Even losing KU might cause the conference to implode, since that could cause OU or UT or both to think that the conference is weakened beyond repair.

If you break that into Revenue After Subsidy /  Teams Reported the BIGXII is sitting pretty:

BIGXII  - $12,176,288
BIG 10  - $9,694,866
ACC      - $8,715,456
PAC 12  - $8,102,262
SEC       - $7,885,892

The original numbers already were the averages per team.

Toss out Oregon and the Pac's numbers drop even more, and what's not explained is, did Oregon use that huge contribution for facilities?   If so, they do their accounting differently than K-State and many other schools.    K-State doesn't include capital contributions on the report(s) those numbers were gleaned from.

I think they key here, for those that are pro-expansion (or are on the fence) is that we have a look-in provision in 2017.  If we were able to add two members by that point, there is almost a guarantee that the GOR would be extended to help increase the payout of the extension.

This is important because the ACC GOR ends a year before ours.  If you want to essentially ensure the survival of this conference, we need status quo payouts and an extension to 2027-2028(ish).  That means the ACC, which is the weakest, financially, will be the first one on the chopping block.

Let's say that we add a couple of teams (the who isn't important right now), and we get the GOR extended until 2027.  As we near 2025-2026, the ACC teams are severely lagging behind in revenue.  Florida State has had a down few years, and more often than not, the Big 12 is the one in that 4th playoff spot as opposed to an ACC team.

Let's say the Big Ten flirts with UNC/UVA to the point where they see the writing on the wall, and they're willing to jump ship.  They move to the Big Ten.  The SEC then wants to move into NC and VA by taking NC St. and VT.  That leaves literally everyone left for us to take 4-6 teams from.

Let's say that Florida State, Louisville, GT, and Clemson are jumpy and looking to move. Or we go to 18 and add Pitt and Duke or Miami. There's possibilities there.

I'm not saying this is likely, obviously, but it's a scenario to think about.

Can't we rid the conference of KU and add North Carolina State, too?

LOL at the KSU mindset that some sort of lawsuit by the flunkees left behind will deter ANY major conference from adding schools.  Lawsuits aren't going to save you, KSU.  If realignment occurs, you're getting left out.  None of the P4 conferences want anything to do with you. Not the big 10.  Not the PAC14. Not the ACC. Not the SEC.  You bring NOTHING to the table.  Not nearly enough tv sets.  No AAU membership.  Not a football blue blood.  Not a basketball blue blood.

Meh.  It won't even require lawsuits.

This conference isn't going anywhere, and if the Big Ten would have wanted KU, and they could have KU, they'd have done it by now.

The one that wanted them was Gee, and he's at WVU now.  Everyone else was, and is, looking East.

The SEC will not take KU.  Their biggest value add is the KC market, and Mizzou already gave them that.

This is why the media doesn't make conference realignment decisions.

The one true marriage in college athletics is UNC and Duke. If the SEC ventures into that state, it'll be NCSU.

The marriage is actually UVA and UNC.  Duke is kind of like the sister-in-law.

Any realignment article can be completely invalidated if they have Baylor going to the Pac-12.

The Pac-12, especially the power cabal of Stanford and Cal, will never take a religiously affiliated private school.  You may as well chisel that on a tablet of stone.

Also, he has UVA and VT splitting, which is probably not very likely, either.  There is a ton of political baggage and history that links those two together.

It was UVA that strong armed the ACC into taking VT in the first place.

4x16 will never happen.  You may see four super conferences, but no one will be left behind.  It may be 14, 16, 16, and 18 (or something like that). The legal and political ramifications are too significant to leave schools behind.

It will be four, 24 team conferences that are geographically minded. Each conference will have two divisions of 12 split into two regions. Teams play everyone in their region (5 games), 3 rotating division teams, 2 rotating conference teams and 1 permanent rival (forced or natural if they ended up in different conferences). Yes it's only 11 games, but everyone who doesn't make the playoffs goes bowling.

The 16 winners of each region will play in the Division Championship Game (8 games). The winners will play in the Conference Championship Game (4 games). Those winners will be seeded by the Playoff Committee (or whatever they're calling themselves at that time) and will play 1v4 &2v3. The winners play in the Championship Game. It amounts to a 16 team playoff. The schools are chosen by winning, not polls.

It means we'd have to winnow down the FBS to 96 teams. I highly doubt we get left out.

Everyone keeps assuming that Boren wants OU to go somewhere else.  I think Boren is a pretty smart guy, and he realizes that's it's better to be a part of the group that runs a geographically relevant P5 conference as opposed to joining one with an established power structure.

He just wants two more teams.  Not many people are taking that at face value, but he actually just wants two more teams.
