@mocat I guess you're still winning by not flying out of NRT. What's the travel time? NRT is 90 minutes and $20 from anywhere you want to be, if that helps.

I'd rather spend time in a place rather than spending most of in a plane.

i'm with you.  the idea of around the worlding sounds neat, but really i'd just like to go to a place and stay there for a year or so.

i hate the actually being inside a plane part of travel for anything over like six hours.  i don't think this is for me, or would need to maximize connections

The positive thing here tho is that I get bored af of pretty much any place after 2 days, so just doing 2 days in a bunch of spots is p cool

What about the added challenge of doing six continents? You know, while you're at it!

I think I'd need 2 different trips to hit every continent. One northern hemisphere and one southern.

It would be cool to do all 7 continents as a thing to accomplish, but I think doing 6 is a more reasonable goal.

I currently only have Asia and Australia to go, which seems very doable.

Skip Japan, too. Leaving the US is just asking for trouble.

this is actually a good story though. no negative consequences. far more interesting than just a normal experience of living and teaching here i'm sure.

its true that they can hold you that long without telling anybody and even without filing charges.

lots of stores in shopping centers are packed closely with no obvious borders, so I have actually been stopped inadvertently walking out of shops without paying, but they have always been really gracious about it guiding me back to pay. probably my MALE PRIVILEGEtm keeps me out of jail?
