True Story - my first trip to San Fran I took a cab from the airport to a downtown hotel. As I pull up to the hotel I see a huge group of people all riding their bikes.....naked. One of the worst things I have ever seen. God bless America I guess.

I've been to San Francisco several times and once while there referred to the city as "Frisco," which I had seen in the media somewhere. I thought the local to whom I was speaking was going to kill me. Since then, I never say "Frisco" in San Francisco.
I thought the homeless people in San Francisco were a bit too direct.

Man, this thread really makes me want to go back to San Francisco, even though it was probably meant to do the opposite. Just not very many jobs in Mechanical Engineering there from what i've seen.

They also crap on the sidewalk too much.
Homeless that hang out in the same park and just party every afternoon. They don't seem mentally ill, just people that want to live in a park and party

Their presence generates a certain funky vibe that appeals to the third phase of the gentrification sequence: (3) "bourgeois bohemians," to use David Brooks' term. Free-spirited but well-educated and willing to strike a bargain with middle-class normalcy, this group is skillfully employed, buys old houses and lovingly restores them, engages tirelessly in civic affairs, and can reliably be found at the Saturday morning farmers' market. Usually childless, they often convert doubles to singles, which removes rentable housing stock from the neighborhood even as property values rise and lower-class renters find themselves priced out their own neighborhoods. (Gentrification in New Orleans tends to be more house-based than in northeastern cities, where renovated industrial or commercial buildings dominate the transformation).
That NOLA food truck rant is fantastic. Highly reccomend.
“Real” food trucks—the kind of food trucks that the NOFTC cares about and fights for—are like gastronomic EMS for hipster fuckheads: little mobile factories reproducing a genericized leisure-class remix of world cuisine, the kombucha-infused Sriracha empanadas that capitalism has trained moneyed, socially aspirant young Americans to demand.

San Francisco Urban (8)
Unlike the rest of California, which in the early twentieth century saw an influx of people from the South and other parts of the West, San Francisco continued to be settled by people from the Northeast and Northern Midwest, and elements of their dialects (North Midland, Upper Midwestern, Inland Northern) can be found. Mission dialect, spoken by Irish Catholics in a specific part of the city is very much like the New York City dialect.

So they want to keep part of SF kinda-sorta run down so lower income people have a place to live?
This is pretty much correct. But most of the complaining is from middle-income folks (like the types who can afford to go to music festivals) who don't like the new kinds of people and businesses coming in, our their expensive rent. It's really fascinating to watch as an outsider.
In this scenario, it is the
In this scenario, it is the landlords who are the leeching parasites, living off of the hard work of those in the rental market. Always so entitled, yet contributing nothing, while they take advantage of their neighbors, the landed gentry feel almost like it is their birthright to always demand more from others. This is a bubble, it will contract, and rents will drop again, the vultures will know fear again.
I have no idea, but it's hard to imagine that too many low income people are being priced out because almost all are already long gone from SF. It seems like it would be more like a second wave of gentrification with people who have made the choice to live there now getting priced out - perhaps even after contributing to the first wave of gentrification themselves.

The man was identified by BART police as 24-year-old Yeiner Garizabalo. Friends said Tuesday he goes by Yeiner Perez and is a dedicated acrobat and performer. The episode, they said, was strongly out of character.
“He’s been through a lot of stress — he seems to have been having a breakdown,” said Slim Chance, who leads the Berkeley circus troupe ClownSnotBombs. Perez was a member from January to early May. “That seems to be the tip of it right there. I just can’t tell you anything more because I don’t really know what his state is. It’s not at all like his normal character.”
Chance said Perez, normally a “workaholic acrobat,” stopped showing up to the group’s practices several days before the episode.
“I don’t think it was anything with drugs,” Chance said. “I don’t know. We’re thinking he may have even had a stroke sometime last year. We’ve been trying to piece it together ourselves.”

ClownSnotBombs is a non-profit community circus troupe that believes joy and laughter are a fundamental human right. Our mission is to provide quality affordable entertainment and learning opportunities for all Bay Area communities. We are a company of eight multi-talented physical theater artists, acrobats, circus performers, and musicians and our work weaves dynamic physical theater with comedia and acrobatics into an extravaganza of wonder that tickles the funny bone.
ClownSnotBombs is currently working on an all new show: “A Spaghetti Western.” It’s a western themed comedy with a circus twist directed by Faeble Kievman. The show combines physical theater and clown technique with circus skills, acrobatics, dance and original music and has been created through an intensive five month development period.

If you ever wanted to masturbate nonchalantly while talking to nude strange women this is the spot. I came (ha ha ha lol) around 3PM on a weekday so it wasn't too crowded and the stench of ejaculate wasn't too prevalent. The ladies ranged from above-average to rugged and you're not gonna see any bleach-blonde faketit baldsnatch. They mainly look like decent looking girls you eye**** on the bus and at coffee places.
Some tips -
*Save time and money by coming in primed and ready. The women don't do anything terribly exciting from an dancing standpoint, so if you're into lingering for hours you're better off going to tha horse or something. I had just eaten a large meal and wasn't in the mood, but who can pass up a coverless peepshow? I'll come in with a semi next time and spend less duckets.
*Pay enough (once you're comfortably situated) to finish in the allotted time. Whipping out more cash and feeding the machine mid-sesh is annoying.
*If you drop a dollar, just leave it. Even if you're not that grossed out, after you finally peel it off the floor it might not be machine compatible.
*You can see other patrons, so if the dancers aren't doing it for you, you can try to make eye contact and make things creepy.

This seems kinda San Francisco-y. Unionized strip club, building's rent tripled in 12 years. Is this in a "hot" part of town Rusty?

It's where there are a ton of strip clubs, not particularly "hot" relative to the rest of the City.
I did find a great yelp review of the place, though:Quote+1 for unions and female empowerment or whatever

Back in April, the grossly rich town of Atherton sent President Obama the bill for his trip to the Peninsula community. When the president told Atherton where the town could shove its bill, city leaders then tried to shakedown the homeowners who hosted the president. They even went as far as threatening to place a lien on the homes.
We fell on the sword for that one

In reality, yes, the median household income in metropolitan San Francisco is higher than it is in Akron (by about $30,000). But that smaller income will buy you much, much more in Ohio. To be more specific, if you make the median income in Akron – a good proxy for a spot in the local middle class – 86 percent of the homes on the market there this month are likely within your budget.
If you're middle-class in San Francisco, on the other hand, that figure is just 14 percent. Your money will buy you no more than 1,000 square feet on average. That property likely isn't located where you'd like to live. And the options available to you on the market are even fewer than they were just a year ago, according to data crunched by Trulia. To frame this another way, the median income in metro San Francisco is about 60 percent higher than it is in Akron. But the median for-sale housing price per square foot today is about 700 percent higher.
my mom just moved into a place that's similar to one she rented in topeka for 800 a month, but with a smaller yard. it's now 3500 a month :sdeek:

I live in the East Bay (because it's so much cheaper), and even here, every single homeowner I know did it with some sort of down payment assistance from family. No one can buy their first house without some sort of help like that. I think there's a serious bubble here.

Are all the tech companies paying enough for people to afford this housing and driving the price up, like all the gentrification people are claiming? What other factors are playing into it? Really desirable sushi? Mustaches on cars? :dunno:
i don't think sf real estate prices are in a bubble at all. sf is really small, it's not really fair to compare a sf price to an akron price, for example, because the akron median includes a lot of prices that would be alameda, oakland, san jose, etc if they were translated to the bay area.
and also, it's san franfuckingcisco, not rough ridin' akron.
read a good thing the other day about how the grouping of like minded people that drew them together doesn't happen anymore because it doesn't need to. a lot of things that could only happen when people were interacting now happen online. jobs are the same way. a larger percentage of the jobs out there are available from wherever you are all the time. doesn't make living in phoenix or some other loserville any more desirable though I guess.
it's a poor comparison, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bubble.

there's 7 billion people in the world and 99.9% of them would rather live in sf than where they live.

the story of $4 toast:
http://www.psmag.com/navigation/health-and-behavior/toast-story-latest-artisanal-food-craze-72676/
The other main players on Trouble’s menu are coffee, young Thai coconuts served with a straw and a spoon for digging out the meat, and shots of fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice called “Yoko.” It’s a strange lineup, but each item has specific meaning to Carrelli. Toast, she says, represents comfort. Coffee represents speed and communication. And coconuts represent survival—because it’s possible, Carrelli says, to survive on coconuts provided you also have a source of vitamin C. Hence the Yoko. (Carrelli tested this theory by living mainly on coconuts and grapefruit juice for three years, “unless someone took me out to dinner.”)
In some ways, the shop seemed to make itself downright difficult to like: It serves no decaf, no non-fat milk, no large drinks, and no espressos to go. On Yelp, several reviewers report having been scolded by baristas for trying to take pictures inside the shop with their phones. (“I better not see that up on Instagram!” one reportedly shouted.)
Nevertheless, most people really seem to love Trouble. On my second visit to the shop, there was a steady line of customers out the door. After receiving their orders, they clustered outside to drink their coffees and eat their toast. With no tables and chairs to allow them to pair off, they looked more like neighbors at a block party than customers at a cafe?. And perhaps most remarkably for San Francisco, none of them had their phones out.
The menu also features a go-for-broke option called “Build Your Own Damn House,” which consists of a coffee, a coconut, and a piece of cinnamon toast.
At first, Carrelli explained Trouble as a kind of sociological experiment in engineering spontaneous communication between strangers. She even conducted field research, she says, before opening the shop. “I did a study in New York and San Francisco, standing on the street holding a sandwich, saying hello to people. No one would talk to me. But if I stayed at that same street corner and I was holding a coconut? People would engage,” she said. “I wrote down exactly how many people talked to me.”
The answer was easy: she was good at making coffee and good with people. So Glen told her it was time she opened a checking account. He told her to go to city hall and ask if they had information on starting a small business. And she followed his instructions.
With $1,000 borrowed from friends, Carrelli opened Trouble in 2007 in a smelly, cramped, former dog grooming business, on a bleak commercial stretch. She renovated the space pretty much entirely with found materials, and with labor and advice that was bartered for, cajoled, and requested from her community of acquaintances.
A few weeks ago, I went back to Trouble because I hadn’t yet built my own damn house. When my coconut came, the next guy at the bar shot me a sideways glance. Sitting there with a slice of toast and a large tropical fruit, I felt momentarily self-conscious. Then the guy said to the barista, “Hey, can I get a coconut too?” and the two of us struck up a conversation.
i thought of your dad when I read that. Also, I bet she is an exhausting friendthe story of $4 toast:

But Carrelli can’t rely on such a small set of intimates. Strong ties have a history of failing her, of buckling under the weight of her illness. So she has adapted by forming as many relationships—as many weak ties—as she possibly can. And webs of weak ties are what allow ideas to spread.
I do like how San Franian's(did I just invent this term?!?) know how super weird they are and embrace it.
they are intentionally weird to get attention. very few of them are actually weird. you will find a much higher percentage of actual weird people in the midwest.
Some of the new market-rate homes, like the townhomes being built at the Hunters Point Shipyard, or some of the 1,600 units planned for the former Schlage Lock site in Visitacion Valley, will be affordable to the middle class by virtue of their far-flung location, officials said.
A two-bedroom townhome at the shipyard, for example, will go on the market for less than $600,000, a city official said.

Yesterday we had a big "meeting" at work with a Q&A session from the executives and like 200 people. Well some girl asks a question, and for whatever reason, an executive tells her, "You'll want to make sure to fill your car up with gas before you leave." Well the girl interrupts and says, "Um, I actually drive a Leaf, so I don't fill up with gas any more." And so naturally she gets a round of applause. WTF

my guess is she was producing too much milk for the neonate and she didn't want the excess to go to waste. second guess (sort of related) is that she wanted to lose weight, knew that producing milk was energetically very expensive, was expressing milk unneeded by the neonate to siphon calories from her body and didn't want the milk to be wasted.

rusty, bbc world had a piece this morning on my way to work about san franciscoians being freakshows about google buses and techies and stuff. talked to a bunch of people who said they've ruined the city and stuff. some other guy kinda defended them and said that they are vilified and not all of them are rich. made me dislike san franciscoiaons somewhat listening to them. also a mom who lived in a gov. housing thing because she couldn't find work there. had a couple kids. was kinda interesting but she seemed to be a loser who wasn't serious about finding work so I didn't feel bad for her. kids tho. felt bad for them kinda.
SF politicians! You wanna talk euphemistically about "cleaning up" the plaza at the 16th street BART station, I'd rather focus on regulating the number of people per day who are allowed to scream through a loudspeaker into my face that I'm going to BURN IN HELL unless I accept Jesus Christ as my personal savior than anything having to do with an increased police presence or somehow magically removing that corner's (overwhelmingly mentally ill) homeless and drug-addicted population. And I've been mugged there.
and I've been mugged there....
this one guy also made the point that the google buses had wifi and AC and were really nice while the public buses were crappy. I couldn't really grasp how that was meaningful but the guy saying it was saying it like it was a very important thing people should know about.

This morning a number of parents became upset when they saw a gardener spraying a substance on our weeds. I want to assure you that this was not a chemical herbicide or pesticide. It was a product called "BurnOut II," a totally organic weed killer made of food-grade clove oil and citric acid.
I have spoken to the Maintenance, Operations & Facilities department. They have apologized for the upset this incident caused and they have agreed to notify us before they spray this product again, so that everyone knows this is a natural product.
Should you have any additional concerns, please contact the school office.

If it sucks ass now SD should just grab the ferry in Sausilito.I'm apparently doing a bike ride over the golden gate bridge on fridayI had possibly the most satisfying meals of my life at Guaymas in Tiburon after doing that ride, the Yellowtail was so delicious I had a second order.
I've been there, thought it was terrible, don't go there steve dave. your ride must have made you delirious.
*although Guayamas doesn't seem like a place to get yellowtail so maybe you got your tiburon restaurants mixed up

I met thomas keller at an event in yountville last weekend. he was in a dunk tank (I didn't throw) for a big bastille day party at bouchon. was pretty fun. there were a bunch of german guys with a camera crew following them around shaking everyones hands but I didn't know who they were. I was about a 6 on the wine pak'd scale so that could have had something to do with it.

Also, rumors (incorrect) of a bar/music venue closing brings out awesome strawman-destroying comments.
Holliday, who also manages and books The Chapel, says she feels like the venue will have to do what Slim's did and shell out more money for soundproofing: "We are going to end up with the same problem. Do iphones not mutitask or something?
Do iphones not mutitask or something?
I know Uber gives you your own phone that you have to use to drive for them. I think a lot of these services often assign pickups to the first driver that responds, so you're probably most likely to get the pickups you want running multiple phones at once. And you could have one as gps, and one to track your stocks or something.
The detail I most remember about this is multiple mentions of poop on the street.

consulting chef Jamie Lauren commented that "I hate to call [Bandidos' cuisine] white people Mexican food, but it is,"
"It was never the most popular ethnic slur, but I'm familiar with that term being used as a slur from those old movies in the '30s and '40s, where all the villains were Mexican. Even some younger Latinos might think that think this is stupid, but it's because they never had to live with that. Older Latino activists fought so that name wouldn't be used."

Should we do Sonoma Thursday or Friday? I hear it's pretty crazy on the weekends out there.
We really don't have any plans as of right now. Her family is showing up at different times (thursday and friday) and we really want to see wine country one of the days we're there. We'll be there pretty early on Thursday. We're taking the earliest flight possible.Should we do Sonoma Thursday or Friday? I hear it's pretty crazy on the weekends out there.
what are you going to do if you aren't in Sonoma?
Honestly I think wine country is pretty boring so I don't think it matters which day you go.Yes! If you can make it, I'd definitely like for you to join us. I have no clue where they're wanting to go to watch it, but it's on. If you can't make it, no biggie. I should be around all four days. I feel like I need tro do the wine thing for Ms. wacky. She's loves that stuff.
I thought you were watching the game w/ your buddy michicat Thursday?*

Jennifer Wong created this (Human) Wasteland Map from reported craps provided by DataSF. The playful poop map allows you to search by address to reveal see your chances of stepping in a turd. You can also search more broadly by neighborhood and the map will show you where poop’s been found, but unfortunately, about 4,000 data points from January to June of 2013 is all the information that has been made available so far. Wong says that heat map represents the entire data set and you can report new shits at the top of the page
I'm guessing that the rains cleaned the crap off the sidewalks

Not to be confused with an elopement, a destination wedding is one in which a wedding is hosted, often in a vacation-like setting, at a location to which most of the invited guests must travel and often stay for several days. This could be a beach ceremony in the tropics, a lavish event in a metropolitan resort, or a simple ceremony at the home of a geographically distant friend or relative.

Hi everyone,
Unfortunately, due to the rainy forecast, we've been forced to cancel our Be Mine cocktail party on Friday, February 6th. Although we're thrilled that San Francisco is finally getting some much needed rain, the timing couldn't have been worse for our outdoor party.
We'll still be waiving all adoption fees February 6th - 8th. Stop by either of our shelters this weekend and we'll help you find the purr-fect furry Valentine! Click here to view our adoptable animals.
Thanks for your understanding, and we look forward to seeing you at our next event!
Best,
Krista

Actual question, how much is San Francisco skewed by how small and affluent it is? Chicago and New York (and KC for that matter) have significant areas of the city that are shitty which drags the median rent down significantly. It seems like San Francisco calls their analogous areas "Oakland".

Serious question: why doesn't SF build some massive condo towers to house the hordes of boring tech people with money who want to live there? This could retain some of what's left of the city's character (assuming they're tearing down warehouses rather than victorians to build them), reduce demand for older housing, and liven up the small timey skyline. They really should have a chat with Vancover and Seattle about their more practical approaches to city planning. It seems pretty obvious that severe housing supply contraints are to blame here.Like lib said...they don't what to. This project was replacing a parking lot and tennis courts, went to a vote, and got destroyed:

Rejoice -- San Francisco Freedom Fest 2015 is here.
Thousands and thousands of our neighbors are (voluntarily) far away in a hot, dry inhospitable place full of white people on molly who are pitching their next app and/or plotting the complete colonization of the City by the Bay, all while waiting in line at the orgy tent.
I say bless them and their days of magical t?h?i?n?k?i?n?g? community making. It won't be long before they return to reclaim their love of billionaires, Bi-Rite, BMWs -- and the not-so-magical commodification of everything.
For now, the city is ours again.
Unfortunately, like most of Valencia Street, our beloved Clothes Contact is no more. But we are nothing if not resourceful, so get on your best, most outrageous San Francisco play clothes, everyone.

At least hipsters tried to be cool and attempted to care. There was a tenuous connection to the alternative, anti-corporate spirit of the ’90s, the angular styles of the ’80s, the free-spirited experimentalism of the ’60s (and drug overload of the ’70s), the fussy transcendence of the Beats. Now we’re simply succumbing to a blinding shade of bland, reflected in the latest trend of painting all our formerly calico Victorians dove grey and toxic taupe.
Sure, there are moments when it all comes flooding back — Outside Lands, say, when the streets run wild with mismatched patterns and festival-only hairdos. But if you spend 10 minutes talking on the street with some of the attendees, things start to get strange. They’re in sales, and want to turn you on to a new time-share app they’re prepping for second-round funding. They call you “bro” and talk about how hot all the chicks in matching floral crowns are this year. Or they pour out their heart to you about how lonely it is being the only female in their development pod, but they’re off to Mykonos next week for some fun on the beach, so things are good, and by the way, did you know a lot of gay guys go to Mykonos? IT’S SO FUN AND GAY THERE!
One of my best days in SF was on my last trip there. I rented a bike, and a buddy and I went on a thirty mile bike ride, which included riding along the Embarcadero. I'd like to do that again on my next trip out there.SF may be the best city in the world for year-round cycling

It's literally the coldest big city in America for June, July, and August. But it turns out most of our cities are ridiculously hot then so it's not bad.

the thing about this thread is that san francisco is identical to los angeles, in pretty much every way. I guess that san fran has a few more hills and trees (and mountain view is a pleasant small town when they don't run out of beer), but that's literally all that is different.

Don't stay at the Oakland airport Hilton. Basically, unless you're stating at the Marriott downtown or the Claremont in Berkeley just stay in San Fran. Bart is kind of confusing but works really well if it's close to where you want to go.
A bike ride across the golden gate bridge and ferry ride back is a great thing to do. Cable car rides are probably my favorite touristy thing to do in the city. Beach Chalet/Ocean Beach/Golden Gate Park makes a great afternoon or full day. And there are countless concerts, comedy shows, theater, hikes, great restaurants, sporting events, sex shows, wine tastings, etc. depending on the specific days you are here and what you like.
Great. We are into good food, any can't miss places?
so where is the LA thread then clamsy? or should this one just be changed to san francisco/LA things?
Stop moving to Oakland. Our landlords are greedy, unaccountable and vicious. They take every chance they can to raise rental costs. We can't afford to live here anymore. Maybe you don't understand, you bring all of your money and privilege and resources from New York, from LA, from Silicon Valley, we're not like you. We're blue collar, we're busted, we struggle to keep our heads above water, healthy food on the table, roofs over our heads. We're not start ups and cafes and gastropubs (WTF? Gastropub?) We're doughnuts and churches and liquor stores. We're community gardens and fried chicken. We know it's pretty here, it was in the 90s when you wouldn't have anything to do with us, so not hip and not San Francisco. It was in the 80s when you were afraid of us and our dangerous neighborhoods. We have yards and wide streets, old buildings that look like ships. You're turning our neighborhoods into Brooklyn and our freeway into LA. You're replacing our family neighborhoods with bad over manicured facial hair and fixed gear bicycles, four dollar cups of coffee and high end food trucks. Our landlords aren't responsible enough to handle your presence, your money, your ambivalence to how you affect the world around you. They see dollar signs, dream of becoming powerful real estate moguls, or at least have no qualms about taking as much as they can from whoever will give it. And you give it. You have it to give. You can't seem to love something for what it is, you need to leave your mark, possess, influence. We love what we are already, without you.
You can have San Francisco. It's already been destroyed.
Please stop moving to Oakland. Go home, go back to whatever place it was you already mumped up, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Palo Alto. Go back there. Stay there.

Stay there.

The gay man I work with screamed bloody murder and ran out of the room when a cockroach ran across our work area. I was elected to dispatch the terrifying monster.
I don't see the SF gay contingent able to handle that environment with ease. Perhaps a soothing decor upgrade?

What an amazing douchebag, and I bet there's clones of that guy all over SF.
So obviously their are a lot of gay men at my gym. There happen to be two very small skinny gay men that always use the lockers next to me. Anyway, today one of them had put on his jeans and was bending over to tie his shoes or something, and a guy (straight) says, "hey, nice pants!" and points out that they were completely split down the ass crack (and there was no underwear under the jeans). I mean, intentionally. The guy in the jeans looks befuddled and is like, "what? where? oh crap." the other gay guy was kind of like, "what, were those for the folsom street fair or something?" And the guy in the jeans was like "yeah, actually they were. I set them out just for that purpose and grabbed the wrong pair!" I left as they were trying to find him some underwear.
very san francisco-y
I watched the royals in the playoffs at a bar in SF got hit on CONSTANTLY by this guy that managed all the Prada stores in California. He a owned a condo in Pacific Heights! And then we meet his 20 year old Spanish boyfriend. (His husband was at work or something.) We bought reach other drinks, he offered me weed (which I declined because I had a girl scout event later that evening), but it was just so much fun.So obviously their are a lot of gay men at my gym. That is an awesome story.
The most decadent life style I can think of is to be a really affluent, attractive, gay man in San Fransisco. Wow.
What is the date, spracne? Will you have a car?
Well then I'd probably hit the beach chalet for brunch, drive through golden gate park, maybe stop to see the casting pools or bison, head to the gg bridge overlook and look around, drive from there to Alamo square to see the painted ladies (just drive by, don't stop), drive down Lombard on your way to a garage in north beach.
From there you can explore on foot north beach (obv), Chinatown, and fisherman's wharf. North beach has things like beat museum & city lights bookstore, dive bars full of European tourists, Italian restaurants, etc. You can also grab a sandwich at naked lunch or molinari's and take it to the top of one of the hills with great views and pretend you're Kerouac.
Chinatown is obviously Chinatown.
The wharf has wackys favorite animals and clam chowder and great views but is super touristy. This: http://www.museemechanique.org is kind of a quick free weird thing to do if you have time. You could also throw in a cable car ride to Chinatown which is easily my favorite tourist thing to do.
After that I'd probably go to brainwash cafe in soma for some open mic comedy: http://www.brainwash.com/index.html

precheck is fine, but if you don't have it and you are on United go to the international terminal security on the left (north) side, it's usually not as bad. If you take Bart exit to the front of the train and it's like right there.
I've flown a non-United domestic out of SFO flight like once and I think it was 3 years ago so no idea on terminal 1 or 2.
you'll be fine

Additionally if you're a museum guy, check the schedule cause on some Thursday evenings some of the science museums and stuff have like adult night and they have booze and stuff. My schedule has never allowed going to one but it sounds fun.

The ritual of the pour over is like a meditation: There’s no machine in your way, no flashing green lights, no electric power cords. Just you and a few simple tools. The final cup is reminiscent of one from a drip coffeemaker, but noticeably more delicate and complex. Observe the bloom, experience the first trace of coffee-drunk steam, notice how the spiral of the pour alters the final cup. This simple experience gets you in tune with your coffee.

Bay Area Transplant Living in KC for over a year now. I love the city, but am worried about gentrification... (self.kansascity)
submitted 8 hours ago by kthrowc
I never thought I would live in KC. I grew up in the Bay Area for most of my life, worked for the city in economic development. I watched most of my friends move away from the city because of the high standard of living, or just lived with their parents well into their late 20s to early 30s. I was lucky enough to get into law school and extend my stay in the bay area a bit longer. But one thing was for sure, I could not stay...
I lived in DC, Boston, Chicago, and NYC for a couple of years. But then I found KC. My god, what a lovely city. It absolutely blew my mind what a hidden gem this city is: the people, transit (I know its new, but still awesome that the street car is free, and the buses are the cleanest I've ever seen.), and the FOOD. OH MY GOD THE FOOD. This food rivals and beats out almost any other city. I applied for a summer job at a big firm about 3 years ago, got it, and they hired me after I graduate.
I am doing well for myself. My wife and I are able to afford our own apartment instead of living with my parents to save money. We are able to go out and live our lives, not counting pennies like we used to in SF. Get great food, awesome entertainment (sports, concerts, events, etc.), and getting involved with the community.
Then, I started to get worried from what I am seeing.
I started to see more and more young professionals moving in places that were "revitalized". I started to notice more and more people are getting "pushed out of the city" and how they are also being priced out to enjoy the city as much as these young people with money. I started to notice the term "economic development" being used to justify looking down at poor people, racial inequality, and investment in things that really do not help people, but rather just bringing wealth...
I started to notice gentrification.
I really fell in love with this city. I know how revamping places like downtown that were once ghost towns were really necessary to even bring people like me into the city. But as someone who lived in a place that literally priced me out, on top of working in economic development... it's starting to bother me that this is happening to a place like this.
I really just want to raise a major red flag about gentrification. KC is really up and coming, but promoting the wrong economic steps can really push natives out, deepen divides, and have the city lose its soul to wealth rather than keeping it for its people. I am a firm believer in community programs that help people over tax breaks for developers. This may be an unpopular opinion coming from an outsider, but I have witness and experienced the effects of gentrification, and noticed its signs here.
Please stay involved, listen to other people that do not have big-business interests, invest in people (not corporations), intensely study new development projects that actually meet the needs of everyone, and vote down any measure that may change the spirit of a neighborhood through out-pricing its people.
Thank you, KC.

I went to one of those places last week in kcYeah they made you buy a $25 card that was good for two sixteen ounce beers. It was like pouring gas where they showed how many ounces you'd poured and the cost. It didn't seem to add much value but who knows.
Was it any faster than the usual concessions stand?
What is the sideline club? Is it a private area or a big open bar like the one at the top of the lower level at the Sprint Center.
Another reason that we need to watch out for various foods on
campus is the increased availability of a wide variety of treats
containing marijuana. Everything from chocolate bars to gummy
bears are now being made with high dosages of THC. While
these “edibles” are now legal for adults, they remain extremely
dangerous and illegal for anyone under the age of 18.
I encourage all families to have some discussion about
peer pressure and saying no to anyone offering treats with
unknown ingredients.
Checking my knowledge...in the newsletter it states that “edibles” are illegal until 18. I thought it was 21 no?
New world...just trying to keep it straight.
(Not that I’m plotting a timeline to provide edibles to my kid!!)

Yes, of course. Cyclists are annoyed by most stimuli. But there is another irritant in this particular ointment. Scooters accelerate out of a stop faster than bicycles, but the top speed of most scooters is below that of all but the slowest bikes. So if you come out of a stop next to a cyclist, you immediately lurch forward and pass them, only to watch them pass you five seconds later. And it is annoying to pass someone in the bike lane.
I like The Atlantic, but it's not exactly my top choice to get the quick and dirty on a topic. So, I'm not gonna read that article until I have a long flight or something...

@michigancat I'm looking to road trip down the coast with my dog after labor day weekend, probably ending in SF by Thursday, or at least Friday and heading back mid-Sunday.
I know nothing. Hadn't even opened this thread because it started when I was away and got too big to catch up. Which would be better between these two free Hyatts as far as a base to go do stuff from? I'll obviously have my car but wouldn't want to drive anywhere except maybe to go see BeastMode in Oakland (and only if you recommended driving over some transit option) or maybe to do something nature-y with the dog.

She'll be good chilling in the hotel when I go to do non-dog stuff. Worked fine in Portland when I bailed for a Blazers game and I'll be able to test it over a longer trip here in a few weeks. And she's cool with any level of crowd at a beach or park so I'll check those you listed to see when's good to try to fit one or two in. Pretty low-maintenance all around.
Combo'n Beastmode with a hike and brewery would make taking the car out to go over that way worthwhile. Official KSU watch party is cool - seattle's are unintentionally hilarious - but so is finding an unofficial spot.
So as far as just finding bars and interesting stuff to wander through close to the hotel, Stockton's better?
After all that, forgot that the annual free night can only be for up to a category 4. Shitty Hyatt Centric at Fisherman's Wharf it is! I'm used to walking a lot.
probably more touristy than even Union Square and definitely harder to get around but IIRC that's a decent hotel. This is a wonderful bar that's real close: http://www.sweetiesartbar.com/ but there are plenty of other divey places when you get away from the Rainforest Cafe crap.

“This is an insane invasion of privacy to the folks who live next door. This is not how we do things in Berkeley,” said Commissioner Carrie Olson, who is Councilwoman Kate Harrison’s appointee to the board. The Green Cross had been in business in Noe Valley in 2004 before neighbors in the Fair Oaks area, tired of the parade of customers from all over town the dispensary was drawing, organized and drove him out before he’d been there two years. A plan to relocate to Fisherman’s Wharf was scuttled with “help” from then-Mayor Gavin Newsom, who’d yet to discover his deep appreciation for marijuana legalization.
Oakland’s cannabis permitting system was passed under an ordinance that has been amended and discussed for more than a year. Half of all permits the city will issue will go to people who qualify under the Equity Permit Program.
Those who qualify for equity permits are people convicted of a marijuana-related offense in Oakland, who earn an income less than 80 percent of the city average, or who have lived for 10 of the past 20 years in an Oakland neighborhood that saw a high number of cannabis arrests.

I can't really help much w/ dog friendly stuff, but Fort Funston or Baker Beach are good dog beaches. Dolores Park for an afternoon if the dog can handle crowds. BeastMode is easily accessible from Bart but dogs aren't supposed to ride. if you drive something like this would be a nice East Bay hike: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/lake-anza-wildcat-gorge-meadows-canyon-curran-trails and if you like beer you could hit up Fieldwork Brewery on the way back.
"Official" KSU watch parties in SF will probably be in the Richmond this year which is busable. Doubt they let dogs in the place though.
The Embarcadero Hyatt will be closer to the ferry building and water but you'll have a lot more options to do things at Stockton even if it's a little farther from transit. They're only like a mile or so apart (mostly flat) so not even that huge of a deal to walk from one to the other.

I actually drove past a sideshow in East Oakland at like 9 on a Saturday night this summer
shutting down public streets so piece of crap people can endanger other piece of crap people and non-piece of shits too is probably hated by many races:cyclist:
it’s really too bad that IR wasn’t from an ac-130 gunship so they could have cratered the entire area in and around the “sideshow”

Though Apple stores have been targeted from the North Bay to the South Bay, San Francisco stores, which have uniformed officers onsite, have not been recently hit.

I don't really understand why someone would feel entitled to live somewhere they can no longer afford to live. At the same time, I'm not trying to get into a huge debate about it, because whatever . . .It's a really interesting discussion. I used to have a similar view to you but have definitely become more sympathetic over time. A lot of folks displaced pretty much have to leave the area completely, which would kind of suck if you grew up in the neighborhood or were raising kids or had any sort of social circle in place. It isn't like these people can move to a shittier SF neighborhood, they have to move to at least Stockton or something.

I'm eating sushi at a place on Kansas street in potrero hill. This neighborhood looks like how the movies show SF
WTF man
Portrero is a very "locals only" neighborhood in that there's really no reason for anyone to go there unless there's a show at Bottom of the Hill (rare, because that place kind of sucks)
Thee Parkside and Connecticut Yankee are good bars close by (unless Parkside has a show)
Also I think Hayes Valley or Lower Haight are more stereotypical SF movie ish but that's probably just because I go there more often

That's a great thing to do but potentially problematic if you take a route that's too hilly. PA has nice ridiculously expensive homes but not a whole lot interesting going on

When you wander into Manny’s at 16th and Valencia, everything is chill. It’s a big space. And it’s crowded. People are working on projects, sipping $1.75 cups of coffee, or reading the literature they can purchase in-house from an adjunct of Dog-Eared Books located in the store (curated titles from Franz Fanon, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Howard Zinn and many others for sale).
This space feels casual and accessible. That’s the idea. Owner Manny Yekutiel, in fact, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with United to Save the Mission, a coalition of more than a dozen neighborhood nonprofits and activist groups, to ensure the “community” is copacetic with his “community space.”
The Mission anti-gentrification activists wanted a “bicultural, bilingual environment for Mission families” with bilingual signage here. And that happened. They wanted Yekutiel to hire bilingual staff that “reflects the availability of qualified applicants in the local community,” and the staff here is now heavily composed of local people of color (many are also LGBTQ, like Yekutiel). United to Save the Mission called for “moderate price points” — and not only is the coffee a buck seventy-five, but Tecate runs you two bucks and a meal starts at six. The food here, in fact, is prepared on-site by Farming Hope, a nonprofit employing homeless, formerly incarcerated, and low-income community members — and they earn all the food revenue.
“Boycott Manny’s and its ‘woke-washing’ of the Mission,” blared an email sent Dec. 5 to media outlets by “The Lucy Parsons Project,” a self-described “radical black queer direct action group fighting anti-blackness in the Bay Area.”
“Manny’s as a gentrifying wine-bar, cafe and fake ‘social justice’ space in the Mission District, will only accelerate the raising of rents and the displacement of Black, Latinx, disabled and trans/queer people in the Mission,” the letter continued. “Additionally, the proprietor of Manny’s, Emmanuel Yekutiel, has unequivocally espoused racist, Zionist, pro-Israel ideals that we will not tolerate or accept in our community. … We will not tolerate gentrifiers and Zionists attempts at invading and destroying our community through ‘woke-washing’!!”
This is probably more California things, but saw an article that said that while middle class and below flight from California is a very real thing, wealthy influx into California is also a very real thing.
It would appear that California is on a trajectory to potentially (if not already) have the greatest gap between the have's and the have not's in the United States.
I suppose current California policy will allow the have's to be able to take advantage of cheap labor for domestic purposes as well as constructing their various palatial mansions and gentrification projects for further displacement of middle and lower classes.
Tech/startup lifestyle things have been around so long that I can't help but feel that people into them must be sort of obliviously uncool. Do people still enthusiastically talk about things like how their software is going to change the world?

Curry spent extra time packing up his locker before leaving. Then he stopped to say goodbye to every security guard, usher and custodian who worked there. Many of them won't be working in the new arena in San Francisco next year. The choice was given to all employees, but the new commute has proven prohibitive to many.
mc, is this due to lack of transit options, or the expense of existing ones, or the additional time they'd require or something else?Probably mostly time and cost. You can do Bart and Muni to the new arena from Oakland but it won't be quick. Also late night Bart doesn't run very oftenQuoteCurry spent extra time packing up his locker before leaving. They tried to build the arena in a much more convenient SF location (for transit) but it got shut down. Shortsighted of the Warriors to not have implemented something that could've made it possible for their workers to keep their jobs, even if that was setting up a private commute/transit option or committing money to expanding the existing public options. It might not have mattered if they were en route to a 5th 'ship next year, but in what will be a more sterile atmosphere than they assumed, what they've done to Oakland is going to finally get some attention.

I've thought about this, I think San Jose might work where the Sharks play. But probably not, because the warriors are only popular because they're good. It was super easy to get cheap tickets five years ago.

Well yeah, but that's the case for most sports teams. I was thinking more like market size and tv/radio rights, etc., and how Oakland and SF had their own baseball and football teams. I guess the more I read about this, it feels more like a franchise relocation vs. just going into a new arena in town, and they've really escaped blowback at least nationally.

Raiders are leaving (and have tarped the upper deck to reduce capacity the last few years) and A's support kind of sucks.
It's more like a new arena than a franchise relocation. They might have a few bitter fans but most people genuinely pissed about them leaving Oakland were probably priced out of season tickets a long time ago. There's a lot of "this is going to be a pain to get to" and "season ticket prices are insane" but the warriors are way too popular to have any significant percentage of fans bitter about the nice

But on the 12th floor, reality set in quickly. My cardigan did nothing to protect me from the sporadic gusts, leaving me searching for a walled-off section of the bar. I stood directly under a narrow panel of a heat lamp and gazed out at the city skyline — err, actually the sluggish commute traffic on Interstate 80 heading to the Bay Bridge.

I used to want to live there, but now I change my vote to La Jolla or something. You know, on the list of places that I would never actually live but consider living if I were to win the lottery.
Now I’m just a simple country boy, It why would you not want to live in Hawaii?Too far away from family for me. Kauai would be the best and healthiest place in the world to live other than that tho.
Fine for false report? OK
Fine for "race-based" false report? Probably not OK under First and Fourteenth Amendments.
Why not just make it a fine for making a false report? Wouldn't that subsume race-based false reports?

I'd be pretty surprised if there isn't already a law on the books for a penalty for filling a false report.

I'm sure it can already be prosecuted, yes. The wording sounded more like a civil citation, like a speeding ticket or something (Imagine showing up to contest your racism ticket and being all like, "But is it really racism???"). But I'm not going to attempt to try to understand what they mean, because SF. Apparently they're also talking about diverting police funds to the black community, calling it reparations. That brings up an interesting question: Is the concept of reparations (in the form of redirecting tax revenues on the basis of race) constitutional? On its face, it would seem the answer is "no," though I don't know who would have standing to sue. I don't think taxpayers can generally challenge such things. Perhaps a police officer whose position is eliminated due to budget cuts tied directly to the loss of those funds, if that could be proven? California laws make my brain hurt.

I'm reading this now and it's great. She does a nice job communicating the vibe of SF and startups/tech.I'll probably read this.QuoteUncanny Valley? is a rare first-person glimpse into high-flying, reckless startup culture at a time of unchecked ambition, unregulated surveillance, wild fortune, and accelerating political power. With wit, candor, and warmth, Anna deftly charts the tech industry’s shift from self-appointed world savior to democracy-endangering liability, alongside a personal narrative of aspiration, ambivalence, and disillusionment.

Took place in San Francisco, so pretty germane to the thread. Written more for beginners, not that insightful. Heavier on summary, lighter on quirky, detailed examples.
Brands are featured prominently, but she uses zero brand names. "Australian work boots," "The cat octopus company," etc. At times, trying to figure them out was the most enjoyable aspect of the book.
Some of her descriptions made me smile. Like, "we all showed up for the meeting in the board room, everyone dressed like they were ready to traverse a glacier."

Do they know that the new development will be "affordable housing?" Seems like a super pricey place for a developer to invest in affordable housing, doesn't it?

The development itself won’t be. The idea is that increasing the amount of home supply in the area helps the supply/demand ratio that makes the market so unaffordable.

Well crap, then why aren't they all up in arms trying to get every building in the area condemned via eminent domain and soviet style sky scrapper housing blocks put in their place?
I've never heard the Karl thing beforeI thought I mentioned it. People thought it was really cute and funny and it was usually pretty awful
i don't think victorian houses existing is the cause of the housing shortage in SF. but maybe it is!
It's kinda shitty that people get displaced, but a lot of this comes across to me as "I want to be able to live wherever I want whatever my income." And I don't have much sympathy for that because if you're entertaining the idea of living in San Francisco, you could probably afford to live in 99% of the places in the US. That's not enough choice for you???

Moving is cheap. And there are a lot of places a Guatemalan person could and should live before sf.
the elderly and poor people with families and tight-knit immigrant communities.
it's also difficult to have a quality city without cooks, dishwashers, custodians, and teachers, and the like.
the elderly and poor people with families and tight-knit immigrant communities.
Are there really many of these people left? Gentrification has been an issue there for forever, so I (perhaps falsely) assume that they're all basically gone already. I also always see the housing complaints coming from young, white, college educated people, naturally.

why do you think so many end up in SF?
You live in a fantasy world, michigancat
this may be a misinterpretation based on how the different colors pop on the map, but it looks like sf might be fairly unique among american cities in that the black population is the least segregated racial/ethnic group. also interesting how there seems to be asymmetrical overlap between the groups. with hispanics being like universal blood donors or something in that they kinda mix with everyone somewhere.

yes, there's still a lot of those people left. Rent control is a factor for some but there are still pretty dense pockets of Latinos in the Mission, Filipinos in Soma (although fewer of them are immigrants), and poorer Chinese in Chinatown. (Chinese are all over the city but there's a lot of wealth outside of Chinatown). They've pretty much displaced all of the black community to the SE corner of the city and a few housing projects but it's dwindling every day.

Tend to agree with Pete, Chum and Kim (to the surprise of nobody, i'm sure). if you're renting in an oppressively expensive city, the most obvious and easiest solution seems to be "move to where rent is cheaper."
;) aside, I lived in Chicago for years and heard a lot of people bitching about how expensive housing was -- and they were right. Yeah I get how it's easy for people who grew up in KS and chose to live in like the cheapest most undesirable cities in the US to think that way.

yeah I think a big difference is working class people can still afford to live in Chicago. I think SF has a $15 minimum wage but it doesn't really matter if you can't find a 2 BR under $2k (I looked and only one of these wasn't actually just a room)
compare the same scale to the north side of chicago
also (you would know better), but Chicago still has places that haven't been gentrified. like the south side is just too big (and dangerous) for the people complaining about rent in Lincoln Park to invade and I feel like the places becoming more expensive were pretty yuppie-ish to begin with and less about yuppies forcing out poor latinos. (again, defer to your expertise on this). Like chum alluded to, there's not much space left in SF to gentrify other than small pockets who are clinking and have pressure from all sides. Oakland is seeing a lot of folks displaced too but I think East Oakland will take a while. (Historically black West Oakland is too convenient to SF to not gentrify)
“no, don’t make this neighborhood nicer, safer, and more desirable” is a weird argument.
DIDNT REALIZE THE FINAL STEP IN GENTRIFICATION WAS MOVING TO A RURAL TOWN WHERE EVERYBODY THINKS YOURE A DICK BECAUSE YOU THINK THEY ARE STUPID.
When did we all go from "omg I'm so broke" to "omg we're all buying houses in grass valley now"
What is Ukrainian village like now?Haven’t spent a ton of time right there, but I think actively gentrifying? It seems fairly nice. It’s not a very big area
i dunno what sort of % to put on it, but if i had to bet on one person to replace harris as ca's junior senator, i think i'd pick breed. She'd probably do way better at the state level

No More Tech Office Spaces In The Mission
Join the battle for racial equity by telling the Board of Supervisors the development of 2300 Harrison into a larger Tech Hub will harm our community!
*2300 Harrison Street is a tech-office project that will directly connect with an existing tech office building that was illegally converted to offices in the late 90s. The two buildings combined will create nearly 100,000 sq. ft. of tech offices.
The project gained approval by the Planning Commission by exploiting a state density bonus law, meant for housing, not offices, by building a tiny amount of housing on top of a huge office building in order to abuse the intent of the law to maximize profits.
This is like dumping a block of the Financial District into the Mission's working-class Latino neighborhood.
As many as 650+ tech workers could be added along with 24 units of housing are proposed for this enormous influx of upscale workers! The project will only cause more displacement and hyper-gentrification. They propose only 6 moderately-affordable housing units to house our threatened Mission families.
Communities of color are severely underrepresented in the tech industry and this project contains NO EQUITY COMPONENTS to provide opportunity for our low-income and working-class communities of color.
Projects like these continue to displace our most vulnerable neighbors and must be stopped. We've already lost 8,000 Latinos from the Mission!!!
Add this event to your calendar -- and to join us August 18th at 3pm to call in and demand that the Supervisors support our right to equitable planning for our community. They should deny this office project unless it is completely redone to meet the needs of our low-income and Latino community in this time of dire crisis.
Additional information will be posted as we get closer to the date

Common ground with the longtime residents? I can see how they might feel equally threatened by yimbys and nimbys. Either could price them out.Yeah, poorer long term residents.
I can see how they could incorrectly view developers as their enemy, which would make the nimbys their allies.
The author of the book suggested that tech company workers and their busses were incorrectly viewed as the enemy a few years back and that the focus has since shifted to housing. I thought that was interesting.
The tech busses were/are about housing.
The tech busses were/are about housing.
I worded that poorly. The author said the tech workers were wrongly blamed for housing price increases and that the people who fought against housing development deserved more of that blame.

Interesting map on how Prop 13 impacts property tax. (Prop 13 caps property tax increases and only is reassessed when a property is sold.) Basically if you got in early you're golden and if you didn't good luck.

If a family member owns a house that you inherit after their death is your tax rate reassessed or do you still get to keep paying their super low rate?
Because of a ballot measure passed in 1986, California is the only state in the country where children get to inherit their parents’ low property taxes on the homes they leave behind. That’s why you may have heard that Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges is paying only $5,700 a year in property taxes on an oceanside Malibu home his parents bought in the 1950’s. Like the vast majority of those who benefit from this inheritance tax break, Bridges doesn’t live in the Malibu home–he and his siblings rent it out, for $15,000 a month.
there's a ballot measure on this year's ballot to roll back the tax break on inherited properties unless the heirs live in the house. no idea if it's likely to pass or not. It's kind of a weird one, it also lets old people carry their assessment to a new place more

Realtors are very much in favor of it which probably means it will lead to higher property values on average.
I don't know. Except that it’s not. I’m not sure what kind of mental gymnastics you guys did to arrive at that conclusion but it’s pretty impressive. If I owned a standalone home in sf I sure as crap wouldn’t want any large structures being built next to my home and it wouldn’t have anything to do with racism.
Explain to me, with facts, how you came to that conclusion

i think watching how the the california to texas migration changes the demographics in texas will be interesting
My anecdotal evidence (Idaho, Colorado, Arizona) suggests that most locals despise Californians when their influx becomes noticeable. Then when housing prices rise, and politics shift, the natives really ramp up the dislike.
that's funny because none one is really from california

lol from the "San Francisco Remembered" groupQuoteLast night the School Board erased my childhood. They voted to re name 42 schools in San Francisco. So Abraham Lincoln will no longer exist after April, 2021.
The Lincoln renaming thing is pretty wild, I've heard of that in other places out here too.
The name Shawnee Mission derives from the Shawnee Methodist Mission, a mission to the Shawnee tribe, founded in 1830 in present-day Wyandotte County, Kansas by the Methodist church. The mission was moved to what is now Johnson County in 1839.
The Lincoln renaming thing is pretty wild.
The Lincoln renaming thing is pretty wild.
weirder to me the removing of names intrinsically associated with california history. they don't want a california with schools named after "mission" or "presidio"? and i'd love to hear an explanation for alamos' offense. allergies, i guess.
Here’s one that’s beyond belief: Mission High School, named for Spain’s California missions, and, according to the Names Committee, “all California missions are sites of slavery and colonization.” The school district also has an Alamo Elementary, and the name “Alamo,” which means “cottonwood” in Spanish, has the more nefarious association of “Remember the Alamo.” And that phrase was “a call for vengeance against Mexicans.”
With the school renaming, Bernie Privelige, and the school board saying at least kids are getting cultural education because they're with their families more, it's been quite a 2021 for SF Public schools.
Also, the school board president might but be this, but a lot of folks use the school board as a stepping stone to city supervisor (like city council) and so you get a lot of political ladder climbers who really don't give a crap about schools

How good are the public schools in SF? On one hand I assume they are like most big city school districts and terrible but on the other hand property prices are ridiculous so maybe only rich people live in the city and send their kids to school there?

The Palace Hotel is p great if you do decide to stay in the Financial District.I'd consider that Union Square but it's basically the border.

I know better than to fight you on this, but it's def the Financial District.

Is the Salesforce building in the Financial District? Because I took a very brief and brisk stroll there every time I stayed at the Palace (of which there were many).
Weird. I guess when you pass the third dispensary during that brief stroll it ceases to be the Financial District?

Are you familiar with the concept of borders?
Google actually puts that hotel in SoMa so you are both wrongI hedged, I said it's what I would "consider" Union Square. Like, Westfield City Center Mall is very much Union Square (in almost everyone's book) but is "SOMA" on google maps.
I'm sorry, but if I can walk fewer than 5 minutes to get to the heart of the Financial District, then that hotel is in the Financial District.

Salesforce Tower isn't the heart of the financial district
would you see the same about a place 5 minutes from the tenderloin? no, you wouldn't
Thanks for the tips. There’s a Hilton there for $140 a night with a rooftop pool/bar that overlooks the Bay. I’m sure Napa will rape us and we’ll barely be at the hotel on that Sunday, so I think we’ll probably go that route. 10 minute Uber drive to the Chiefs bar. That's basically Chinatown and North Beach! Good bars in North Beach
Lotta shitty bars in North Beach too. But lots of bars

We just want to lay our heads somewhere. Uber seems cheap from everywhere from there, but I honestly don’t know. I’ve been one time and her aunt had us in some fancy place downtown where they had the wedding and eventually met Mich.Pretty sure it was the Plaza! The Hilton will be fine.

Richmond Republic. Nice neighborhood to get away from tourists
https://www.facebook.com/groups/562117461636487
worth noting that the Richmond has the reputation of having all the Chinese restaurants that Chinese folks eat at instead of Chinatown. Go get some good food while you're out there!
in the last couple of months i spent brief amounts of time in seattle and the bay area. they both struck me as basically failed cities. hard to understand how they've let themselves descend into such states.

sys, that was on you for not spending those brief amounts of time boating around with drinks and dogs.
In all seriousness was it drug use and homelessness or something else?

definitely homeless everywhere was a big part. plus ugly rundown buildings, poor maintenance of public and private buildings and lands, non-functional/poorly functioning public transit, traffic and at the same time everything was super expensive.
like how the eff can everything cost a million dollars but there's no money to pick up trash, clean a bathroom or staff a bart/amtrak office? it's inexplicable.
just seemed like really shitty places to live.

I guess I don't get why people act like this is new? It's been incredibly wealthy with people doing drugs in the streets at all hours of the day in certain neighborhoods for a long-ass time, long before Chesa Boudin or whoever is getting blamed for things like this.https://twitter.com/ZaidJilani/status/1645541366162681859
Where were those tweets when the Brookline, MA store closed a year ago?
That said it's just a weird neighborhood and has been for years. The city gave too many incentives to tech companies to move offices there that are now empty. I used to go to one on fourth Street about a mile away that was also in a pretty shitty neighborhood but there was way more housing nearby and it's still open. There's a Costco less than a mile away.

this thread alone is ten years old.

And the thing about the Mission is that their are rough ridin' crazy crackheads roaming the streets 24-7 (in front of nice restaurants). I know people that live in Oakland that tell me the only time they've felt nervous in the entire Bay Area was in the Mission.
Yes but why are people like Zaid Jilani commenting with surprise now when things like this happen
what are the preexisting beliefs?
good thread that sums up how i view sf, except it doesn't fully express my absolute befuddlement at how the people that live there could allow this to happen under their watch.

i think la, sf, portland and perhaps to a slightly lesser degree seattle stand apart categorically from other u.s. cities in terms of homeless encampments and open drug use.
Yes and also New York has a right to shelter law that helps a ton. San Francisco also isn't helped by most of the nonsense going on a couple blocks from the largest concentration of tourist hotels.i think la, sf, portland and perhaps to a slightly lesser degree seattle stand apart categorically from other u.s. cities in terms of homeless encampments and open drug use.
year-round weather is a big factor
most of the crap that these twitter folks talk about happens in a pretty small area and doesn't impact many wealthy people. Most of the city is still pretty great (but expensive).
Not sure what to do about the drug markets, but they have needed to build way more housing all over the Bay for years.

I'm just joshing' ya Rusty but that post was worded pretty LOL. Like "uh good grief guys you're overreacting. The rich elite are fine."Yeah it was in response to the tweet about how the place is so wealthy it's wild that there's crime. Obviously the poor folks of San Francisco shouldn't live like they do! You could say the same about the entire country!
i'm pretty surprised to see nyc that high on the list, but otherwise it's about what i'd expect. homelessness is a west coast problem.I think it's both the type of homelessness and the number of beds at play here. Plus a lot more I'm sure.
He thinks it's funny too

now I don’t know what willy is tripping about but it’s funny af
Fwiw Westfield is exiting all US properties
but i do agree that the two hotels that went down last week because convention planners don't think anyone would voluntarily spend a weekend in sf is a stronger signal.Eh I think the hotels have a lot to do with no one working on offices in downtown SF (so no reason to visit) while the retail is more about crime and reputation hit associated with the areA
sf could enter a death spiral very quickly if the tax base that the city depends on erodes past an inflection point that begins compounding its problems. how do you fix it?It won't go into a death spiral but I'm not sure how best to fix the legitimate problems without major societal changes. Instead of a death spiritual I think a lot of the tech bros leave and fairly well to do creative director hipster type dudes gladly take their place at slightly lower prices

Ok Governor, we've landed. Where would you like to go? "I'd really like to see a man crap in the street and if possible, can he be adding whitish chowder to the drugs he is already doing as well"?
Also one thing is certain: there is no sidewalk defecation or drug use in FLORIDA

At the risk of of Pitting this thread up, I just can't rough ridin' understand how people can watch and hear speeches like this and think, "man, this guys speaks my language". This is what I hear during speeches like this, "if you have an ounce of intelligence, you may as well turn this off, this one is to rile up the dumbasses". Its just unfortunate that 99% of their speeches are to rile up the dumbasses. Its so weird.
