Saw the ketocatconvo.. 3rd day here.  Is tracking macros along with keeping under 15-20 carbs important?

yes unless you are one of the hippies above.

macros to track your fat ratio. 80% cals from fat initially, then you can relax to maybe 65% when fully metamorphosed.

max carbs depends on your body size, comp, and activity level

some people are about to come in and tell you no and trick you into atkinsing because they are in the pocket.

my research is based on many hours of podcast listening and several blog posts.

I'm doing a 30 day weight loss challenge right now. Started at 207. I want to get down to 185. I'm halfway through and I'm already down to 193.

Based upon what I'm reading, that kind of weight loss isn't very healthy. Says I have to do a 3500 calorie differential just to burn 1 pound of fat. I'm averaging almost a pound a day. So I guess that means I'm losing something besides fat but I don't think I'm losing muscle or bone mass - I'm running quite a bit and I've got good muscle tone in my arms and legs. Conversely, my face and midsection are getting noticeably leaner. I do feel a little anemic at times when running, and I think that's because I've significantly reduced my carbs.

I'm not starving myself, either. I'm definitely eating way less, but still three meals most days and at least 1000 calories if not more.

The only really hard part of the diet is not eating anything after 8. I'm in bed by 9 most nights because I would just sit around being hungry.

You are losing water KSU, it's a double whammy of less fat and less bloat that's making your chiseled jaw more pronounced now.

So that's ok? I'm drinking lots of water.

It's a good thing , your body holds on to water due to inflammation so less bloat means less inflammation

Which also means the pound a day thing isn't going to keep up. Maintaining muscle mass also burns calories throughout the day, so there is more to creating a deficit than just running to burn calories.

Yeah I expect things will slow down but if I can even do a half pound per day I'll hit my goal.

I'm doing a Hal Higdon marathon training regimen that includes 4 morning runs per week. In addition, I'm running 20 minutes on an inclined treadmill most evenings right before bed - my theory is that it helps me keep my calorie burn going into my sleep. But maybe that's just wishful thinking. Also doing 8 trips up and down a 10 story staircase at work, 2 trips at a time 4 times per day. And then a lunchtime boot camp twice a week.

Drinking probably at least 48oz of water during the day but I guess I'm peeing/sweating/breathing it all out.

I plateua'd at 194 about 4 days ago - even though I was still eating small portions and working out like crazy I guess I shed my bloat and metabolism was slowing down. Started taking Hydroxycut. I know this isn't a long term solution but it does seem to have kickstarted things again (I'm guessing it's the caffeine speeding up my metabolism). Down to 191 (after two days of hydroxy and one 8 mile morning run where i about sweated my balls off) - 16 pounds at day 21. Not sure I'll make it 185 but it will be close.

I made the mistake of taking one of the hydroxycuts last night before bed even though the instructions said not to. That was dumb. Kept me up past 11 with a slight headache.

I took one of those like 10 years ago and I felt like my heart was going to explode.  Never even thought about taking one again.

My reaction hasn't been that bad. But I definitely need to be careful with it. It's also giving me some GI issues. Dipped briefly under 190 today!

Ok guys is this like a new to investing thread or do I need to start a different thread for advice on a basic work out program. Looking for 3-4x a week and 30 min. Would prefer if there is an indoor alternative for weather/circumstance if I can't just get in a run.

What simple items should I get for home (dumbbells?)

IMO you should buy a few kettle bells for strength and do some HIIT stuff for cardio.

There are tons of body weight exercises you can probably find online.  Honestly if you are looking for something that involves strength and cardio with minimal equipment a P90x type program might not be a bad option.  If you wanna go a more traditional route, dumbbells would be my pick but it could be a lot of clutter.  I always thought those bowflex ones were pretty cool.

my knee is a little mumped, has been for a long time - was squatting with terrible form back in high school. it pops and doesn't bend smoothly, hurts if i work it out. if i'd had to guess, something to do with misalignment, muscle imbalance, cartilage issues.

do i go to a physical therapist? some other kind of doctor? i don't know these things. it's fine usually, but i want to start working out my legs again.

Are you in your late 30s/early 40s? If so, let me save you a trip to the specialist because you'll be walking out of there with the narrative that you've worn away a substantial amount of cartilage in your knee. Go ahead and pick a number now... Somewhere between 80%-90%. This could actually work or really well for you... All the guys I work with in that demographic get to double dip... First they get to tell you about how amazing of shape they would be in if not for the fact that they'd lost 87% of the cartilage in their knee, plus -- bonus -- you get to brag about whatever amazing feat of strength you achieved in your younger years that caused you to wear out all that cartilage in the first place. Excited for you to put those youngsters in their place!

I would start taking some osteo bi-flex or equivalent(maybe after Dr approval) and wear a brace of some kind.  Don't do front leg extensions or lunges, like ever again.  There are many other alternative exercises that don't put the kind of stress on your knees that those two thing do.

I've had 4 knee surgeries, two on each knee, and have had the symptoms you have described since I was like 16.  It sucks ass and I've just learned to live with the pain when I am active.

that sounds awful. probably 100 times worse than my knees. what do you think caused it, and what were the surgeries for exactly?

Ehh it is what it is.  I have knee cap alignment problems, so basically it's like a car tire being out of alignment and riding more on one side than the other.  Over time it just wears down the cartilage and they pop and can't take much abuse.

Right knee had chunks of cartilage knocked off(1) from basketball and torn patella tendon(3) for each surgery.  Left knee was a preventative surgery(2) that realigned my knee cap to hopefully prevent what occurred in my right.  Then knocked cartilage off in my left again and that ended my playing days(4).
