First topic: Ears
I've had bronchitis for upwards of a month now. It started out pretty awful. I was coughing a ton at the outset, and had a fever of about 101 on July 5th. The fever only lasted one night. At this point, it's minor coughing and just some mucusy gunk in my chest. WebMD says bronchitis can last up to 4 weeks, so I assume the coughing should stop any day now. From what I've gathered from researching on the internet and from my nurse practitioner sister/roommate, you pretty much just have to outlast bronchitis, so a visit to a doctor seems a little unnecessary - I haven't been missing work and the cough is more of an annoyance than anything else (really only cough maybe once ever hour or two). I've been drinking a lot of fluids.
But the odd thing is, my left ear has been "clogged" for about the last two weeks or so. It's a bit like the pressure that you get when you descend on an airplane, except there's no pain at all, only the cloggy feeling. I am having a hard time hearing out of my left ear. Sinus-wise, i feel okay. My nose hasn't been very runny at all.
So my question is, do any of you goEMAW'rs/ENT Specialists know of any connection between bronchitis and whatever is going on in my left ear? I've put alcohol and stuff in it, but to no avail. Can I expect this nonsense in my ear to go by the wayside when I get over my bronchitis (which I assume will be this week) or am I going deaf in my left ear?
Should I see if this thing will just work out itself? Should I seek antibiotics or should I stick with nasal spray?
-
Sounds like a Q for an ENT specialist.

Sounds like a bacterial infection. Go to doctor, will probes give you antibiotics. If it is an inner ear infection or a sinus infection, alcohol won't clear it up. You shouldn't be putting alcohol in your ear anyways.
-
Had that bronchitis crap a few years ago. Stayed home from work for a week, finally went to minor med and got a z-pack and some lean, stayed home from work for another week and still had intermittent coughing fits for like 6 weeks after that. It was pretty unelite, and my teeth hurt like crazy from coughing all the time.
Didn't have any ear problems tho, sorry d.

I'm basically going to wait until some heroic ENT specialist arrives in this thread.
-
you are super lucky you don't have an ear infection
-
Go burn it out in the sauna. That's how I cure any physical, mental, or spiritual affliction that may be ailing me.
-
I had bronchitis last month. That's why I was coughing non-stop during FattyFest. I tried outlasting it without going to the doctor and finally gave up. Go to the doctor asap. He'll give you some meds you'll take for 5 days, but they keep working for another 5 days and then you'll be in good shape.
-
Pretty sure it's strep throat, bro.
-
roommate had that. Turns out he had an ear infection even though there wasn't pain. See a doc bro.
-
dlew, decongestants. the ones you have to get from behind the counter and put your information in the system to make sure you aren't a meth producer or whatever. they will unclog that ear. don't fall for the decongestants you can get off the shelf because they suck.
source: I have a VERY close friend who is an ear doctor
-
they are also the answer if you have ear problems while flying
-
man i have ear probs when flying. they won't pop. gets so bad then finally i hear this weird squeeky noise and then they finally pop. phew.

hate that. do the decongestants and afrin nose spray before taking off.
-
also neti pot. dead serious.
make sure to use sterilized water.
-
not sure how the decons + afrin will effect my prerequisite scotch/xanax combo but will try.

add marijuana to the mix. marijuana is actually a very potent substance that will allow you to mix any drug with any other drug and youll be fine.

you have eustachian tube dysfunction with either negative middle ear pressure in the middle part of your left ear or possibly even an effusion (fluid) if hearing is down a lot. It is not uncommon at all to have negative MEP or even fluid w/out infection. putting things in your outer ear will not help. google "valsalva maneuver" then do that ten times a day or so. also decongestants like sd said won't hurt. you want to force air up into your middle ear and hopefully over time equalize pressure. it more than likely will. you are not going deaf or anything bad. give it time. could take a couple of months but probably won't.
-
Man oh man, wait till Dr. Spaceman gets a hold of this thread. :D
-
aren't you worried about blowing anything important up with all that valsalvaing?

Wow! I can't believe I got such an accurate answer from a poster on gE.c! What are the odds!
I just did the valsalva maneuver and i think i'm better now. Still some pressure "bubbling" around up there, but a few more times and I should be in good shape. FWIW, i woke up this morning and there's not gunk in my chest anymore. I'm a bit exhausted and I'll probably hold off on exercising for a few more days, but wow!
Thanks, Rick Daris and thanks goEMAW.com.

i still think its strep. go see a real doctor, not some goob on goEMAW.com who thinks he knows this crap cuz he read about it on the internet.

DLew, I played my entire 8th grade football season with Bronchitis, you should be fine.
-
the valsalva maneuver is complete bullshit
-
I had a weird inner-ear caused vertigo several years ago and had to do something just like this but completely different and guess what? It worked.

Wow, two ENT Specialists in one thread! What a great community we have here.
-
Awhile back (maybe mid to late 90s?) my ears were all clogged up and I couldn't hear anything. Went to the clinic. They had me take one 24-hour ZyrtecD for 10 days, but take 2 of them on the first day. I think Zyrtec was new at the time, and I got 12 pills from the doctor's free sample closet. Good luck with your ear clog. I hate it when they're clogged so bad you can hear your heart beating.

you had bppv and did an epley maneuver. boom. anymore brainbusters?

I think all of you need to go outside and sweat or something.

I think all of you need to go outside and sweat or something.
My issue actually prevented me from doing so. Weights and stuff don't mix with lack of balance.

i've made a 100% recovery. thanks for the tips Rick Daris and thanks to everyone else for the prayers and support. especially to poetwarrior. the casserole was delightful.

Let's say a doctor has another doctor cover for them for a few shifts. Ok? And this substitute doc is covering an area of medicine they know nothing about. Mkay? Then the sub doc happens to be consulted while on duty and can't fulfill their obligation to provide said service. What should happen to these two so called professionals?
-
Frivolously sue them
-
This scenario happened the other day where Mrs. Bf works. She was trying to setup a procedure to be done on a patient. She calls the specialist on duty that was covering for the regular guy. He say "oh I can't do blah blah procedure because I specialize in a completely diff area lol." (but he will sit there and collect the $100/hr pay check whilst doing nothing!? WTF?)
Meanwhile Mrs. Bf MD has to figure out what to do with a patient that was transferred in whom she accepted because she thought this particular procedure would be covered.
-
does any of this involve the human ear?
-
This type of thing seems to be happening on the reg at this particular establishment. No Rick it involves a penis (the patient's, not mine) that just will not accept a foley catheter and a bladder in extreme need of being emptied.
-
i assume you live in some hayseed community in western kansas where the patient is lucky to be seeing anyone with an MD next to their name. it's not like the hospital GM can force 2 of each specialists to come live/work in hayseed, KS, population Shitfire

No, it's Hutch. The medical community is mumped in the head out there.
-
good to know but hutch is hayseed bro. clams friend was offered a job at that hospital, lot of money and benefits, but declined, because- hutch.
-
that clams guy can really do it all.
-
Tell bill said patient was tweetimg smack on Waters and just let Bill beat the piss out of him. Bladder empty and bill gets to burn off his @ frustration. Win/win.

Well no crap it's hayseed clams. That's not the point, these assholes are treating the patients out there like crap. There are docs there that have their mid level see the patients. Then they will sign the charts like they saw the patient without ever laying an eye on the patient. (they can't bill anything unless a doc signs off on it.) There are patients being billed for orders that were not even written by a qualified professional.

Thanks again for the ear help, Rick Dearis.

all perfectly fine and legal. google "incident to billing".

The Dr. has to see the patient or be in-house to bill a physicians fee legally. What is actually happening is the Dr. is sitting at home in bed and having a CNP admit the patients then billing under the Dr's name. Also there have been many incidents of Dr.s admitting patients under another Dr.s name.

what you need is for Dub Dub to go in there and kick ass like he did with those loser property managers for his friend

people that are part of the same practice can oversee and bill under the other's npi. so the dr billing under another is ok. a cnp admitting and billing under a dr that is not there is also ok as long as his partner is "there". none of this really sounds all that uncommon but then again i really have no rough ridin' clue what is going on there because it's all so rough ridin' vague. dunno.

Anyone break a middle toe? Did on an excursion here in Jamaica. Hurts like hell. I just taped my toes together for support. Not sure what else you can do for it.
-
I have not broken any toes but I would stay the hell away from hospitals in Jamaica.
-
Yeah, we leave tomorrow. Just gonna keep taping it up until Friday
-
There's nothing to do really, stay off of it.
-
Yeah, there is nothing really to do for a toe, unless it is the big toe (to a point), pretty much not walking on it, reducing swelling, and taking pain meds as needed, and time is about all you can do for toes.
Toes are just too small, hard to cast, and as long as they are obviously jutting in weird direction you kinda have to let them do.
-
Awesome! Thanks for the advice guys. Kinda what I figured. It looks like a grape right now.
-
The only thing I would watch for is if it's an infection and not a broken toe, if you feel feverish or the affected area spreads, which both are pretty obvious signs, then you need to go to a hospital ASAP.
I would still have a doc look at it once you get back, but by then it'll probably be just sore and uncomfortable.
-
Just reread this thread. What a hero Daris is. A police officer who dabbles with the inner-workings of the ear. The valsalva maneuver. who knew?
