I'm guessing its so the defense can know who is eligible for a downfield pass
They need to be on the los so the defense knows the 5 guys not playing ol or qb can catch the ball?

The two ends on the line are eligible - if the defense wasnt paying attention, they may think one of the 'ends' is eligible when he really isnt, and puts them in an unfair situation where they pay attention to a guy when they really dont need to? idk, I'm probably getting this interpreted wrong.

Here's and idea. The center can't catch the ball. The two guys to his left cannot catch the ball. The two guys to his right cannot catch the ball. Those 5 have to be on the LOS. Wgaf if the offense wants to have 6 guys in the backfield.

That means a lot of trick formations would be made illegal

Well you can have an unbalanced line. Also I always thought the rationale for having a minimum number on the LOS is because the defense can't immediately engage an offensive player off the LOS. Also for eligible receiver clarity.

This engagement issue makes sense. The rest of it is still stupid imo.

It's very easy to stay within legal formations, a receiver just got confused

I agree. KSU's call was subjective because to me it looked like he hit the guy in the shoulder pad, whereas TT's clearly hit Delton in the head.
