Floundering Ames-lessly down the stretch; ISU ADV
« on: January 20, 2015, 08:22:38 PM »

A huge missed opportunity. Lots of credit for this team and coaches for putting themselves into position at the under 4; lots of disappointment for not making plays after that to finish with a win. A heavy reliance on jump shots to make possession winning plays wasn't enough as Foster didn't hit shots. We also had a few attempts by Edwards going into the paint, but they missed wildly.

Still, the problems with oboarding were huge (ISU 31.6% to 20.0%) and not making 3s (28.6% for the game, 1/6 in the 2nd). We all knew we'd probably have to outscore ISU to win it. I was honestly hoping for 1.05 PPP (which we got) but we gave up 1.14 and that's tough to beat in Ames. Also, ISU played about 3-4 minutes of really hard defense and that was enough (but they don't do that often).

Now get back home and get wins, which the Cats will do if they continue to play with effort and intensity like tonight. Get the home wins and losses like tonight don't hurt you badly, though we will have to steal another road win or two from good Big 12 teams (while winning @TCU and @Tech).

Not only was ORs the key but we gave up 21 2nd chance pts and I think we only had 6-8 pts

2 things to be encouraged by.....
1) I thought our offense is looking better. After the dismal start vs Baylor, we have 124 pts and only 16 TOs in our last 108 poss. That's 1.15 PPP and 14.8 TO% in the last almost 70 minutes of game action. We moved better and our energy level much better than it has been.

2) we have made 49 of 60 FTs the past 3 games .... 41.7 FTR in those 3

@KellisRobinett: oscar Weber on late misses: "That goes to me. I have got to make sure we have stuff in there so we can get open looks down the stretch."

We miss DJamer in late shot clock ball screen action. Our bigs are not effective rolling to the basket. Man I hope he gets healthy next year.

It becomes tough with the limitations we have at PG right now. It would've been nice to have Nigel because he at least can hit a shot like vs Baylor.

It isn't just a limitations at point guard it is that fact out of our 1s,2s,3s we only have one reliable shooter. Honestly want to see some Jevon, Nigel and Marcus line ups. I think Nigel is one of the guys that can bring shooting. Don't think Jevon played that bad. Had two turnovers due chemistry issues, that would of created offense. On that inbound play that was equally on Jevon and Nino. Nino need show earlier. oscar should of also took a timeout. Complete team failure.  Jevon played way too much.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

3 home games and at Tech in our next 5 games.    We gotta carry this effort over into the home games with OSU and WV.

Yeah, I'm not sure about this one. Nino was fantastic.

22 points. 8 boards. 4 assists. 3 steals. He's our 2nd best player right now and maybe better than that. No, he's not the guy to get shots down the stretch like Marcus, but Nino is fighting his tail off.

OSU and WV are hard match ups. They are good at turning people over. We are good at turning over.

I'm getting a little sick of people acting like Nino is playing above his head and should have been some also-ran. He was a 4* recruit who had a list better than most KSU ballers since Huggins took over.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Nigel was only 5 for his last 25 on 3s before he hit the one late vs Baylor.  Jevon does play too much, but we don't need any Jevon Nigel Foster lineup in there. Wes is playing much better and Edwards had a solid game 2night.  I'd like to see Nigel get his shot back and get more playing time. Until he does, expect Jevon to still get a bulk of the minutes at PG

True, but OSU doesn't play great eFG% defense and gives up a high FT rate. WVU plays even worse eFG% defense and fouls like crazy. And neither has beaten anyone decent on the road. The way we are playing, these are two we should get.
