
