NM didn't make the because because no one knows anything about them other than their color is red.  I don't even know what their mascot/team name is or where their school is located.  I also know that the biggest TV market is NM is pure trash.

NM is in Albuquerque which is the 48th largest TV market.  They are the Lobos which is wolf in Spanish.  By comparison Cincy is #36 and Denver is #17.  Football at NM has been pretty bad since Rocky Long left although they finally seem to be improving under Bob Davie.  I think they're only mediocre academic-wise, which might've also played into them getting cut.

I'm glad we aren't taking anyone whose academics aren't up to snuff.

The good news, to me, is that it means we aren't just doing a money grab.  It's trying to find legit universities that may match our profile/culture.

FWIW, KSU, TTU, OSU are not exactly considered academic heavyweights.  Main reason we'll never get invite to big 10.

Albuquerque is a fine town (I go through there for work on a semi regular basis) but outside of a rather kickass bball arena, and the Albuquerque Isotopes minor league team (best minor league team name I can think of) UNM just isn't there. Their stadium is laughably small and not ready for P5 football. They could increase, but New Mexico in general for a state is too small, it's basically the same population as Nebraska but instead of 1 D1 school in Nubbs playing football, they have 2 in NMSU and UNM.

Right.  But most public schools in this process have a minimum profile that looks something like this...

US News & World Report Top 200 Ranking
Carnegie Research Tier 1
Annual research spend over $140-150 million (private schools are an exception)

To be honest, OSU is the only public school that is either in our conference, or under consideration, that doesn't hit the markers.  They are a tier 2 school that doesn't spend nearly as much on research as Tech, WVU, and KSU.  In the Big 12, KSU is the #5 school in research spend based on the last National Science Foundation reports that I've seen.

NSF Research dollar rankings of all of the schools in the keep and cut list.

Bold means Carnegie Tier 1.
Italic means Private/Liberal Arts
Strike means they were on the cut list

#41 USF
#50 Cincinnati
#75 Colorado State
#82 UConn
#91 New Mexico
#94 Temple
#105 UCF
#120 Tulane
#126 Houston
#128 Rice
#149 San Diego State
#184 Memphis
#201 Air Force
#201 UNLV
#214 BYU
#222 SMU

#229 East Carolina
#237 Boise St.
#281 No. Illiniois
#341 Arkansas State

It's not 100% confirmed that Memphis is really "in".  That's kind of up for debate right now.  Unless you're private or Liberal Arts, the only schools under consideration are Tier 1 schools with high research dollars.

If you cut it down to the four AAC group A schools (teams with more value per media contracts), BYU, and CSU, this is what that list ultimately looks like.

#50 Cincinnati
#75 Colorado State
#82 UConn
#94 Temple
#126 Houston
#214 BYU

Now, intermix that with the current Big 12...targets in green.

#34 Texas
#50 Cincinnati
#74 Iowa State
#75 Colorado State
#77 Kansas
#82 UConn
#83 Oklahoma
#94 Temple
#106 Kansas State
#116 West Virginia
#119 Texas Tech
#126 Houston
#135 Oklahoma State
#214 BYU
#257 Baylor
#346 TCU

When you cross map it all, you can kind of see why CSU is still kicking.

This is your list of six.  Cut 2-4 of those in green, and that's what your lineup will be.

so, basically, it's Kansas.

Ahhh...the animal's 2025 deal  is something I understand much better now (making KSU a top 50 research university).  Too bad Brownback had to pull the rug out from under him with those budget cuts, driving the animal to Washington State.

Private schools are kind of held to a different standard.  TCU, Baylor, and BYU would be in the Top 4 of US News and World Report rankings in the Big 12 should it fall out that way.

I'm not sticking up for NM, but just stating the facts.  They're 316 miles from TT.  It's a haul, but it's not like they have any other neighbors nearby.  I know it's a big game for the NM folks and I'm pretty sure it is for the TT fans as well.
