Many of our newly acquired studs do not have ESPN rating until a few days after they commit. With the comes a little scouting report. Here's the ESPN scouting reports for our current commits. While ESPN ratings have traditionally been
, I do enjoy the scouting reports and read them with a grain of salt.
Alex Delton:
OVERALL TRAITS
Size-Strength-Mobility
Possesses just average height on a sturdy, well-built frame. Shows some bulk and strength as a passer and runner. Has a compact build due to his average height. Is a very good overall athlete with good speed for the position and excellent foot quickness. Is a dual-threat capable of being a designated runner or an improviser when things break down, but is clearly a passer first. Should be considered a runner, not the runner.
Mental-Makeup
Has a playmaker's mentality and will surprise you with his natural abilities as a passer. Is a bit of a sandlot feel to him, but he's efficient in his methods. Is definitely poised and plays with confidence. Can operate well from under center or from the shotgun. He is very confident in where to go with the football based off of pre-snap reads. Is still progressing when required to work to his second or third option. Is most in command when moving the launch point and throwing on the perimeter.
Has a swagger. Accuracy
Has a tendency to throw off his back foot or without his feet being set. Can also get into rhythm and be very impressive with his arm. Isn't always sound with his footwork, but has some sandlot traits that compensate. Transfers his weight well and aligns nicely with the target. As with most improvisers, accuracy can waver based on feet. Throws a catchable ball with zip and is very accurate on the move throwing low and away when necessary. Flashes the ability to throw guys open with good anticipation.
Release/Arm Strength
Possesses a consistent, over-the-top, but compact delivery. Can sling the ball just a little bit. His methods are not always consistent, but the end result generally is. Can drop the ball off quickly and beat the rush with release. Arm strength shows RPMs, but not elite power. Can make most college level throws if feet are set. Loses a bit of power on deeper vertical throws. He's really good when dinking and dunking and will surprise you with some zip on intermediate throws into tight spots especially when on the move.
Bottom Line
Delton is not a player that will consistently wow you with his physical traits, but will surprise you at times with his ability to run and throw with the occasional spectacular play. Is a constant factor with his feet to break contain and keep plays alive which makes him dangerous on the perimeter. Makes a lot of plays for this offense and is a great fit for the spread offense that wants the quarterback to be a part of the running game. Should receive a lot of mid-major attention and may see some from bottom to middle tier programs from the big five conferences.
Junior Eval
STRENGTHS: An athletically gifted young player who has great footspeed for a college prospect. He has shown to have no problem hitting the open receiver, with a clear understanding of leading the receiver to the ball and hitting him on the correct shoulder. He has no problem getting the ball downfield when he's on the run. ... AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: He must do a better job of using his legs to step into the throw, as right now he is pretty much all arm. A little mechanical work on his upper body is necessary too, especially so that he can shorten up his release and not have as much of a windup leading into the throw. ... BOTTOM LINE: Delton has a lot of natural gifts that will make him a highly-touted recruit, but he needs to put in a little more mechanical work in order to maximize his potential as a college quarterback. He doesn't have a problem with accuracy whatsoever, but it certainly wouldn't hurt him to make the mentioned adjustments and help his timing.
