SEC.....Over-Rated? (Again)
« on: September 06, 2016, 10:19:07 AM »
So, SEC goes 7-7 opening weekend with only one of those games being a league game. Granted, there were several marquee games in the bunch.  But still, the self-appointed Premier League in CFB should do better than that. Having a big fat ESPN contract is nice and all....but at some point you have to win some games agains quality opponents outside the conference. Am I the only one who suspects that ESPN is over-inflating the strength of SEC football so that they can put more fat asses in front of flat screens and sell more beer?
A related aside, IMO. There is some historical parallel with the supposed strength of Big East basketball over several decades after ESPN's PR machine made them into some mythical super power. There were some good teams and good players for sure...but much less so when matched against quality opponents outside their league.
SEC....SEC

In order for the ESPN/SEC narrative to work, they need to have a good portion of the conference be over-rated and highly ranked in the pre-season rankings so that the legitimate powers like Alabama can bolster their rankings by beating "ranked" teams.

My stance has pretty much always been that they are the best,  but not by as much as they get credit for.  And the reason they get so much credit is because they win a lot of NCs,  even if the bottom 1/2 or 2/3 is between marginal and average.

They're reputation will decrease if other conferences win more NCs (and granted,  it has to a degree over the last several years).
I once blew clove smoke in a guy's face that cut in front of me in the line to KJ's.

Saban has caused so many good sec coaches to lose their jobs. I get that those programs want to win the conference for once, but nobody they bring in as a replacement is gonna beat Saban either.

Either he isn't counting the Cotton before it was in the New Year's Six, or he can't count. Sumlin & Manziel won the cotton with aggy.

Based on the wording he is only counting the Big 4 and only the NY6 era for the Peach and Cotton.
