TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Other Sports (Tiger's Back) => Topic started by: bones129 on August 04, 2014, 01:27:58 AM

Tiger withdrew today with more back problems. Didn't look good at all. Is he done for the PGA Championship next week and for the season? Out of the Ryder Cup?
I'd say all of the above. He might try the PGA, but I don't think he'll finish.
-
Hahaha so what you mean is Tiger's not back (back).
-
Hahaha so what you mean is Tiger's not back (back).
Yeah the thread title confused me for a bit too. Really? he's back? A guy who hasn't won a major in 6 years? OH his actual back. Yes, that.
-
OK, the thread title was a bit ambiguous. Meant to start a discussion about his back probs.
That said, today's round at the PGA clearly poves that Tiger is not "back" in the performance sense.
I wonder if he will ever be.

I don't think he will ever be "back" to dominating like he did in the late 90's early 2000's. He has had many health problems with his knees, back, and isn't getting any younger (he's 38 :surprised:), plus there is a lot of new young blood that while aren't as dominate as Tiger was the Rorys and Keymers and Watson's and many others supply a lot of pressure. He still should end up beating out Nicklaus for all time Major victories but this idea of him being just going out and winning a Major tourny especially since it's been 6 years since his last Major victory is just ludicrous and needs to stop. He'll get there, but at like a victory a year, maybe.
-
I'm not sure he'll beat out Jack now for majors, but he'll win at least one more.
-

Kind of sad really, he came out the gate so strong and then fizzled out at the peak of his game. 14 majors is still an unbelievable achievement but I thought he would run away with it and put up something like 20.

5 years or so ago I did too. It seemed like it was just a matter of time, but his body has broken down and I think the off the course stuff got into his head. Plus, I think there are a lot of good younger golfers out there, and more golfers that are athletes or at least that work on being better athletes (strength and conditioning, etc.) which makes them better golfers. I think Rory will probably get to double digits in majors for example.
-

_fan, you're brilliant no question there, but I disagree. Tiger will never win a major again.

I'm possibly judging Tiger too much based on what he once was, no doubt. I just think he'll have one major yet where he puts things together and is healthy. If he does he can still be pretty darn good. We'll see.

yes, yes we will

He's definitely done this week. He needs to put the bag on the shelf and rest.
-

a tough time to rest. FedEx Cup about to start, Ryder Cup looming.. but you're probably right.
the question is, what does Watson do with Tiger and the cup?
-
He's just prolonging the inevitable. Watson already said he'll take Tiger if he's playing well and healthy. He's not.
I've dealt with back issues since an incident in the Navy in 1996. Once it's tweaked, there's no healing without rest.
-

Tiger's back fails him again. Guy needs to take several months off and heal up.

He's not playing in neither the Ryder Cup nor the FedEx Cup.
-
Agreed. Even if he lobbies for Ryder, that phone ain't ringing.
Gonna win 'em all!
-
Phil is 44 and arthritic and posted -6 going into the weekend.
-
Put me in the "never gonna win another major camp"
He just looks so lost.
-
Should use Shaq's icy hot pad.

some of those guys swing really hard, its possible :dunno:
-
Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson says he'll make Tiger a captain's pick if Tiger tells him he's healthy and playing well. I suspect Tiger will say just that. Trouble is, Tiger didn't qualify for the FedX and it's unlikely he'll cross the pond to test his game on the Euro Tour in the next few weeks. So how will Tom know if Tiger is playing well?
-
Tiger tells Watson not to pick him. Just gained a bit more respect for TW.

None of them swing like Tiger does, either.

He should probably retire while he has some semblance of dignity.
-
Pretty harsh, he had 3 very good rounds
-
A better version of Tiger. I'm still not sure if he ever wins another major.
-
He blows. :frown: Sucks, but Spieth is our best shot to take over Jack.
-
Spieth won't do it either. Too many good players now. Thanks to Tiger.

yeah, the new generation of gold is exciting.

I agree. DJamer is my guy for obvious reasons. :D

Jason Day

Leaning toward Jordan, the guy has so much talent and so much guts.
That said, an invigorated Tiger would make the deal so much more interesting.

Oh crap better tiger proof Augusta!

I think a better title for this thread is “his back” with a :cyclist: emoticon

The holes he dropped, he made really good shots too. He's a couple insane roll outs from being 3 shots off the lead.
Moving day will be fun, and then maybe some crap weather in the forecast for Sunday, could make things interesting.

Well that was a good way to waste part of a Sunday morning/early afternoon. It was fun seeing Tiger on top of the leader board of a major!!
Molinari was absolute money today and has been on quite a roll over the last couple of months. Spieth, what the hell man, his putting was complete garbage.
-
Wore my Spieth shirt today and I’m upset how he finished. :frown: Tiger up one and then double bogeyed. Made me sick.

I changed into a red shirt after the bunker shot on 10, I feel responsible for what happened after.
Did you all notice how many tiger shots nbc put in their Ryder Cup promo? Two years ago I was certain he was going to captain this team instead of being one of its best players.
-

It's been the opposite of fast, but i'm happy he's here. Golf needs him.

i mean recent comeback in the last year or so, he seemed rock bottom and done after that infamous mugshot.

Yeah, totally in those regards.

I think he'll make the Ryder Cup, fwiw, because it's hand picked. But that doesn't mean he's any more qualified than Beau Hossler or anyone else with more top 10 wins, more cuts made, and more money earned.
Saying he would be one of the best players on the team is lol delusional. He's not in the convo.

Hossler has more money, more top 10's, more FedEx ("tour") points. Every one of those metrics provides an expnasive list of better american golfers than Woods. Are you arguing against yourself?!?!?
I just picked an obscure golfer to drive my point home.
-
I think if you look at that top 40, it proves driving "accuracy" is pointless in terms of overall success.
Are you joking???????
-
Look at the top 40, dumbass. Driving isn't the whole game. Do you play?
-
Insaid if he wants to be one of the best player he'll have to improve driver accuracy. Its Its clearly the weakest part of his game right now, so I have no idea how that is even a remotely objectionable comment?

So the bombers on your list are missing fairways but not by much with the strategy that a wedge from the rough is better than a 7 iron from the fairway. Tigers problem is he tends to have big misses off the tee that lead to doubles. I agree with FSD on this one and would add that the best stick in Tigers bag in his heyday was his putter, if and when that comes back he will win.

Yeah, it's not like I said he sucks bc he cant driver. I said it would help improve his game. His driver is crap and it's keeping him from scoring at a ryder cup level.

it's unfortunate that the goEMAW user demographic has gotten to an age where they believe that it's acceptable to talk about golf.
-
Why did he look like he wanted to quit today? He looked like he was sad. I wasn’t old enough to see him play in his prime, is this like one of his things like wearing a red shirt?
-
Tiger's body language/attitude is directly correlated to how his performance compares to his expectations. He performed poorly today, and hence his body language was poor. We just didn't notice it in his prime because he kicked ass 24/7/365. Even in his prime, though, he used to ruffle some feathers because the mics would pick up him swearing after a missed shot. Golf was even more genteel, then.

Well said
-
It's for those reasons why I love watching it tho. I keep going out there and keep making a fool of myself and watching these studs makes me hungry for more. They're so damn good. Also, I love Tiger, but he's been pretty non-existent for the last 10 years. Spieth, Rory, Fowler, DJamer, JT, Finau, dechambeau, etc. have still made the sport fun to watch. I was really hoping Spieth would run with it after his play two years ago, but this is a competitive field. Tiger imprinted this eras studs.

He was probably still one of the best golfers (probably the best) in the world until the end of 2013. Not winning a major after 2009, and how bad everything was for him from 14-17 kind of makes it hard to see, though.
He's been pretty good this year. Remember, he has had a new swing for less than a year, so if he can stay healthy, I could see him winning some tourneys in the future.
-
The major appeal of Tiger pre 2009 was his chase to break Jack's majors record. It's been hard for a lot of Tiger fans who grew up with him, because everyone believes he was the best and he'll never get there. That's all i'm saying. Age is against him now.
-
I seriously dngaf if a bunch of ADD dorkstores who only like tiger choose not to watch pga golf. They're in the same camp as the idiots who complain about baseball being too slow.
Golf is fabulous and there's dozen of young, charismatic stars to follow. There's old guys too, like Tiger, Phil and Kuch, if that's what you're in to.

Yeah, he's getting close to the pin. Really should have knocked in a few of those good opportunities on the back 9. If he keeps it up (and Brooks continues to slide back a bit), it will be a Sunday Funday.

I don’t know how to quantify why golf is more fun with tiger for me and it kind of bothers me.
I have no numbers, no intelligent words, no studies to back this... but in my mind Tiger has went from everything, to nothing and widely hated, to now an over-aged (compared to his sports stars) underdog that almost all of America is pulling for.
It's weird, and probably not true at all (because I know of a lot of haters)... but this sport and most of all, this country, needs Tiger Woods right now.
Well.... I, I NEED THE CAT... I don't really think the sport does

TIGER MOTHERFUCKING WOODS
-
We did it guys!
-
Woods couldn't chip because of the pain he felt running down his leg when he bent over, causing his hands to shake. The cortisone shots and the epidurals didn't give him relief. He couldn't play pickup golf with his friends, and he couldn't even play backyard ball with his kids.
"Coming back and playing golf was never in my thoughts," Woods would tell ESPN in March. "It was just, 'How do I get away from this pain? How can I live life again?' That was driving my life. I felt like I couldn't participate in my own life."
greatest victory in the history of golf?

So the bombers on your list are missing fairways but not by much with the strategy that a wedge from the rough is better than a 7 iron from the fairway. Tigers problem is he tends to have big misses off the tee that lead to doubles. I agree with FSD on this one and would add that the best stick in Tigers bag in his heyday was his putter, if and when that comes back he will win.

In the 13 seasons that Tigers accuracy off the tee has been 60% or better he has won 68 tournaments.
In the 7 season he didn’t drive it that accurately he won 12 times including today.
It should be noted that stunted calls people dumbasses that are not dumbasses.

You guys aren't following the Ryder Cup, are you?

Here's the genesis of wackytard's fixation on Sugar Dick and when Sugar Dick allegedly claimed Tiger "sucks"
I changed into a red shirt after the bunker shot on 10, I feel responsible for what happened after.
Did you all notice how many tiger shots nbc put in their Ryder Cup promo? Two years ago I was certain he was going to captain this team instead of being one of its best players.
Let's pump the brakes on "one of the best players on the ryder cup team". Okay, thx
The day of reckoning has arrived, and I won, again.
-
Then there was this
He's going to have to learn how to hit his driver to do that.
It was a links course this last weekend. Nobody was using their driver.
The PGA has a fabulous database that includes rankings on driver accuracy and stuff
Look at this list of nobody's. http://www.espn.com/golf/statistics/_/year/2018/sort/driveAccuracyPct/type/expanded You're such a rough ridin' clown!

I am IRL sad about this.
I was at first.
But these days, I am a much bigger fan of Tiger as a human and a father, than I am of him as a golfer. And I’m a huge fan of him as a golfer.
I’ve calmed since hearing it’s not life threatening.

I agree, and that's what makes me sad. I don't care about him breaking Jack's record of major championships. I do care about the fact that it seems apparent he is struggling with some personal issues, although I guess I shouldn't jump to conclusions too quickly.
-
Yeah, man. Speculation can take this to some bad places.

He's had problems with pain meds before. Easy to jump to that conclusion, given his recent surgery.
Hope he recovers ok, and gets help if he needs it. Glad nobody else was hurt.

As someone who has had a surgery decently recently, and was given real pain meds for the first time, I can tell you holy crap, no way can I trust myself on that stuff, knocks you on your ass.
I am glad he seems to be alright, and hope it's nothing more (or not even meds related)

I bet he'll be like Faldo and hit the booth or coach or something. He doesn't seem like the type who can go from being the GOAT to hanging out on the Seniors tour.
-
I could see him still playing in the 4 majors as long as he can, and just laying low outside of that, doing his golf course design work, and being with his kids, etc.
Maybe I've read it wrong but sounds like about a year before he can even start working to get in golf shape again? If all goes perfect over the next few weeks.
Could be good for his back...

5 back surgeries and now this. He's 45. I know he's chasing greatness, but he should really start thinking about his livelihood moving forward. And nobody wants to see him catch that racist prick more than me when it comes to greatest golfer of all time.

Agreed. He can come back from this. Obviously, like always, he'll have the best medical care and rehab, and as alluded to earlier, maybe this will help the back heal.
I can definitely see him playing the majors when he is healthy and doing some damage. That would be truly awesome.
But he has a long road ahead of him.

didn't know that about jack, but if it's his support of trump i'm not sure tiger is much better. it's golf though, what can you expect. history of privilege but it's also an awesome game. :dunno:

My guess is that there are a lot of people at Nike, etc. who are very happy that they did not draw blood.

I take it that after going off the road the front end of the car hit something with enough force to crush his legs and pin him inside. Ouch.

How many of those other kids ahead of them have the GOAT golfer as their dad? All Charlie has to do is say "Dad, I want to play golf for a living." and he will be very rough ridin' good at it for a very long time. I don't think people are putting WAY too much stock in him. He literally kicked ass on national TV, knowing millions were watching. It's a just for fun bet, who cares. Don't feel bad. He is better at a game at 12 than any of us are right now and would kill to be great at.

I think Charlie has probably had enough crap happen in his life (non golf related) to effect him negatively, unfortunately. And much like his father, golf might be his way to deal with it. But as long as he gets the choice to play or not, if he does, I would bet on him.
-
i remember tw saying he wasn't going to force his kids into golf, so i think charlie taking it seriously is recent. his swing is incredible and doesn't match his scores.

I saw a bunch of people making this point on Twitter and it cracked me TF up. Not sure if was because that was their "proof" he isn't that good, or just that this crap is tracked for 9-12 year old kids.
It does appear he has won 1 of the 9 or so "tournaments" he's played in the last few years, which falls way short of the 22% winning percentage his dad has.

For me, it was all of the above. Like, relax on the fun thing that’s happening with father and son on the golf course right now. A lot changes in the game, especially with his age, tee box adjustments, mental game of the sport, etc. I would guess naming the next PGA player this early on would be hard to compare to other sports. So much growth and mental games go on from the age of 12-21. If he wants it, I’ll be his #1 fan. That’s all I’m selling here.

People are saying that because Tiger himself said the state of his recovery is such that the golf shots don't hurt but walking long distances does (paraphrasing). Seems weird that that would be the case, but apparently it is. Also, Augusta National is very hilly, so that makes the walking more taxing. If you ask this Tigerhead, the PGA should allow him to use a cart (not gonna happen).

Yes, they definitely talk a lot about how it's harder than walking on a flat surface, and that adds to my lol.

My quick math says the course itself is 4.3 miles long. I could see how it could be a problem doing that for 2-4 straight days, considering he almost had to have his right leg amputated a little over a year ago. A golf swing, especially at an elite level, does put stress on various parts of the body, but not so much on the lower legs.
-
PTI today was pretty tiger-specific with respect to how grueling walking is. I can't remember the other shows (maybe podcasts?) last week where they were talking about how hard walking is for everyone.
Good luck to all of these folks in their 4 4-mile walks (with elevation!) with about 72 breaks each day.

This whole thing is clearly trim trimming but for the record
Woods’ injuries included comminuted open fractures to both his tibia and fibula bones in his right leg. Those required immediate surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center before he was subsequently transferred to Cedars Sinai and, finally, back to South Florida in mid-March to continue his rehab from home. Still unclear is whether additional procedures will be necessary, or if Woods can expect to regain full mobility and strength in his leg.
Though surgeons managed to save his right leg after considering amputation, his injuries — including compound fractures that pierced the skin — suggested he would be lucky to walk again, let alone play golf.
Woods’ injury list reads like a medical encyclopedia: five back surgeries, ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments, torn Achilles’ tendons, surgeries to remove benign growths from his troublesome left knee.
I once had to quit a round with sciatica and I had a cart. I couldn't imagine doing this. I don't think he has a chance in hell of making it though two rounds and if he manages to do that, something he had trouble doing before 2019, no shot at making the cut. I'll enjoy watching until he inevitably WDs though.

Found it, the 3/29 PTI. It was today’s PTI that reminded me of it.
It’s unbelievable the hills and how difficult it is to walk augusta national.
I’m aware tiger will have a harder time than other golfers with walking. Wilbon made it sound like completing the masters is tougher than TJ’s Final.

Tiger is half metal at this point in his life. Between his back and legs, etc. The tork and force he uses to hit the ball the way he does, takes a toll. He's also 46. If he makes it to the weekend, that's 72 holes over the course of 4 days. He's going against a whole new generation of young studs as well, but go off, king!

Why is this the hill (p intended) you want to die on? People are talking about it because the GOAT almost lost his right leg a year ago. It isn't problematic for other folks. This schtick of yours is dumb.
I think that golf people observe that regular people paying attention this week because tiger’s back and are using his unique situation to attempt to talk up their sport as physically challenging, and it’s funny.

A course that, it looks pristine, but also apparently is a massive challenge for anybody to walk in.

For him, challenging for him. Weird that you seem to be missing that whole part of the conversation.

No. You keep saying that while I'm telling you and showing you that they're talking about it being challenging for everyone. Like right here in my most recent words you quoted and that I provided the audio of. I should've put the corresponding emphasis in my original quote.

Same for the 3/29 PTI I referenced earlier. https://www.espn.com/radio/play/_/id/33625229/_/s/espn
I'm aware that the subject is coming up at all this year because of tiger and his legs.
Anyway, it's funny, for the original reasons and now the defensiveness.
I'll check back here later to see if anyone quit or died in today's grueling walk/golf.
-
the masters (and only the masters) should allow participants to use a vehicle of transport around the course- but not a golf cart. it would have to be something equally challenging and dangerous as walking. like they could ride a camel, or a segway blindfolded), or a regular bicycle but with one flat tire, roller skates on grass, backwards piggyback on sibling, etc. the caddy doesn’t get to help him in any way.
the golfers would have to pick walking or their mode of transport before round 1, if they quit the mode of transport, they must drop from the tournament.
-
Hoverboard, but with strategy as to how often and when it can be recharged, like fuel pit stops in car races.
Is it against the rules currently to lay down and roll downhill via gravity, cutting the walk distance up to 50%?
-
He’s the entire game of golf. Nobody ever has or ever will come close. He’s single handedly carrying the game.

Players quit all the time because they aren't physically able to complete their round, it happens virtually every week. Casey Martin and John Daly both had very famous cases about using golf carts because they couldn't walk the course.

Yes, I remember, and those were other good examples of golf people's stances that walking and the physicality of doing so are big elements of the sport. Similarly amusing.

Great round by Tiger. I was wrong, let's see how he recovers tonight.
First time watching Scottie Scheffler and I can't stand watching that dude, slower than crap.

I think they should be allowed to use whatever form of transportation that they choose, but that they should not be able to get off of or out of their transportation to hit the ball. So if you are on horseback, you're bringing your polo clubs.

He’s being smart about it on Par 5’s. He use to go for it on the second shot, but he’s playing safe now and approaching it differently due to his leg. I don’t think non golfers know how much legs you use when hitting. It’s half the game. Hence the stamina of walking too, after having your main leg crushed.
-
I had a masters streaming tab open at work just because of Tiger. The last time I sat down and watched more than 1 hr of golf was when he won the masters a couple of years back.
As SD said, Tiger is golf and has been for the last 20 years.

OK even i think that one is a bit ridiculous. Assuming her fellow Swedes back home would mock her for that one

over half the golfers in the field have frostbite

It’s going to be in the 60’s today in Augusta. It’s going to be in the upper 50’s tomorrow and back in the 70’s on Sunday.
All that said. I think playing golf at that level for 4 walking rounds is a physical challenge.
The mental component wears on the physical component as well IMO

If there were women and hooking up, it really would be The Challenge.

Just attention whoring and I'm sad it worked. That dumb article keeps popping up on my Twitter feed and my news feed, I successful avoided opening it until I saw it here, instant regret, it was what I thought it would be. Well done pedo dave and fox business, got me to eventually click.

What derp ever thought Tiger Woods was a "goody two shoes"?
Unfortunately Portnoy is kind of a somebody, and that article was a waste of server space.

Joe Dirt really melting down on the back nine, sad

Rory putting together a 64 was a ton of fun.

Watched Sunday via ESPN +. It was cool following groups thru the course holes 1-18 vs bouncing around. More downtime, but a different perspective of the course I had never seen.

Between his Patriots takes, attacking Mahomes family, whining about the Masters, etc. He's a dbag!

His whole schtick is being a Masshole and it's made him millions. Can't fault him for sticking to his guns.

He's never made a dime from me. And I find your statement curious. Trump has made millions from appealing to the lowest of the low. Can't fault him?

Couldn't find a U.S. Open thread, so I assume this is the general PGA thread.
