Christmas Music Challenge for the Car
« on: December 07, 2017, 02:51:41 PM »
I started a challenge on December 1st to only listen to Christmas music in car, and nothing else, until Jan. 1, 2018.  For me, that means two radio stations.

Those Holiday Traditions and Holly on XM radio.

So far so good.  I am seeing a really solid mood improvement, and my conversational vocabulary is increasing.  For example, in a meeting today I referred to the recent drop in temperature as “the weather outside is frightful” without even consciously deciding to do so.

Why would you do this to yourself?

Also, do they ever play "Baby it's Cold Outside" ? I hope you don't hear it then start trying to persuade women to stay against their will.

If you successfully persuade the women, then it's not really against their will anymore, Mrs. Gooch.

Anyone can start this challenge!  That’s the great part.

My current fav is Burl Ives singing “Have a jolly jolly Christmas.”  Dean Martin singing “Silent Night” has me in tears every time!  Man, what a delight!

The Holiday Traditions station is by far my preference over the Holly station.  HT is the old stuff, like Perry Como, Frank, Dean, Gene Autry, Nat, you know.  Holly is the newish stuff.  I can’t take oscar Springsteen Xmas songs, for example.  However, I do like Bono singing Xmas songs, that’s dreamy.

On Opposite Day!

This is totally cathartic.  You have to get yourself emotionally and spiritually prepared first, and then when you slide into your ride with a hot cup of coffee and crank those Yuletide tunes you will be elevated to a higher plane of thinking.

Helps you walk into work and say “what can I do to help?” Ya know?

I think it's gonna be tough after December 26. But I'm not familiar w/ the stations in question.

My favorites?

Christmas Wrapping (by The Waitresses), Paul McCartney's "simply having a wonderful christmastime", and any version of "Sleigh Ride".

Also "Jingle Bell Rock" is not a "rock" song in any way, shape, or form.

It’s a litmus test for me.  If I can’t appreciate the Xmas music at any given time, the problem resides inside me.

Agree with Russ on Sir Paul’s Xmas songs.  Those are wonderful.

Youtube is blocked at work so hopefully nobody linked these above.

Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC

Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses

And Christmas Wrapping was mine!

:shy:

There's a nice rotation of Christmas songs that I like to run through a couple of times every year but man, I don't know if there's enough to make it through an entire month especially with a 1 hour daily work commute.  I guess that's the challenging part!

I have a buddy that listens to Christmas music almost exlcusively from Nov 1-Jan 1.    He also wears KU clothing every day.   I think there's a correlation.

Big time 'We Three Kings' fan here. Big time.

wow I'm rarely this consistent with things

I spent a really, really long time trying to think of a better x-mas song than Sleigh Ride.  In the end, I was forced to conclude that it's impossible.

agree, for traditional songs.

Best non-traditional:

Pete I’m glad you are enjoying this but I can’t even listen to one Christmas song without wanting to turn it off.

Heard Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by The Boss today. Love that one!
