Also, what excuse can I use to get a week off in between old job and new job?

i think you might be a rough ridin' idiot.

I think you might be a meany face.

But seriously, I need an excuse.  The HR departments will talk to each other.  They're conniving.

Oh, please.  Your last day with your current employer is between you and your current employer.  And the same for your first day with your new employer.  And you're entitled to that day off.  What you do with it is your business.

Don't tell them an excuse.  Tell them you want to start on whatever date you want, then tell the others that you are done one week before that.

Another question: If I put in two weeks notice tomorrow, that will put my last day on March 22, which is the first day of the NCAA tourney.  I requested that day off like two months ago when I bought tickets.  Is it still cool to use that vacation day on March 22 even though it's my last day at my current job?   :dunno:

It should be ok with your employer, but I would go ahead and work that day. You should always try to leave a job gracefully.

Depends on the employer.  My last employer often escorted ppl out the day the gave their notice for security reasons and simply paid them for those two wks.

Even if their offer is 30% over what you make now, ask for more, you'll never get an easier raise

This would be great.  Super great.  But I don't think it is going to happen.  They'll just ignore me for two weeks.

This is what I was told by a couple of people that I trust.  I've never made a counter offer before, but they made it sound like I'd be an idiot not to make a counter offer.

If they have already offered you the job, all they will do is say that they are firm on their offer. You almost surely won't lose the offer.

Then ask for additional vacation.  You will need the extra days off to put all that extra $$$ to good use.

I said my brother was too manly.  He likes guns and jets and boom boom things.

I am definitely not too manly for anything.  Also, I want to be your friend.

Also, I'm still confused about what kind of counter offer I should make, if any.  Cash?  Vacation days?  Both?  Neither?

Your going to need to go to the store first prior to making the counter offer.

You could ask for a signing bonus.

About the brother part or the "I want to be your friend" part.  Both are sort of sketchy.

Great.  Another option to consider.  crap.

I'm not doing so well with this decision.  I think I'll just turn the whole thing down.

I negotiated horribly. Basically just asked for $5k more, couldn't come up with a reason when asked, got $2k more. Can't hurt to ask.

You need to put things in their terms. Want 10% more? How are you going to provide 10% of value to the company. Sell them on your skills.

This is good advice. Don't ask for more. Tell them you're worth more. And don't be all chicken crap nervous about it. They're not gonna take the job away. I hate people that don't negotiate salary. They ruin the curve for everyone else.
