TBT - i did not read the entire thread but just need to know one thing - am i too late to the party to make money? tia.

In the short term, probably.  Given the recent growth there has to be a correction at some point...I think  :sdeek:

However there is still money to be made.  I really liked Dlew12’s comment that he invested what he would be willing to lose at a casino.  You don’t have to bet the entire farm to get into crypto.

Long term there is still massive growth that will happen.

$42ish a coin, isn’t that what I bought at for the “Invest Off” with @catastrophe ?

Good luck with that long term projection, bud.

Stopping in to say congrats on your success thus far. Still, I gotta ask: has anyone gotten rich off BTC/LTC yet or do you think a major sell would cause the bubble to burst?

This year in crypto has made a lot of people rich.  This isn’t the first time Bitcoin and crypto have had this kind of growth, and it won’t be the last.  If you still think this is a bubble you don’t understand crypto.  It isn’t going anywhere.

What's the context on this TBT?

Ross Ulbricht(Avi: Dread Pirate Roberts) had that many BTC confiscated when he got arrested by the FBI.  He ran the first Silk Road.  The government treated his BTC as property and auctioned them all off.  The current price at the time and what they auctioned them for was only ~$28 million.  Today they’d be worth ~692 million.

i can't reconcile altcoins with the "true-believers'" rationale that we'll all be paying with this stuff someday.  if a "revolution" is happening, there isn't room for 150 different coins.

XRP has some nice inroads with big bank that I feel makes it a way different player in this new economy.

This is an astute observation.  There isn't room for a ton of coins in the space for mainstream adoption.  If you are interested I would listen to some of Charlie's interviews where he talks about what he sees in the future for the entire industry.  One of the big things that strikes me is that in the future the average person really won't know what protocol or coin they are using for purchases or transferring money.  This is the same way with how the internet works.  You just go to a website and look around, or stream a video.  You don't care if you are viewing the website using TCP or watching a video with UDP, you just know that it works and you can access content.

The same thing will happen in this space.  When you are saving money and storing it in crypto you will be storing it in Bitcoin.  When you want to buy something it will automatically be converted to LiteCoin through cross chain atomic swaps.  The transaction will happen and then if the vendor spends it on buying more products or whatever it will stay in LiteCoin.  If they are keeping that money in the bank to invest later it will be atomic swapped back to Bitcoin for a store of value.  You as the consumer won't care what 'coin' or protocol it's in when you spend or save, it just works.

Many coins have already died out and many more will too.  There isn't enough space in the market for a million different coins.  When the integration happens for the mainstream it will be easy to use and the underlying technology won't be as visible.  That's how Charlie sees the future in the market and how I see it as well.  Mainstream adoption will have to make it easy to use for everyone, preventing people from sending Bitcoin to LiteCoin addresses etc.  Using a trustless system will make internet commerce and global commerce for that matter evolve for the better.

But won't the volatility of these things deter mainstream use?  Sure, the value of the dollar fluctuates, but it's not rising or dropping 25+ percent in a day, as all three major coins did over the last week (with LTC and ETH fluctuating at much as 60 percent or so).

Like, for this system to work (where bitcoin is essentially using other currencies), these currencies are going to have to have some kind of relatively consistent value.  Theoretically, coins are all going to have to level off eventually for mainstream use, correct?

So they are so volatile right now because of market speculation.  Nobody knows how much BTC or LTC SHOULD be worth.  The prevailing theory is that the market will decide how much they should be worth and level off.  At that point it would be more for mainstream use and not as an investment vehicle for what it might be one day.  When it reaches that point it won’t fluctuate wildly anymore, or that’s the idea.

We are still a few years off before a lot of these technologies are perfected, safe, and scalable.  The technological challenges of creating a system without third party trust and scaling that to millions and billions of people is very complex.  Until it gets to that point it won’t be for mainstream use.  We have made great progress but there’s still a long way to go.  To answer your last question, yes, once we can do all the things I talked about all coins that survive SHOULD level off.  That said this is a giant social experiment that has never been done before.
