I don't write sympathy cards. Sometimes I send flowers, but that's it.

Some variation of using the word "condolences" is my go to, or offering sympathy. I generally hate using the word sorry in a situation where atonement isn't the goal. I understand it's just something we do, but it's weird, it's almost like saying "hey, I would like to make up and admit I did something wrong in this person you love dying"

Exactly.
I went with "think of you in you and your family time of loss" or something...I googled it.

I almost went with just signing my name and pointing an arrow to the pre-printed message but thought I'd be shunned.

Sprinkling in a few curse words lends authenticity, I think. "crap, Martha... I can't believe this happened..."

I was going to start a similar thread a few months ago after one of my direct reports had his father unexpectedly die. Turns out I was out of office the day he came back to work and someone else signed the card for me so crisis averted.

I don't think that 3rd one is a flower/gift place but I believe it's what I used last time I had to google this; I mod'd a couple of their lines together.

Lot of people and over sending of cards...I mean grandparents? Gtfo
