I think the talent has everything to do with it. You don't usually start to slide downhill until you reach your peak and Timberlake just keeps getting better.

He adapted very well. But you also don't see JT getting in trouble with drugs, DUIs, etc. The biggest scandal he ever had was the Superbowl thing.  He just kept a public image of a cool dude who likes to do cool dude things vs trying to shock the public.

Nope. He was still rocketing up the mountain at that point. I think he's at the summit now, but he's old and mature enough to find a gradual path back down rather than just sliding down face first.
