Title: Go to T&P office sympathy card message
Post by: Phil Titola on December 06, 2017, 03:45:58 PM
I'm tired of writing "sorry for your loss"

Hang in there (draw a lil cat hanging on a branch to accompany it)

If you are going through hell keep on moving, don't slow down, if you're scared don't show it.

I don't write sympathy cards. Sometimes I send flowers, but that's it.

This picture card carries my sympathies for you on the death of your loved one. I pray the departed soul rest in peace and your family gets all the support in this difficult time.

Some variation of using the word "condolences" is my go to, or offering sympathy. I generally hate using the word sorry in a situation where atonement isn't the goal. I understand it's just something we do, but it's weird, it's almost like saying "hey, I would like to make up and admit I did something wrong in this person you love dying"

Exactly.

I went with "think of you in you and your family time of loss" or something...I googled it.

The places that sell sympathy flowers online have shitloads of examples for stuff you can put on their cards.  Steal those.

Every single sympathy expression I can think of sounds canned and not sincere. This is a problem.

I almost went with just signing my name and pointing an arrow to the pre-printed message but thought I'd be shunned.

Could always go the honest route.  "Man, that really sucks."

Sprinkling in a few curse words lends authenticity, I think. "crap, Martha... I can't believe this happened..."

I was going to start a similar thread a few months ago after one of my direct reports had his father unexpectedly die. Turns out I was out of office the day he came back to work and someone else signed the card for me so crisis averted.

I don't think that 3rd one is a flower/gift place but I believe it's what I used last time I had to google this; I mod'd a couple of their lines together.

Phil is this card still on your desk waiting for gE to come up with the best response or did you just go with what you put in the OP?

i just sign my name to everything.   There are 3 Mikes here, so it's easy to fly under the radar.

You need a go to? What kind of horrible things are happening that causes you to send so many that your responses feel repetitive?
