That was my only point. Mocat dropped it in here like "case closed" and walked away and I'm just like lol at that comparison. There's plenty of ways our tax dollars are being wasted out there, but i'm fine with making transportation easier around the metro. I loved working and living downtown, but most of the time i've off I-35 and/or the 435 loop.
That was the point of the tweet (I believe).... wacky cat, who represents a pretty average KC metro resident, had no problem with that project because it saves him/her a couple minutes during the heaviest rush hour....but the starter streetcar line had vote after vote and intense media and public debating over....even outside of the impacted taxpayer or user.

Building highways is very expensive. We should be cautious on just expanding lanes because one to two hours a day you have to go 30mph for 2 miles.

It's not just congestion, it's age and safety. K-10 is (probably) going to be the next major project, it's well over capacity and becoming quite a safety problem.
We lived off K-10 in Eudora growing up and my dad had to tend to two major crashes from that shitty highway. One of the kids died while he was helping him get out of their car. Told my dad he was at his parents and just trying to get back to school. Thee worst!

It's pretty crazy that we've evolved into a society where we think it is reasonable to live a long distance from where we work with no convenient transit and then base everything around that.

i just thought it was in an interesting look into federal funding for trans projects; obviously the two projects are incomparable in terms of scale. but if you had asked me how much federal $ went into the 435/k10 thing i would have guessed much lower than $600M

So it looks like the gateway handles 200k-250k drivers a day, the streetcar gets like 2 million a year right?

I am definitely pro-streetcar but what a terrible argument lol

what's the argument?

A lot of things can change in a persons life from the time they've decided where to live and work.

Obviously. The problem in KC is we've scattered all the residents and jobs so transit is tough to implement....and that pushes us to spend 300M to rebuild an interchange.

It's expensive.

Definitely. If you can afford a car.

It's also very expensive to maintain.

Are you trying to say the streetcar helps people who can't afford a car get to work? It's a 40 minute walk that was already served by busses. Come on phil.

i think they should rip out all major highways in the metro and replace them with streetcar lines.  i wonder how much that would cost to build and maintain.  probably cheap.  doesn't matter, it'd be better.
also, slyin james should make a new law that mandates that people live within walking distance to their job.  each person's unique walking distance would be determined by their overall fitness.
slyin hams would be forced to live in city hall because his walking distance is 10 feet.

Was not in any way trying to say that. Just talking the freeway system on it's own that you described as convenient.

Yup.
Our society thinks its reasonable to live long distances from where we work because people generally like to live in reasonably priced spaces that aren't the size of shoeboxes - especially if they have families.

Happy to help solve that humdinger.

Hot take alert: City Hall knowingly misleads city residents by claiming that the only people who have to pay the increased tax in the newly adopted TDD are those whole live or operate a business in the district!

Also because the government has been subsidising it for years, mostly to the benefit of white people. Kind of like the streetcar!

subsidized through regressive fuel taxes and you have no way to substantiate who benefits the most from the interstate highway system unless you're just of the saying that money rolls up hill, which it does, unlike crap.  but it's really a lot more than wacky driving down 435 to his office and boom, benefit.
