Kansas offensive coordinator Chuck Long, a former head coach at San Diego State, has been sued by Nick Sandford, a former player. Sandford accuses Long of covering up an alleged assault by a teammate in November 2008 that left Sandford with injuries, according to a civil lawsuit filed this week in San Diego Superior Court.
The suit alleges that former San Diego State offensive lineman Lance Louis, now with the Chicago Bears, assaulted Sandford, a safety, in a team meeting room. The attack left Sandford with a concussion, a ruptured eardrum and facial injuries. Sandford is asking for unspecified damages from Long, Louis and the California State University system.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Louis faces a misdemeanor assault charge related to the incident.
Sandford’s suit alleges that Long instructed San Diego State staff members “not to report the attack to law enforcement or university officials.” The incident happened on Nov. 5 and was not reported to campus police until Nov. 20.
Sandford’s suit alleges that Long thought San Diego State “had a better chance to be successful if defendant Louis was allowed to play, thus motivating defendant Long to cover up the attack.”
Long refused comment on the lawsuit through Kansas officials on Wednesday.
