Essentially Flyertalk / Advice for a first time Expectant Father
« on: June 21, 2022, 04:34:36 PM »
Had the great news on Sunday that I will join the grand fraternity of fathers. Besides brushing up on "dad jokes" is there any other advice on what I should be doing/preparing for the next 9 months?

Essentially Flyertalk / Apartments in the KCK metro
« on: August 16, 2021, 03:25:11 PM »
Hey there everybody! My wife and I are moving to the KC area from Arlington, Virginia, at the beginning of November and have not yet figured out where we are going to live. Most apartment complexes out that way don't know availability until 60 days out so we have a couple of weeks yet before we will have to make a commitment. I know a good portion of this board has either previously lived or currently live in that region and I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Our preferred criteria:
- Within 45 minutes of Baldwin City (we have family there we want to be able to visit easily)
- Around $1000 per month is the goal - we currently pay much more than that and are hoping to save up for a down payment on a future home
- Two-bedroom preferably
- Near the 35 corridor
- Flexible leases - hoping to possibly sign a shorter lease in order to find a home and be done with apartment living

I look forward to hearing your suggestions! Thanks and #GoCats!

I like this one. Would be interested to hear the diverse opinion on Trump's second Supreme Court nomination.

To those of you who are into cord cutting this seems like an awesome deal:

http://www.theverge.com/2016/11/30/13788934/directv-now-att-internet-tv-service-questions-pricing-channels

100 channels for $35 no cable box needed. The only thing missing that I can tell is CBS and usable on a Roku, but it seems like those are on the 2017 roadmap.

The New Joe Montgomery Birther Pit / Validity of Polls?
« on: January 26, 2016, 01:24:30 PM »
We have talked about this many times on here. I wouldn't mind if people more in the know posted facts and such on the matter. I heard this piece today on NPR that reminded me of our debates over the validity and necessity of polls.

http://hereandnow.wbur.org/2016/01/26/problems-with-polls

The intriguing debate seems to be whether or not polls actually influence voters to make a specific decision.

Also funny that the first political polling was only done to prove that the polling process was accurate.

The New Joe Montgomery Birther Pit / Death Spiral - The New Welfare Map
« on: December 11, 2015, 09:19:03 AM »

Quote
THE NEW WELFARE MAP

These 11 States now have More People on Welfare than they do Employed!
Last month, the Senate Budget Committee reports that in fiscal year 2012, between food stamps, housing support, child care, Medicaid and other benefits, the average U.S. Household below the poverty line received $168.00 a day in government support. What's the problem with that much support? Well, the median household income in America is just over $50,000,which averages out to $137.13 a day. To put it another way, being on welfare now pays the equivalent of $30.00 an hour for a 40-hour week, while the average job pays $20.00 an hour.

Furthermore:
There are actually two messages here. The first is very
interesting, but the second is absolutely astounding - and explains a lot.

A recent "Investor's Business Daily" article provided very
interesting statistics from a survey by the United Nations International Health Organization.

Percentage of men and women who survived a cancer five years
after diagnosis:
U.S. 65%
England 46%
Canada 42%

Percentage of patients diagnosed with diabetes who received
treatment within six months:
U.S. 93%
England 15%
Canada 43%

Percentage of seniors needing hip replacement who received it
within six months:
U.S. 90%
England 15%
Canada 43%

Percentage referred to a medical specialist who see one within
one month:
U.S. 77%
England 40%
Canada 43%

Number of MRI scanners (a prime diagnostic tool) per million
people:
U.S. 71
England 14
Canada 18

Percentage of seniors (65+), with low income, who say they are
in "excellent health":
U.S. 12%
England 2%
Canada 6%

And now for the last statistic:

National Health Insurance?
U.S. NO
England YES
Canada YES

Check this last set of statistics!!

The percentage of each past president's cabinet who had worked
in the private business sector prior to their appointment to the cabinet. You know what the private business sector is; a real-life business, not a government job.

Here are the percentages.

T. Roosevelt.................... 38%
Taft................................ 40%
Wilson ........................... 52%
Harding........................... 49%
Coolidge......................... 48%
Hoover............................ 42%
F. Roosevelt..................... 50%
Truman........................... 50%
Eisenhower................ .... 57%
Kennedy......................... 30%
Johnson.......................... 47%
Nixon.............................. 53%
Ford................................ 42%
Carter............................. 32%
Reagan............................ 56%
GH Bush.......................... 51%
Clinton .......................... 39%
GW Bush........................ 55%
Obama............................. 8%

This helps to explain the incompetence of this administration:
only 8% of them have ever worked in private business! That's right! Only eight percent---the least, by far, of the last 19 presidents! And these people are trying to tell our big corporations how to run their business?

How can the president of a major nation and society, the one with the most successful economic system in world history, stand and talk
about business when he's never worked for one? Or about jobs when he has never really had one? And when it's the same for 92% of his senior staff and closest advisers? They've spent most of their time in academia, government and/or non-profit jobs or as "community organizers." They should have been in an employment line.

Pass this on because we'll NEVER see these facts in the main
stream media.

The New Joe Montgomery Birther Pit / What ISIS really wants.
« on: November 19, 2015, 08:29:45 AM »
This article is an extremely informative read. It is a bit lengthy, but it covers why ISIS is doing what it is doing and why certain strategies against them have failed so miserably.

The New Joe Montgomery Birther Pit / Are Israel and Isis the same thing?

I realize this was posted in a thread that is just for mockery and laughing and pointing but I am interested in if there is any truth to that comparison.

I realize this source is biased, but the reasons listed sound logical and unbiased to me. I'd enjoy hearing how this list is inaccurate.

If ESPN would just focus on teams rather than what conference these teams play in then guys like me wouldn’t have to do this. But they do, so I’m doing this…

-Sixth-ranked Auburn – sixth ranked!! – had to go to overtime to beat Jacksonville State. Jacksonville State! Here’s all I know about Jacksonville State: They aren’t an FBS school. They didn’t win any games in last year’s FCS playoffs. Yet, they almost – and probably should have – beat the SIXTH-RANKED team in the nation. Many have pointed this out, but Auburn did very little to earn that ranking. They thought a shiny new defensive coordinator and a hyped new QB would solve all their problems from last year. How’s that going?

-Toledo – TOLEDO!! – went on the road to beat No. 18 Arkansas. The Hogs were ranked 18th because this was supposed to be the year everything came together after they were so close a season ago. And then….well, Toledo. By the way, Cyclone fans, enjoy that road game this week.

-This isn’t that bad, but the way it happened is…Tennessee blew a two-touchdown lead at home in the fourth quarter and lost to Oklahoma in overtime. Oklahoma isn’t a great football team, but Tennessee isn’t either. Just because they beat the ever-living snot out of a dreadful Iowa team in a bowl game, pollsters thought they were on the up and up. Naaaah.

-Missouri, which is ranked 21st, trailed Arkansas State at half and had to come back to beat them by a touchdown. That’s Arkansas State not Arkansas, who – if you’ll remember – lost to Toledo at home.

-Florida trailed in the second half and needed to hang on to beat East Carolina at home. Afterwards, Jim McElwain acted like a dang fool.

-LSU and Mississippi State played in Starkville on Saturday night, and it was just a terrible game. I mean, it was a close game, and it was somewhat eventful. However, it was a terribly played game. Both teams did so many stupid things to lose it, and eventually Mississippi State did. HAIL STATE!

Last week, the SEC had 10 teams ranked. Now they have seven. That still seems like too many.

Quote from:  Louis Farrakhan: Nation of Islam Leader
Death is sweeter than to continue to live and bury our children while White folks give the killers hamburgers. Death is sweeter than watching us slaughter each other to the joy of a 400-year-old enemy. Death is sweeter. The Qur’an teaches persecution is worse than slaughter, then it says, retaliation is prescribed in matters of the slain. Retaliation is a prescription from God to calm the breasts of those whose children have been slain. If the federal government will not intercede in our affairs, then we must rise up and kill those who kill us, stalk them and let them feel the pain of death that we are feeling.

My current list:

If you have any suggestions on additions I would love to hear it. This is usually a great list to check out when I can't watch the cats because I get every aspect of what I am missing. But sometimes it is lacking as well.

Tech Support and Suggestion Board / Vid to Gif now available via Imgur
« on: January 30, 2015, 04:07:05 PM »
I wasn't sure where to put this, so mods please relocate it if you need to.

Imgur is now offering a way to take videos and turn them into gifs up to 15 seconds in length.

Go to: http://imgur.com/vidgif

Everything is self explanatory from there.

Here is an example of a video to gif conversion I did of one of my favorite commercials:

I was treated to some luck when my girlfriend's job offered out tickets for last night's top 25 showdown between UVA and Maryland. This was my first time watching a live basketball game since moving to the east coast and it was a very interesting experience. The xfinity center was pretty impressive. It sported a video board reminiscent of Jerry's World and the club seats were at pro level.

The game wasn't all that interesting since Maryland looked worse than the cats at shooting, but the atmosphere was intense. The student body had traditional chants that they all knew how to use and they were quite noisy. I'll also give their cheer squad a thumbs up since at halftime they rolled out some mats and did a real show. The things they did were quite impressive and I was thoroughly entertained by their acrobatics. They also have a gymnastics team, so I assume there is some crossover which is cheating. Props to the row of students who were dressed in suits like Turgeon's and they each put a little bit of white in their hair like his. That was pretty funny. Reminds me of the time my friends and I did "Martin's Mafia" back in the day.

The biggest disappointment was their highlight videos. They didn't pump me up at all and were put to poorly chosen music. Maybe that is because I couldn't care less about the team, but that was one thing that I think K-State has a pretty good handle on.

My overall assessment of the wildcats chances against either team:

If we played them today on a neutral court:
Maryland 67 - KSU 80
UVA 85 - KSU 70

If we played them today in Bramlage:
Maryland 60 - KSU 90
UVA 75 - KSU 80

Kansas State Football / Is Bill's health in question?
« on: November 21, 2014, 11:04:40 AM »
Did anyone take note of the giant coat and goofy gloves they had Bill wear last night? Ok, I know it was like 20 degrees and with the windchill it felt like 12 or something. But Dana was walking the sidelines in a windbreaker.

Is this a sign that Bill is dealing with some crazy sickness? I have never seen bill so "coated up" before.

Also surprised that the coat and gloves were not purple or K-State themed.

Thoughts?

Essentially Flyertalk / Berne vs Carhartt
« on: November 20, 2014, 02:18:15 PM »
My company's promotional provider has been having issues with Carhartt recently - discontinued items, delayed stock for months etc. And they are looking to change our company store garments from being Carhartt to Berne. Does anyone have an opinion on these two suppliers and the quality of their garments?

Anyone else going to Molly Malones tonight?

I can't be the only one who loves reading the blog entries on ESPN throughout the football season. Each of the major conferences has a dedicated writer who writes informed articles about that conference. Even when a team isn't in the top 25 you can read about the ups and downs of a fun season.

So, it frustrates me immensely every year when basketball season rolls around and I am excited to read about the cats and other teams in the BIGXII in depth like during football seaosn and there is nothing. North Carolina has a dedicated writer, then there is just one piss poor excuse for a blog that covers the other 350 division 1 teams.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

This is beyond ludicrous and boggles my mind. Why do you think ESPN puts so little effort into covering NCAA Men's Basketball as compared to their coverage of NCAA Football?

23
How can I watch the youngsters balling around the hoop tonight in the DMV?

TIA
