Lol, oh yeah the gov't is going to happily pay all those special fees that schools tack on tuition (college tuition the second fastest growing cost increase since 1980 next to healthcare) to pay for all those new buildings.  If that ever ends schools like Kstate won't be building much of anything.

I would be fine with making free only available to ppl who meet a high level of qualifications such as high test scores, high gpa, etc.  Money makes it not equally available.  I mean, dumb rich kids can still go, but they have to pay.

Some states already have this model. I know, for instance, Georgia has the Hope Scholarship, which I believe means tuition is free at state universities if you maintain a 3.0+ GPA throughout high school. There's something similar in Louisiana too, but that one has been the subject of much budgetary back-and-forth lately. Prolly a handful of other states that do it too.

That's the European model as I understand it. Free college is competitive. If you don't make the cut, you get a trade school

they will negotiate a lower tuition and the quality of education will become middle schoolish.

they will pay the regular tuition and said tuition will increase quickly since the gov has deep pockets, similar to what has already happened with large amounts of loans available.

WSJ reporting this morning than 16% of student loan debtors are in long term default.

I wonder how many more are in regular default.
