I thought of this today for some reason. Maybe we will have a someone go off for 62 in NIT this year! :runaway:

-
Us in the NIT. Funny joke.
-
That team in the NIT was a joke too. Huge underachieving season, much more than this year.
-
Went to that game when I was eleven. Left the game thinking Ski Jones was the GOAT. Went home and drained endless 3's on the suction cup basketball hoop in my room.
-
I was at K-State, but I couldn't go to this game during spring break. I listened to the 2nd half on the radio. I went to the Mississippi State and Gonzaga games though.
-

Under the current NIT selection structure that Ski led Cats team would've probably been sitting at home and we never would've had this moment.
-
I played against Ski and the other seniors on this team, and Kirk McGuffin, on a barnstorming tour a couple of weeks after this.
-
I rolled Surge Afeli's ankle at the rec one time. :gocho:
-
I think I was nine when I went to this game. I would never have thought that I was witnessing the greatest single individual sports performance I would ever see in person. I didn't realize how dumb the NIT was when I was that age either though, so I really enjoyed going to all the games much more than was warranted.
-
I spent that afternoon walking around the washed out spillway. Man, that was cool. Then went to the game that night.
What a great day that was in Manhattan, KS.
-
I was probably playing NES when this happened. or being forced to do cow farm stuff. depends on what time of day it was.
-
What year was it?
-
94
-
Oh man. I was still living on Ft. Riley. 100% UK Cat.
-
point: I attended Askia Jones basketball camp :gocho:
counterpoint: it was 1 day in Meade, KS and only like 5 people attended and then we went to pizza hut with Askia Jones
-
I remember listening to this on the radio as a youngster....like so young I didn't know the difference between the NIT and the NCAA tournament.
I just knew that K-State was the best and Ski was really good.
-
I have no memory of this event and only found out it ever happened by reading this board.
-
point: I attended Askia Jones basketball camp :gocho:
counterpoint: it was 1 day in Meade, KS and only like 5 people attended and then we went to pizza hut with Askia Jones
point: part of the camp was to see who could do a wall sit the longest (wtf ski you lazy POS)
counterpoint: at the end of the camp (because we worked hard) ski did some dunks (of low/medium quality but nobody in Meade could dunk so it was amaze)
-
were you the center?
-
were you the center?
I was always the center. I was tied for tallest kid in my class from like 4th grade through HS and I currently stand at my all time maximum height of 6' tall. BUT, if you find some old Meade, KS football or basketball rosters you will see I've noted my height to be 6'1" as an intimidation tactic for the opposing team :fatty:
-
If memory serves me correctly that Pepperdine doosh of a coach of ours pulled him out early or he could have had much more.. (ftp://:angry:)
-
Lol our entire roster was 5'10 to 6'2 in high school. Rock Creek!

I actually wouldn't be surprised if I turned the intimidation up a notch and claimed 6'2" by my senior year. I wouldn't put it passed me. I can't remember for certain though.

point: the camp wasn't even at the Meade HS gym. it was at the Jr. High gym which had a super low ceiling that if you threw the ball really high you could hit the ceiling and knock out a ceiling tile and get your ass kicked out of the little dribblers game by the lady referee who is also your mom's secretary.
counterpoint: why TF didn't they have the thing at the HS gym? I have no idea. weird in hindsight but as a kid I didn't think about it.
-

Uhm, wrong coach.
-
Not only was I at this 62 point game, but I was also present for Beasley's and Denis' 44 point outings!
Wow!
I wonder how many Cat fans can make that claim, in a non-alternative fact kind of way?
Not many I bet.
:Woot:

unless you went to Askia Jones basketball camp in Meade, KS you can kindly GTFO of this thread
-
Unless they handed out those Ski Lift posters, where Askia was shown dunking a basketball while wearing ski goggles and holding a ski pole, and you're pretty sure that you still have it in a box somewhere in your attic or something, I will stay right where I am.

FINISH HIM, SLEEPFIGHTER
-
SleepFighter probably doesn't know what Ski's favorite type of pizza is, though.
-
point: back then the Meade pizza hut didn't have a lunch buffet. only salad bar.
counterpoint: pitchers of doctor pepper
-
SleepFighter probably doesn't know what Ski's favorite type of pizza is, though.
I don't. Was it pepperoni and mushroom?
I do have one more riveting Askia Jones story though.
He found out that my girlfriend at the time lived in Goodnow Hall, and he must have liked her or whatever, because he showed up to the lobby of Goodnow Hall and called her. I was hanging out with her in her room, and she didn't believe that it was Askia Jones calling. So I walked down to the lobby, and it turned out that it was Askia Jones. I just nodded at him, walked back to my girlfriend's room, and said, "yup, that's Askia Jones."
-
these are great stories
-
that's a good story SF
-
would steve dave like to call any other stories to the stand? this one could be a bloodbath
-

nope, I think that's all I remember

Move over SD, there's a new sheriff in town! #gE #1PosterSleepFighter
-
That guy eye poked me so harshly during a rec game I am sure there are still remnants of his DNA in my cornea.
-
UPDATE I REMEMBERED:
point: 1 of the 5 people at Askia Jones basketball camp was A GIRL
counter point: her brother was one of the other 5 and he was technically too young to participate but was let in because only like 5 people showed up plus his sister was attending plus Askia was getting paid by the kid plus he had an upcoming pizza bill he knew about
-

Hey SleepFighter I can satisfy all 3 criteria.
1. Was at the Ski game.
2. Was at the Beasley/Walker Baylor game in Waco, and the Denis 44-er.
3. Have the Ski Lift poster.
So what do we do now? Well Big 8 rules at that time stipulated that you go to a tiebreaker, and that tiebreaker was this:
"...during the Ski 62-point game, were you and your younger bro working as ballboys behind the south basket mopping up sweat on the court during timeouts, and if so, did that high-ranking position allow you post-game access in which you could freely walk into the lockerroom to get Ski's autograph and subsequently accidentally see Belvis Noland naked?"
Big 8 rules say winner of this tiebreaker is awarded the oppy to tell the loser to suck my butt, so sleep fighter plz go ahead and suck my butt, tia
-
Also can confirm one of my best friends had a hamster named Askia and also that Ski told me I did a great job ballboying after the Fresno State massacre
-

I'm not competing against you attendees of crap and junk but I did just remember another IRL thing:
point: you got a t-shirt for going to Askia Jones basketball camp. they didn't have enough shirts at the Meade stop (didn't plan on an entire 5 people turning out apparently). this is an irl thing. like they handed out a couple and were like "damn, sorry. we ran out on the last stop at like Bucklin or some crap" (but using nice words kids can hear. and just using Bucklin as a placeholder for any tiny POS SW KS town)
counterpoint: Askia said he would autograph and mail shirts to sd and sd bud. we were hopeful but not confident this would happen. FAST FORWARD LIKE 2 WEEKS a package arrives for lil steve dave (probably first package addressed to me not from my grandma) and inside....a tshirt signed by BOTH Askia Jones and the crappy Henson brother that's not Steve who I don't remember his name and wasn't at the camp. Wore it to school the next day to stunt on a bunch of mennonite farm kids who didn't know about sports :gocho:
-
Brian Henson. Was ballboying behind the north goal at Midnight Madness one year when the lights went out and they got the spotlights rollin, then they pulled his cheerleader GF out to midcourt and he proposed to her and gave her roses. Not too long after, he transferred to Washburn. Always wondered if the two kids made it in this crazy world and junk. Also Larry "Bud" Melman appeared at that Midnight Madness and read a Letterman-style Top 10 list about like why we would beat KU's asses that year and all 4,211 people in attendance (and Darryl Cunningham) went absolutely apeshit.
-
the crappy Henson brother that's not Steve who I don't remember his name and wasn't at the camp.
Brian
-
Always wondered if the two kids made it in this crazy world and junk.
They did not
-
Can't compete with the SF stories but here's mine.
Went to the NIT game with a buddy. Driving back to KC we listened to Bob Davis call KU loss to Purdue in Ncaa tournament. Glenn Robinson had 44 pts. 30 in first half. Bob asked coming out of the break " have you ever seen a guy go for 30 in a half?"
We looked at each other and laughed. Yes, yes we have Bob.

Did Brian and Theresa actually even get married? And does his head currently also look like a regulation sized basketball?

Theresa grew up right down the street from me. She was a couple years older and I didn't know her well, but pretty sure the was an actual wedding.
-
I was at this game and pretty sure it was with Dr. Daris. We then most likely went to Rusty's and pounded big beers of Icehouse.
So top that dorks

Yes they did (not 100% sure on her name). Yes it does.

I vividly remember watching a ballboy on the floor bowing down in a "we're not worthy" type of manner as Ski rained down 3's. Was this Skinny the elder?

omg forgot about that lol

Oddly enough I was skiing that day at Breckenridge. Watched portions of the game at the Last Lift bar.

I wonder if someone in the AD maintains an archive... Maybe email this guy?

If there's an archive, they should make the whole thing public because it would be freaking amazing.

unbelievable its not out there at all :don'tcare:

ski was my roommate at the time of this game, i dropped him off at bramlage before the game and took his car ( I didn’t have one) home to watch tv, then back to bramlage for the game. afterwards we went to applebee’s for some celebratory wings and garlic bread
this was an important game for him as he was working to increase his value to nba scouts
-
I did a brief search for the poster but only found Saul cheating on us.

Been thinking about that game a lot recently for some weird reason. Thought of it today before I ever saw this thread bump. I used to have a Ski Lift poster, but I don't think it's in my parents' house anymore. I'll check next tie I go back to MHK, but that won't be at least until Covid is done. Sweet Jesus I loved that poster.
You might also check the Hale Library University Archives and Special Collections Department. I dunno what their situation is right now because of the fire a few years ago, but they very well may have a copy of it. It would be worth emailing Veronica Denison, University Archivist, at (785) 532-3420 or . If she doesn't have it then she might at least be able to steer you in the right direction.

Clams posts so many silly things that most people probably just blow this one off as non factual.

Went to this game with my gramps when I was the tender age of eight years old. Gramps was a cool dude, played on the freshman football squad at K-State in the early 50s. He also swears he played something called night basketball, because you couldn't play two varsity sports at the time, apparently they had a team for players that were better than your average rec league guys. Now, this sounded like total bullshit, and I can't find any record of it, but he was a straight shooter, so I give him the benefit of the doubt. He tells a good story of Tex Winter when he first got to K-State as an assistant. He was walking by the pole vaulters one day on his way to basketball practice (tex was) and they were all rough ridin' around trying to jump a height that was pretty improbable, even for D1 athletes. Tex strolls by, takes off his shoes, grabs a pole and rough ridin' clears it by like six inches. Hands the pole back to the whipper snappers he showed up, puts his shoes back on and heads to practice. Anyway, Ski was out of his gourd that evening. One of my favorite memories with one of my favorite people.
Also, my grandpa would have rough ridin' hated oscar Weber. If his heart hadn't already have gotten him, watching oscar would have killed him anyway. It's best he went before Frank got run.
-
great story shared by the best la croix. thanks pamplemousse.
-
You're welcome, doctor.
-
My bro was there. I think he still has the ticket.
-
Maybe it was mentioned earlier in this thread but I haven't gone back for a re-read; if you go back and review footage of this game you can look closely and see two elementary school versions of current posters on this blog sitting behind the south basket. :fiestapeek:
-
I know I have that poster in a box somewhere. I may be able to dig it up.
