The Christie speech was very good at its purpose. It is unique to chant "lock her up!" but is it that much further than the RNC delegates wearing "purple heart" band-aides in 2004 to mock Kerry?

you are right. I have thought the crowd was very reserved. I think W. was so incredibly popular among Republicans it is hard to compare, but I think that Romney/Ryan got a lot more love than this. Palin was a rockstar at the RNC in 2008.
