Hopper
« on: January 16, 2014, 12:04:47 PM »
Those of you HBBIQers, tell us about Hopper.  Saw some pretty sick dunks at the pre-season scrimmage on news, but know nothing about his game.  Should we be excited about him?  How will he fit with Foster/Thomas/Wesley?

Also, any info on Bolden?  Thanks studs.

It will be interesting to see how Edwards fits. He was the best player on a bad team at Maine. He was a very inefficient scorer, below average shooter, pretty good at assists, steals, and drawing fouls.

Bolden is an unknown, he played in 4 games at GT and literally his only stats was missing one shot. He was a 3 star recruit with supposed offers from Georgetown, Baylor, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, VCU, and VT out of high school.

Edwards shot less than 30% from 3. But according to everyone there, he passed the eye test at our midnight madness, or whatever we call it.

A year off is the best opportunity for Hopper to achieve his potential. As a guard, when you shoot under 30% from behind the arc your first two years in college, there is something fundamentally wrong with your shot. A year off gives the coaches a chance to fix that, and it gives him time to get accustomed to his new mechanics. He's an above average athlete and if he can shoot anywhere in the 30s from behind the arc next year, then he'll be able to utilize the stronger parts of his offensive game because teams will have to at least respect his threat from the outside. If he continues to struggle from the outside, then teams will sag off of him and he'll be relegated to being a role player most likely. Bolden? No clue. I don't think anyone knows anything about where he's at or where he's going as a basketball player, other than the staff.

Different area code, so it doesn't count.  Laid out and explained pretty well in the hit classic movie Road Trip.

Its hard to know how he'll translate, but its fairly reasonable to hope he can be (at least) some sort of lesser version of Deandre Kane. And before you think the comparison is ridiculous I give you this:

Why not? Let's ramp these expectations up a notch. Just look at that comparision.

(granted, Maine was much worse than Marshall.)

i think practicing a full year with the team you're going to be on helps a ton, as opposed to showing up in the summer prior. this is obvious, but worth noting.

Man, that FT%

Also, it seems like basically anyone on the bench should beat that 3pt%.

Yes, and an expectation of better shooting is reasonable. If you are the best player on a bad team, you are going to take a lot of bad shots and have defensive game plans designed to only stop you every game. Playing alongside Foster, Gip, etc. that simply will not be the case.

I have heard Edwards has improve his shoot quite a bit since leaving Maine. He will give us another guy that can really get in the lane.

Wait, why was Kane able to play immediately after transferring?

He probably already graduated.

I guess I was thrown off since _FAN only posted 2 years of his 4 at Marshall.

I just chose two years just for comparison's sake because their last two years were very similar. Kane did shoot a little better as a freshman (he redshirted one year as well).

Wait, why was Kane able to play immediately after transferring?

24 going on 25.

He graduated, but supposedly there was turmoil at Marshal and their coach didn't exactly ask him to return for his senior season.

Thanks for the info.  Watching the Freshmen this year has gotten me excited for next year.  Hopefully Hurt can bring some immediate help to the post.
